Denmark's King Frederik and Queen Mary are paying a state visit to France from March 31 to April 2, 2025, at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron. On the evening of March 31, President Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron hosted a gala dinner at Élysée Palace in honor of King Frederik and Queen Mary. For the state dinner, Queen Mary wore an embroidered shirt by Clea, a Melbourne-based womenswear brand.

I was expecting way more classic gowns so this is a surprise! I like Mary's skirt a lot but I wish the blouse didn't have a see-through fabric. Mme Macron's gown suits her very well, it's a very rich colour. But I'm not sure about the stripes at the bottom. Bonus points for Mary's earrings and Mme Macron's hairstyle, and to both of them for surprising me, and for the husbands to let their wives shine!

Well... I don't like this outfit on Mary. The blouse seems too casual to be worn with the skirt, which in turn seems too voluminous to me, and they don't match. It's a shame because when Mary arrived in Paris she looked really elegant. On the other hand, Brigitte looks really chic and glamorous.
ReplyDeleteHer clothing is beautiful on the whole. The colours are harmonious. The accessories are just as appropriate. As for the chignon, I think it's suitable, because it highlights her beautiful face, as well as her earrings.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I think she could have made different choices. There's room for improvement in this combination. Let me explain:
In my opinion, a top, a more open blouse, would have been better with this long skirt; with shorter sleeves why not.
Or, if she wanted to keep that blouse, then she should have opted for a shorter skirt, knee-length for example.
But both combinations are open to improvement.
Nevertheless, she is a very beautiful woman. And i am happy to see her with such charming hosts.
-Astrid.
That’s beautifully expressed Astrid. For this skirt, I would have liked to have seen Mary’s top shaped as a long sleeved tshirt in a beautiful soft stretch fabric, scoop necked. I don’t think the sheer fabric showing the camisole works as well as a non-see-through blouse (hence no camisole lined) would have.
DeleteThose two lovely ladies look stunning in their outfits. You could wear Mary's blouse for other less festive events and it would blend right in. Versatile piece. Interesting choice . First Lady of France is always elegant, chic and is sporting a gorgeous hair style. Wow!!
ReplyDeleteMadame Macron wins here for me, elegant and playing well within her own style, she has an exquisite taste. Updo is also better than not-updo. Sorry to say that I don't like Mary's outfit here, same problem as with her white Dior costume before: Skirt and blouse refuse to build one unified composition with each other. Each leads a life of its own, they don't dance to the same melody, so to speak.
ReplyDeleteI love Mme Macron’s gown and her gorgeous sandals. She looks much better with her hair up. I can’t make up my mind about Queen Mary’s outfit. I like both the blouse and the skirt but……. Hair, earrings and make up all good.
ReplyDeleteAn easy win for first lady Brigitte Macron. Queen Mary was a major disappointment, she is drowning in the skirt and the white blouse with doilies is way too casual.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Queen Mary would have done better with a colour co-ordinated fitted top with this skirt. Mrs.Macron's dress is nice, but she always looks straight like a 2x4 in most of her outfits.
DeleteOh no, a little disappointed. After the delight of the Dior suit on their arrival,I was looking forward to seeing what Mary would wear tonight. The blouce is beautiful but in no way flatters the skirt. I think the model version is a better option, with maybe the waistband being in red rather than in pattern. I’m putting this down to a very rare misstep for Mary.
ReplyDeleteLowri.
Beautiful ladies, love Mary’s skirt and hairstyle. But who put doilies on Mary’s blouse? Aggie
ReplyDeleteI like Mary's blouse and skirt but not together. The outfit looks unbalanced and somewhat overwhelming…just too much!
ReplyDeleteAfter seeing QM in that spectacular Dior suit, this is a disappointment to me. I think the skirt and the earrings look very good together and the hairstyle is lovely, but the blouse is “too much” - big sleeves, high collar, embroidered details. Overall the outfit just has too many competing elements. (V.M.)
ReplyDeleteQM skirt looks like my Grandmother's curtains, but she looks happy.
ReplyDeleteYour grandmother’s curtains are lovely 🥰
DeleteYes Anon 03:23, that is the right comment !
DeleteI thought immediately from the first pictures, that comments here would be so & so, because Mary's outfit is too far away from classic standards. Personally I like it very much, a great touch of originality. If Mary had been a royal from Benelux, comments would have been "it is a Natan design". It demonstrates in fact that other designers have similar ideas to Natan's style, particularly regarding the skirt. I like the blouse very much. Mrs Macron looks quite good.
Better Grandma’s curtains than looking like everyone else. At least she’s got personality!
DeleteMy first thought was that the collar of the blouse was too high. the lace medallions blend in the floral theme in the skirt. Beautiful skirt and those drop earrings are spectacular. Mdm. Macron seems to be admiring the skirt with approval. Mdm Macron in a very classic style, not keen on the hem, but it does add interest to the piece. The king looks very dashing in his dark blue suit.
ReplyDeleteA no for me. The blouse takes away from a beautiful skirt, especially the camisole underneath . The camisole would have been better with a V shape neckline, this one gives width to the chest and the fabric is too casual for the occasion.
ReplyDeleteMaybe if the blouse was turned around so the keyhole was in front instead of back woild balance it better
DeleteI love Queen Mary's earrings--she's had them for quite a while but hasn't worn them for some time. They are perfect for her skirt. Her skirt is stunning--absolutely gorgeous! I t has huge possibilities for future re-wears too. Her blouse is also beautiful--the appliques elevate the style of the blouse. I'm not a huge fan of the flowy blouse with wide sleeves paired with a ballgown style skirt--everything is too wide. I would prefer to see Mary wearing a more fitted top with this skirt--and one with a portrait style neckline showing the tops of her shoulders would be so beautiful. Mme Macron seems to be impressed with Mary's skirt. I also like Mme Macron gown--the style and color are beautiful. I wish the ribbon-like bands on the hem were replaced with more of the design on the skirt but I think the fabric is designed to be like the silks we see from Bhutanese royals perhaps. Both ladies look beautiful.

