King Frederik and Queen Mary are on a two-day state visit to Finland at the invitation of President Alexander Stubb. They hosted a return reception at Finlandia Hall in Helsinki, attended by Finland's President Alexander Stubb and his wife, Suzanne Innes-Stubb. King Frederik delivered a short welcome speech, and the event featured musical performances by the Copenhagen Boys' Choir and the Finnish boys' choir Cantores Minores.
At the reception, Denmark’s ambassador to Finland, Jakob Nymann-Lindegren, and the accompanying ministers were also present. Finlandia Hall is an iconic building designed by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto.
Andiata Traci Suit
Beaucoup trop maquillée
ReplyDeleteI think Mary’s makeup is heavy, yes, but that it’s lovely for a formal evening where there’ll be plenty of photographers and she’s the star of the show and under a lot of observation. During these last few days I’ve become very impressed by the fashion choices of the President’s wife - she dresses beautifully.
DeleteOui, je pense aussi. En regardant ces photos on se dit que c'est trop de maquillage autour des yeux.
DeleteI agree..the heavy makeup really detracts from the overall look. Maybe it stands out even more because the pantsuit is white? (V.M.)
DeleteOui, dans le premier photo, je l'ai observé immediatement aussi. Mais pour une soirée, c'est pas grave.
Delete- Anon 9:13
The white suit needs some extra make up for this evening occasion. I like it very much.
DeleteI like this pantsuit a lot, the styling is fantastic. The skintone in her face seems too yellow today, as it is during this whole trip. Normally it's more natural, more pink tones. Maybe someone else than usual is doing her make-up. I do like the rest of her make-up for this occasion.
DeleteDamsel Dragonfly
I agree with anon 08:26
DeleteInteresting that the queen wore pants vs a dress
ReplyDeleteInteresting or disappointing? Pants during the day, and pants for a formal evening occasion as well. While she looks splendid, even with the evening make-up, and she attempts to snazz up the look with metallic shoes and clutch, the suit has a day-time vibe to it, maybe because of the vest where a sparkly contrasting-color top would have worked better IMO.
DeleteThe First Lady is dressed beautifully, although I feel an elegant up-do would have elevated the overall look. S.M.
The Finnish pair are the better dressed.
ReplyDeleteToo heavy eye make up on Queen Mary !!
ReplyDeleteYes, agree. I thought so to.
DeleteThe president's wife looks magnificent, very elegant and tasteful dress. Mary's suit is beautiful, but all I see is the obscene amount of make-up.
ReplyDelete100% Agreed.
DeleteMESH
I don't think it's "obscene" at all. It's an evening event and she has naturally dark colours herself. She looks smashing as does Mrs Innes-Stubb as well.
Delete-B.
Mary looks great in white but her makeup is too heavy and garish.
ReplyDeleteBoth ladies look good. Mrs. Finnland's dress is an example for how important light is, without proper light it is a bit dull, always a problem with photos. I love trouser suits with a vest worn as a top under the jacket, we saw Letizia wear one (not the first time) the other day. It makes a simple and very elegant, clean neckline with the jacket. Mary has strong makeup, needed probably because of the colour of her trouser suit.
ReplyDeleteWay too heavy eye makeup.
ReplyDeleteThis was reportedly an evening event. Evening makeup is heavier. Her makeup is perfect for the time of day.
DeleteThe Finnish First Lady is not plastered with too much make up…evening event or not. Why do Mary fans take any criticism of her outfits or make up as a personal attack on her?
Delete@Anon 14:15 I am not a "Mary fan", and there is nothing personal in my opinion about Mary at this event. I think Mary's evening makeup is appropriate and her hair looks great. I don't love what she is wearing. She could have made it more formal by wearing sequined top instead of the vest, for example, and I really dislike the style of her shoes. I also think the suit is too baggy. A pair of pleated trousers and a double-breasted jacket worn open is too much volume on top and bottom. I would have liked it better if one piece was more fitted.
DeleteThe Finnish first lady, Suzanne, doesn't look like she is wearing anything on her face, though I am sure she is. Her makeup doesn't hold up to harsher artificial lighting. She looks washed out. Natural sunlight and artificial lighting make colors appear differently. It is commonly understood that women wear more makeup in the evening. If you only compare their faces, not looking at their clothing, it is obvious that Mary is dressed for a formal evening event, while the first lady's face could be made up for a picnic. We wear makeup the way we chose what to wear. It depends on the occasion. It is your choice if you don't want to wear more makeup in the evening or for more formal events, but it is not wrong when others do.
