King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark are on a two-day state visit to Finland at the invitation of the President of Finland, Alexander Stubb. On the evening of March 4, President Alexander Stubb and his spouse, Suzanne Innes-Stubb, hosted a state banquet in the State Hall of the Presidential Palace in Helsinki in honor of King Frederik and Queen Mary. For the gala dinner, the Queen wore an evening gown by Jesper Høvring, which she first wore at the New Year's banquet in 2019.
During the state visit to Finland, Queen Mary has also chosen to wear two particularly historic pieces of jewelry. At the gala dinner in Helsinki, the Queen wore Queen Caroline Amalie's gold diadem with antique cameos, as well as Princess Vilhelmine Marie's bracelet with Vesuvian stones. These are pieces that had not been worn in over 140 years.
This is a beautiful dress, very delicate. Not fond of her make-up today, it looks less lively than usual...
ReplyDeleteBut best of all: new (old) jewelry! LOVE that Mary digs into the vaults. Now I am curious what else will come out in the future!

The tiara makes me think of Wonder Woman ;-)
Delete100% with you on this. I see why she chose this dress with the gold accents to pair with the gold jewelry but I would like to see these pieces (with different earrings) with a plainer dress. Imagine this with a gold lame dress.
DeleteAt Anon 22:45
DeleteNow see, I think the earrings are good match. Hmm. Are you thinking maybe a brushed-gold pair of some type would be better? Curious of your thoughts.
Oh, this is the greatest surprise since Catherine, PoW, showed up wearing the Strathmore Rose Tiara. It seems Queen Mary truly combed through all the Danish royal jewel's collections to find more historic pieces to wear. Love this unique tiara. It is something one would scarcely see in recent times because most of the time it seems to be about the more glitter the better. Truly, this is a huge amazement.
ReplyDeleteLove Mary's vintage bracelet and diadem. Again a re-wear dress I don't get it.
ReplyDeleteOh no, I don’t like these dresses. The green is ok, but I don’t like the different sleeves. In this case they look unbalanced. And I especially don’t like QM dress, too dark, curtainlike print …. They looked so gorgeous in the pictures earlier this day, but the eveninglooks are somewhat disappointing.
Paloma.
I think, generally speaking, that we should be very cautious criticizing on the basis of pictures ! We should see it as the real thing, which is not possible.
DeletePersonally I also like the search for some originality. And I like this one, there is some vibe of some past Scandinavian culture included in this one IMV. I like very much the jewelry which fits very well in this context. I don't have an opinion on the makeup.
The President and King are dashing; the president’s wife beautiful … but none have a chance to outshine Mary with that wonderfully shaped dress and the fascinating antique jewellery. Wow!
ReplyDeleteTotally agree with you. Queen Mary at her finest.

I agree!

ReplyDeleteMary's jewelry is to die for, such rare beauties ... and also carefully selected: not the big royal guns for an event where the lady of the house is not a royal, but looking royal anyway.
ReplyDeleteFor me the First Lady won the day time ensemble, and Mary wins the evening gown. I would love to learn more about these rarely worn jewels. LRB
ReplyDeleteIt's a beautiful elegant gala dress and very special with this historic jewelry. But I don't like the colour of the dress, the combination black and brown is a kind of dull
ReplyDeleteHave a look at the dress in another light. It’s not black and brown - but black, gold, burgundy and silver - an incredibly richly hued embroidered yet dainty material. Check here: https://www.instagram.com/p/DELIfofo4C8/?img_index=10
DeleteOn my screen, it is not brown, but gold/bronze, which goes perfectly with the jewelry. It also seems to have some glittering-sequine effect, to be seen when she moves: https://www.instagram.com/theprincessesroyals/reel/DGySNVLvnJw/
DeleteThe King and Queen have a few state visits planned out for the next few weeks and I couldn't be more excited. I do believe this is the first royal state visit of 2025, and I have mixed opinions.
ReplyDeleteBoth King Frederik and President Stubb look very handsome.
Queen Mary: Since the first pictures are from afar at first I thought she was sporting the newly acquired Rose Cut diamond bandeau. To my surprise this is an antique piece that has been in the royal collection and after 140 years it has a chance to be in the spotlight. I wish there was more sharing within royal families when it comes to tiaras and jewelry. Denmark has had several princesses that could have used this piece in gala events throughout the past century.
The golden diadem reminds of the golden bandeau owned by Princess Astrid of Norway. While I am not a big fan of this piece, I do think it matched perfectly with Queen Mary's gown. The brooch and bracelet are nice touches, but the bracelet does look rather odd going over the sleeve.
First Lady Suzanne: I think Mrs. Stubb looks very nice this evening. I absolutely love the color of her gown, it adds a bit of brightness and joy to the room. I do wish we had clearer pictures of her jewelry.
I like Mary's gown. It isn't the best she has, and the skirt is too flared for my 2025 liking, but it's still very serviceable after 6 years. But I really LOVE the jewellery, especially the gold diadem! It is a simple yet classic piece, and the 'old gold' burnishing speaks of a long-ago era of kings and queens. Very beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThe Finnish First Lady's gown has a nice design but I don't like the colour (for evening), nor the neckline. In addition, just a little bit of sparkle would have gone a long way.