I adore Queen Mary’s skirt. Madame Macron seems to like it also.
DeleteWhen I first saw it, it brought back memories of my younger, post-war childhood days when we made our dolls out of wooden clothes pegs. These were the days way before the plastic Barbie came along.
The bottom part of the peg was dressed with a full, frilly skirt and we drew a face on the top part of the peg to complete our doll.
So I call her skirt a “dolly-peg skirt”. 😀
I hope to see many “re-wears”

Dear @ Deadeggs,
Deletejust a remark from me on the go.
Your comment is great and heartwarming.
You may not have had the same plastic Barbies a good deal of children including myself used to play with but you surely had that knack for inventing toys and simple, genuine things to play with.
Those innocenti times seems to be lost forever.
I can understand that post- war times were hard to cope with but I bet you were so happy with your peggies.
When a little girl is happy, she has everything.
And I am happy too to hear this poster brought back such pleasant memories of your younger childhood.
Hope to be back commenting ASAP.
Bye👍👋
I love Mary's skirt and top very much, but separately, not worn together. Each needs a different partner piece - a simpler piece at that - that shows off the beautiful top and the rich, colourful skirt to their fair advantage.
ReplyDeleteMadame Macron is a class act and true to her style with her lovely gown.

Totally agree!

Il est rare de voir Mary porter une tenue aussi moche bien sûr à mon goût
ReplyDeleteMme Macron est toujours élégante
Froufrou
I’m completely in love with Queen Mary’s outfit. I feel it's a very confident, yet effortless, that balances both tradition and contemporary elements. The voluminous blouse, paired with the gown-like skirt, accentuates her figure. It's very flattering and modern. I recently tried on this blouse at Brown Thomas and now I have to go back for it! The silk-cotton blend feels very luxurious, and the embroidery adds an elegant touch.