Suzanne Innes-Stubb dress has a suble glow, beautiful. I think this is made of silk which has this characteristic. She has an excellent taste and dresses immaculate and more playful than Mary.
ReplyDeleteHuge fan of Mary but on this visit the First Lady has outshone at most events - not on the evening gala last night. This suit, to me, has so much potential but is just too big for her.. the trousers are so baggy they don’t look like wide trousers they just look too big. Same with the jacket. Interesting that imo a couple of First Ladies who are not royal and therefore don’t have the same access to cash for clothes or more importantly jewels have outshone her. Come on Mary - we love you, we know you can do better! LRB
ReplyDeleteI think Mary chose the suit because the designer is Finnish.
Delete-B.
What a great suit. Mary looks stunning. A little much on makeup.
ReplyDeletecss
Holy cow. Mary, if you are there somewhere under your makeup, raise your hand.
ReplyDeleteHilarious comment !!
DeleteAh, the classic ‘insult someone’s appearance’ move. Got anything original, or is that the peak of your wit?
Delete00.44 and 00.45 hilarious comments!
DeleteMary's fan's don't get it.
It is a funny comment - even if I disagree that she’s wearing too much makeup. I’m a Mary fan but you can’t say “Mary’s fans don’t get it” because we are all different. On the other hand, if you say something here that could be hurtful to the person you’re writing about if she reads it, people will point it out to you. It’s fine to have different opinions, let’s just stay kind - to one another, and to the people we’re writing about. It makes this space a nice one to visit often!
DeleteI’m a fan of Mary and I think this comment is hilarious! I agree her makeup is heavy but given that it’s an evening event, it doesn’t seem excessive to me. I don’t love her suit, however. I just don’t think it fits the situation. It’s seems like it would fit in better at a board meeting.
DeleteShe needs to stay away from instagram makeup tutorials.
ReplyDeleteHahahah
DeleteNoted! I’ll be sure to consult you, the ultimate beauty guru, next time.
DeleteI agree with you all, make up too heavy, perhaps to compensate the white suit? The first lady had been marvelous dressed, but I'm the past as well, is not the first time we see here here, so elegant.
ReplyDeleteLuna
I think both ladies are dressed perfectly. Mary is the perfect hostess - elegant, but not outshining her guests, and the First Lady is the perfect guest - dressed beautifully to honour her hosts. Same goes for the men. These two couples display their social decorum very well.
ReplyDelete- Anon 9:13
Previously on this event some were complaining Queen Mary was not wearing enough make up but now she has too much. I guess you cannot please everyone! She does look beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI do agree with you,@ Fitzhugh.
DeleteI bet that none of those / the person always complaining about makeup has never worn any herself nor is she capable of drawing a simple line on her face.
It goes back to the same thing--a certain ignorance about makeup or fashion. Most people don't attend these kinds of functions, so they have probably never been exposed to this type of makeup. Instead of becoming educated on the subject, they criticize.
DeleteMary should stop making her own make-up!
ReplyDeleteGuess Mary’s ”makeup line” really isn’t your foundation for success, huh?
DeleteM is tired an try to hide it with lots of make-up, not good!
ReplyDeleteYou must be her confidant, interesting!
DeleteWell, if makeup is her secret weapon, then it looks like she's just ready to conquer the world—one fabulous look at a time!
DeleteMary looks stunning.
ReplyDeleteAgree! She is wearing Finnish "Andiata". Earlier Suzanne was wearing a black skirt suit from Danish "Birret".
DeleteThese two couples really had a good time together. Always in good mood and making jokes. It's no secret that Finland and Denmark are two countries having the happiest people in the world 😉. Perfect match!
The suit is WOW and Queen Mary wears it well.
ReplyDeleteMaybe Queen Mary used a local makeup artist.
Perhaps her Danish make-up artist wasn’t included in the royal entourage.
Agree with all the positive comments for the First Lady.
Maybe Helen should expand the boundaries of this blog to be
NewMyRoyals and First Ladies. 😁
Enterely agreed, Deadeggs.