I agree, my thinking exactly.
DeleteMary looks fantastic. The jewelry looks wonderful on her, especially the tiara against her dark hair, and her dress coordinates well with the jewelry.

Wonderful dress on the first lady, lovely colour!
ReplyDeleteAgree with you.
DeleteI like this dress and at first thought it was to dark. On looking closer there are crystals, so perhaps it is more glittery which lightens up the look that the photos don’t capture. Nice to see the vintage jewelry.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely surprise,a new wear of an old tiara. I love the multi colored stones.I just wonder if they’re lost in the pattern of the dress. If it had been a plain gown, the jewellery really could have shone.
ReplyDeleteI think we can look forward to more ‘finds’ from the Danish vaults. We have Princess Isabella 18th birthday next month, I wonder what her tiara moment will be!
Lowri.
Im very excited about the jewelry: is not the usual bling, but old historical pieces, just love it!
ReplyDeleteNevertheless I don't understand Mary's tendency to wear jewelry on top of lace, like the bracelet in is case. She's done it a couple of times and every time I'm on the fence about it.

22.54 Luna. I agree!
DeleteStunning historic tiara and amazing bracelet on Queen Mary! And they suit her so well. I love the burnished old gold and multi colored cameos. What a treat. Her dress is richly detailed and divinely designed to show of her figure. Glad to see it again.
ReplyDeleteDid Mary make her make-up herself this evening?
ReplyDeleteWould it be wrong if she did?
DeleteYes in other photos you can see it is black, silver and gold. Looks much brigher and not leaning on brown
ReplyDeleteDiadem:
ReplyDeleteQueen Caroline Amalie was married to King Christian VIII. Her gold diadem with 11 antique cameos was crafted in the 1820s. The cameos were collected by the King during the pair's visit to Italy (ca. 1819), where they visited Rome og Pompeii.
Bracelet:
King Frederik VII bought the bracelet with stones from Vesuvius during a trip to Italy in 1828, shortly before his wedding to Princess Vilhelmine Marie.
According to kongehuset.dk the pieces of jewelry haven't been worn for over 140 years. They are part of 'Kongernes Samling' (The Kings' Collection) and displayed in 'Skatkammeret' (Treasure chamber) under Rosenborg castle.
That Gold diadem is gorgeous. I like Queen Mary’s dress too. But her jewelry stole the show for me. As someone who is nkt a huge fan of diamond, I’m glad she brought these gold pieces out of the royal vault. I might just show this to my husband to get something commissioned.

Yes the gown and jewels are amazing but what stands out most to me is how Queen Mary carries herself and her posture is amazing. She does this with such ease and grace and she makes it look effortless. The best decision King Frederick ever made is when he chose her to be his wife and his future Queen which she seems to be born to be in that role!
ReplyDeleteTotally agree with Fitzhugh!
DeleteI don't like anything what I see here. The dress, the tiara, the bracelet, the colors, nothing.
ReplyDeleteGosh 7:16, that’s no good. Just as well it was Mary invited to the event and not you, because she’s revelling in her gorgeous luxurious feminine gown that is perfect for her, her beautiful hairdo and the chance to spend an evening with the Finns, all while wearing a stunning array of jewellery that has spent most of its life locked away. A truly stunning queen!
DeleteAgree, the curtain gown and the fake looking jewels is not a good combo. No wonder the jewels have not been seen in 140 years.
DeleteI am afraid I must agree with Anonymous 5/3 17:01.
DeleteMary looks absolutely stunning! I love the tiara and I hope to see it again, absolutely beautiful.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous evening dress on Mary. I love those old jewels, I feel it is a tribute to the hosts that she chooses to wear such special jewellery.
ReplyDeleteThe first lady's outfit is a gorgeous colour, but the cut is a bit too complicated. A simpler design would have worked even better. -Siri
I don't understand why the royal house has jewellery they don't use. Why on earth has these not been worn in 140 years. A scandal in itself. They are to pretty just to be sitting on a shelf.
ReplyDeleteOld jewelry like this should stay in a museum so everyone can see them. I think it is better for old jewels and tiara's not to wear them anymore because they become more and more fragile. Besides I think the combination of the dress and the jewelry is not very successful. This type of jewelry must be worn with a dress in a plain fabric. I am thinking of colors like off-white, very light beige, very light curry, vanilla ,.......
DeleteMary’s make up is too heavy but otherwise she looks fine. The bracelet looks clunky and uncomfortable.
ReplyDeletePerfection from head to toe. Love the new Tiara and bracelet
ReplyDeletecss.
Queen Mary is a vision.
ReplyDeleteHer jewellery is to die for, what gorgeous pieces!
The First Lady truly stands out though I feel her evening gown looks more summer-y as far as the fresh green shade and model are concerned.
Anyway, I understand her.
It's not so unusual to see nordic ladies wearing short sleeves indoors as buildings are generally well- heated and they are so used to low temperatures!
This gown is sensational. The gold belt is a welcome addition and clever choice. It helps pick up the flecks of gold in the fabric of her gown. The skirt of her gown suits beautifully, perfection. Love her tiara and earrings. She looks stunning. The first lady looks fabulous in her evening gown, this is a gorgeous color, glorious shade of green and suits her beautifully.
