Upon arrival, they were received by the Apostolic Nuncio of the Holy See in Spain, Bernardito Auza.

Subsequently, the King and Queen, along with Queen Sofía, signed the book of condolences opened in memory of the Pontiff, expressing their deep sorrow and recognition of his spiritual legacy. Pope Francis's last public appearance was at St. Peter's Square in Vatican City on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025, where he gave his final Easter address. He passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88.
