Belgian Royal Family Attends Maundy Thursday Mass at Santiago Cathedral

King Philippe, Queen Mathilde, Prince Gabriel, Princess Eléonore, and Prince Emmanuel

On April 16, 2025, King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium, along with their three children — Prince Gabriel, Princess Eléonore, and Prince Emmanuel — arrived in Santiago de Compostela, completing their pilgrimage in Spain. The family began this tradition in 2017 and has walked a section of the route each year during Holy Week.

On April 17, the day after completing their pilgrimage to Compostela, King Philippe, Queen Mathilde, Prince Gabriel, Princess Eléonore, and Prince Emmanuel attended the Maundy Thursday Mass of the Lord’s Supper at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Maundy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ, during which he instituted the sacrament of Holy Communion before his arrest and crucifixion.

From what I can see of Mathilde’s pants, they look well-fitting and elegant. — Jane

What a beautiful coat on Q Mathilde! That color really flatters her, perfect with gray pants and top.

Love this about this family they are not to uppity to help one another, rather than using staff.

I love the colors on Queen Mathilde. Gray and fuchsia go well together. The weather looks rather cold and rainy. I think King Philippe is wearing a kind of fleece under his coat instead of a jacket. Princess Eléonore is wearing an off-white coat in which I saw her during last winter. Prince Gabriel is not with them, he probably had other occupations and went back to Brussels already.

Too much ostentation. It should be private. Religion is not trivialised. Irene

Anyone should be free to have no religion, or have one and practice it openly without hiding. They don't impose anything one anyone, and them having pictures while going to a mass should not be of any harm to you. If you feel unseasy with innocent pictures of a Catholic royal family doing what they should do, please don't even read nor comment articles about them.

I have been interrupted and start again. @ Irene

In Santiago de Compostella you are not alone. If another king of another country was there, he would be photographed too. If kings, queens, princes and princesses of another religion are going to church, to the temple or to another building, they are photographed too. With the social media the pictures of kings and queens can be seen everywhere. Kings and queens from other countries are showing their beliefs too, why not. I do not think that anybody who did the camino and come to the final point in the cathedral do it to trivialise their religion on the contrary. Religion is not private unless you are not able to show it in public. As long as you have the possibility to gather with other believers your religion is considered as a feast for the community. If you cannot go to a place with other people of the same belief there is no need anymore for churches, synagoges, temples, etc...If you must hide yourself to pray and cannot go with the other believers, you are going back to an ancient world where people were killed for what they believed.

I’m a bit confused by Irene’s comment including mention of killing?! when all we’re seeing here is a family who just finished a solid walk together in simple clothes, then spent a night at a gorgeous 5 star hotel, and then accessed the luggage sent ahead to dress up elegantly to go to church. For me this speaks of family closeness, a very nice opportunity for a royal family to do an adventure fairly much off the radar from the cameras, and then to be formally seen. All very nice and Mathilde’s pink is wonderful against the grey/black weather!

      I agree with anonymous 12:39
That is just what Irene cannot stand that they are formally seen when going to church. According to her they should hide themselves to pray in private ?!

      I agree
King Charles and Queen Camilla went to Royal Maundy Service at Durham Cathedral.
Queen Sofia visited Sevilla to attend the Madruga celebrations and went to the Basilica de la Macarena.
The King of Thailand and his wife visited the Mawlid celebration a significant annual event for Thai muslims.
All these kings and queens are going, according to their beliefs, to celebrations which take place just before Easter.
So why is this any different ? I know why. Because there are people on this blog who take every opportunity to criticize King Philippe and Queen Mathilde and in this case also their children. I think a lot of people are just jealous of this wonderful family.