DeleteThis is clearly a professionally executed makeup, flawless and very effective.
I think this is one of the most amazing evening makeup ever worn by Queen Mary.
I love her straight hair style and the outfit and accessories are extra wow!
Her jewellery must have been carefully selected and I guess it conveys some meanings, the necklace in particular.
The First Lady is equally beautiful and elegant.
The Fininsh President must be a nice and down to earth person, someone ready to make jokes, maybe(see pic 6).
I have the impression that a lot of commentators hate QM and always find something negative on her look. I don’t understand. She seems like a nice genuine person and - in my view - always looks impeccable.
ReplyDeleteI disagree. To say "I don't like her outfit" does not mean hating her (nor anybody else).
DeleteI’m with Coralie here. To comment on an outfit does not convey anything of hate. “Hate” is a very strong word and as none of us here know her (in all likelihood!) none can hate her, and we certainly don’t. She’s a fabulously interesting person and for the most part comments on her are extremely positive … but if sometimes the comments on trouser width or mascara are “not my taste”, it has nothing to do with hate.
DeleteSo because some people don’t like Mary’s make up or outfit they hate her? Mary seems like a nice person but I don’t understand the she-can-do-wrong worship of her fans!
Delete@Anon 13:29 If only the comments said her mascara is "not to my taste." These comments are more than that. They are declaring her makeup to be too heavy, with an obvious lack of knowledge about wearing makeup at night, and there are jokes being made at her expense. There is always a polite, respectful way to express our thoughts. "Not to my taste" is not insulting and still gets the point across perfectly.
DeleteAni. 16:44:::And if someone did say that her “mascara was not to my taste” they’d also get slammed by Mary fans for hating her for that comment. And really? Saying her make up is too heavy is not insulting her or making a joke about her…that’s really stretching it! And you don’t have to ‘know’ about make up to have an opinion of what you do or don’t like about it. Just because a look is ‘in’ doesn’t mean it looks good.
DeleteI’m 8.29 and I’m not a fan. I ‘m not 15 anymore.I don’t mind other opinions, I sometimes disagree with others too, but somehow the above opinions sounded to harsh to me.
Delete@Anon 18:17 Kindly read through the comments. There is nothing wrong with not caring for something because it is not our taste. We all have our own style, and we should. There are comments that are jokes at her expense such as referring to staying away from Instagram makeup tutorials and "Holy cow. Mary, if you are there somewhere under your makeup, raise your hand," along with the responses to those remarks.
DeleteMary is wearing the finnish brand Andiata, when she is visiting Finland, she is a genius!
ReplyDelete12.21. Every queen and princess does so, when vivit a country!
DeleteI think that anon 12:21 was sarcastic: "a genius"...
DeleteElégantes toutes les deux, chacune dans son propre style ; je remarque que Mary a forcé sur le maquillage des yeux !
ReplyDeleteShe can do better
ReplyDeleteWell, she’s clearly doing better than anyone who's got time to comment on it!
DeleteCould you? It’s a hugely pressured role, and here she has chosen a Finnish designer to honour the host country, and had a very glamourous hair and makeup done for the evening, and put a huge smile on her face in front of a hundred flashing cameras. I’m not sure she can do better if she’s already doing brilliantly.
DeleteEn toute honnêteté, je ne suis guère subjuguée par les tenues de ces dames.
ReplyDeleteIl y a matière à amélioration.
-Astrid.
Sad to say I am unimpressed by her showing. Heavy makeup doesn’t compensate her uninspired choice of a daytime outfit for this occasion. She rarely is inappropriate in her outfits, but I guess everyone has missteps.
ReplyDeleteLily
Maybe her choice was just a different take on the occasion, even if it didn’t quite resonate with everyone.
DeleteThe first lady is very elegant I think on this occasion she out done Mary. I feel as if Mary didn't pay much attention to the event or her outfit for the event
ReplyDeleteLooking good Queen Mary from the King
ReplyDeleteThe pantsuit is perfection. She looks so stylish. I have earlier mentioned her makeup a tad heavy, but it does look very effective. I love her jewelry. These are fine pieces but very attractive. I recall the earrings, but the necklace is new to me, this looks lovely, its unusual. I love it!
