Prince Andreas of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Duke of Saxony, passed away in Coburg on April 3, 2025, at the age of 82. The funeral was held on April 24, 2025, at the Stadtkirche St. Moriz in Coburg. King Carl Gustaf, Queen Silvia, Princess Christina, Princess Madeleine, and Christopher O'Neill attended the service. Prince Andreas was a first cousin of King Carl Gustaf and also the godfather of Princess Madeleine of Sweden.
Prince Andreas, Head of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, managed the family estates, including farms, forests, and properties. He was the owner of Greinburg Castle in Austria and Callenberg Castle in Coburg. Andreas married Carin Dabelstein — daughter of Adolf Wilhelm Martin Dabelstein — in a civil ceremony in Hamburg on June 18, 1971, and in a religious ceremony on July 31, 1971. The couple had three children.
Princess Madeleine was christened by Archbishop Olof Sundby in the Royal Chapel at the Royal Palace on 31 August 1982. Her godparents were Princess Benedikte of Denmark, Prince Andreas of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Princess Christina, and Mr. Walter Sommerlath.
Nice to see a well dressed group.
ReplyDeleteJust FYI for anyone else wondering about the cane like me; I noticed in the pics that the queen is using a cane. Apparently she had bunion surgery on or around April 4th.
ReplyDeleteIt always seems a little rude and disrespectful to comment on fashion for a funeral/memorial service in my opinion (also, 99% of everyone is wearing black so not much to compare and contrast). But, I have to say everyone one looks really nice and appropriate - no too short hemlines, odd hats, or inappropriate pops of color, etc.
I also didn't understand the family connection but I see from the last pic that he was one of Madeleine's Godparents.
He was also the King’s first cousin. The King’s mother and HRH P Andreas’ father were siblings.
DeleteI fully agree about comments regarding funerals and memorials. They are not times to critique the fashion of those in attendance. The important thing is that they are attending and paying their respects to the deceased and their family.
DeleteThe photo of Madeleine's baptism is beautiful. I'm happy it was shared.
Agree about the lovely idea with the old photo. Little Victoria with flowers in her hair - so cute!
DeleteThanks for the information. It's good to know the Queen hasn't had any serious problems with her leg.
DeleteI agree about fashion and funerals.
ReplyDeleteBut please allow me to comment on the picture of Madeleine's baptism, in general we comment about princess Benedict and her impeccable sartorial choices, well I'm not sure she will get that many compliments about her Ă la Chales Chaplin hat and her dress...
Knowing her, Im sure that back in the day she looked terrific! We just don't not see that today đ