ReplyDeleteI fully agree with you anon03:09, and Jane. Yes to : the “camisole” under Mary’s blouse is actually part of the garment, and does not come across to me as a separate piece.
DeleteI think that Queen Mary and Mme. Macron are both dressed beautifully. Both sporting distinctive evening looks, equally gorgeous imo. I think that the “camisole” under Mary’s blouse is actually part of the garment, and does not come across to me as a separate piece thrown on underneath. And the fabulous skirt! It is festively bouffant, but subtly and elegantly shaped and in what looks to be a lovely sateen-like fabric. I agree with the positive comments about Mme. Macron’s regal, slim gown in rich blue, and her flattering hairstyle. — Jane
ReplyDeleteMary, the most beautiful and elegant queen in the world
ReplyDeleteTotally agree!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DeleteQueen Mary looks absolutely sublime! Regal, fresh, classic, and feminine! Mrs. Macron looks matronly and dated. MR
ReplyDeleteOh ! Br. Macron does NOT deserve "looks matronly and dated", but simply classic and timeless. With the body shape she has, she cannot look matronly.
DeleteI also agree with Dorothe here below.
I agree with MaryT.
-Dorothe-
ReplyDeleteDoes Madame Macron make her own hair and make-up?
ReplyDeleteCan anyone tell me about the pins worn by HE Emmanuel Macron and King Frederick on their jackets?
ReplyDeleteWhat do they refer to?
Thank you.
-Astrid.
Exquisite outfit for QM. I love the skirt, the fabric, the volume and print. Usually no fan of flowers, but here they give a modern, fresh look to the skirt. I love the top as well, it makes the gorgeous earrings pop. A sleeveless top would have made it more evening wear however. I don’t like Mme Macron’s dress. I clings on her body and looks flimpsy. I like the print but not for this event.
ReplyDeleteJust like yesterday Queen Mary's ensemble looks not very good. Yesterday the jacket was O.K. and fitted but the skirt was too long and too wide.
ReplyDeleteToday it is again the skirt which is different than on the model. Was it the wish of the queen to wear a skirt with a high waist ? The fabric reminds me the bedroom curtains of the 50s.
Mrs Macron : I like the black ensemble she wore yesterday. The skirt should have been a little longer, let's say just under the knee. But since it is a rewear probably no possibility to make the skirt longer.
The evening dress worn by Mrs Macron is so beautiful. The color suits her and the dress is made like most of her evening dresses with a long pencil skirt and long sleeves. A style that fits her the best. To me Mrs Macron is the winner, until now.
Accessories and jewelry were perfect on both ladies.
Nice dress on B Macron!
ReplyDeleteMadame Macron est très chic dans cette robe que je ne lui connaissais pas ; magnifique son chignon qui doit comporter un postiche ?!
ReplyDeleteQueen Mary opted for an embroidered shirt by Clea, a Melbourne-based womenswear brand, paired with a floral skirt by Danish designer Lasse Spangenberg. She accessorized with 'gypsy' earrings by Ole Lynggaard, featuring cabochon-cut drops of white quartz, aquamarine, and London blue topaz, set in diamonds, valued at approximately $24,200. 😍
ReplyDeleteJust a little gutted that this was a toned-down dinner, no white or black tie affair. Therefore, the couples dressed appropriately (of course, they would), although I might find Queen Mary's blouse a little too "Victorian era daywear" style. It's a beautiful piece as such, but perhaps not in combination with that wonderful skirt for an evening state dinner, however scaled down.
ReplyDeleteI’m very surprised by the very toned-down State visit dinner, in Paris of all places! Have all official events in France been toned down by President Macron?
DeleteI like both pieces that Queen Mary is wearing…but not together. It is too voluminous. Thus the balance is all wrong. A blouse with clearer lines would have worked better.
ReplyDeleteMaybe yes
Paloma.
I remember when CP Victoria was wearing a skirt like that (she has two skirts in the same style) how many bad comments she received as well as Queen Mathilde who once wore a pearl grey/light blue silk skirt and a white blouse.
ReplyDeleteLittle bit disappointing
ReplyDelete9th picture: so nice to see all without TEACHER BRIGITTE!!!
