At the invitation of King Willem-Alexander, Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said of Oman is making a state visit to the Netherlands on Tuesday, April 15 and Wednesday, April 16. This year marks the 400th anniversary of maritime relations between the two countries. On April 15, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima officially welcomed Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said at Dam Square in Amsterdam.
In the evening, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima will host a state banquet at the Royal Palace in Amsterdam, which will also be attended by Princess Catharina-Amalia. At the welcome ceremony, Queen Máxima wore a Christian Dior jacket that she had previously worn at the wedding of Prince Friso and Mabel in 2004.

ReplyDeleteShe is truly a hat lady, but we always knew it. The outfit itself is very elegant and at the same time very pretty in a sweet way. Short collarless jackets with rounded contours have alwaysbeen my favourite, that little vest or blouse under it is adorable. Lovely earrings, lovely hair, overall perfection.

DeleteHmm ‘interesting’ hat - I’m not a fan. However I can no longer fit into anything I wore in 2004 so I am mighty impressed with the jacket! It fits beautifully and is a classic look.

ReplyDeleteTotally agree. Btway this is a jacket from 2004 that she wore at the marriage of her brother in law Prince Friso who died some 10 years agi in an avalanche while skying in Lech in Austria
DeleteThat they hold their garment when they are moving is understandable (even if it would be less bothersome if they made them a bit shorter). Less so the reason for holding it when standing still - but it is a very inspiring question :-)
DeleteIt is called dishdasha and it is Oman's national dress. Omani men hold up the skirt of their dishdasha to show respect, according to a traditional custom.
DeleteIt's rare to see Máxima wearing black and white. The Dior jacket and skirt are very elegant and well-fitting. I just don't like the appliqués (mother of pearl?). They're unnecessary. The hat and earrings are perfect. Máxima looks elegant. A beautiful outfit. I just think it's missing a necklace. A simple pearl necklace would elevate the look even more.

I wonder why Maxima is wearing an outfit with such a low neckline. The Dutch couple is receiving the Head of State of Oman, an Arab country. Shouldn’t you take the culture of your guests into account while dressing up. It is called thinking about others.

DeleteThe other way round, dear @Anon: those who come as guests into your country (in this case Holland) should respect the culture and customs of the host country. This, too, is thinking about others.
DeleteThis question comes up (and in reverse) every time westerners meet arabs on a visit to their country or they to ours. Why on earth should we kowtow to the arabs? If you think she is showing too much do you also think she should cover her legs and hair?

DeleteI’m sure she and her team “thought about the others” in selecting her outfit. However, having travelled a lot (70 countries, mostly for work) I would say that when I travel to someone else’s culture I do my absolute best to wear what is respectful in that other place, but likewise I expect my visitors to dress with respect to me/ us in our country. So if our country is more liberal then I expect them to respect that, and possibly go a step towards joining in, as I do in foreign lands. So, no I don’t think the neckline is wrong.
DeleteEveryone should dress how they usually do, unless they care to dress in the local attire. It should never be mandatory. The only reason I can think of to change what one would typically wear is if they are in a religious environment. I very firmly believe in respecting other religions, even if they are not my beliefs.
