King and Queen of Denmark Attend State Banquet in Helsinki

King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark are on a two-day state visit to Finland at the invitation of the President of Finland, Alexander Stubb. On the evening of March 4, President Alexander Stubb and his spouse, Suzanne Innes-Stubb, hosted a state banquet in the State Hall of the Presidential Palace in Helsinki in honor of King Frederik and Queen Mary. For the gala dinner, the Queen wore an evening gown by Jesper Høvring, which she first wore at the New Year's banquet in 2019.

During the state visit to Finland, Queen Mary has also chosen to wear two particularly historic pieces of jewelry. At the gala dinner in Helsinki, the Queen wore Queen Caroline Amalie's gold diadem with antique cameos, as well as Princess Vilhelmine Marie's bracelet with Vesuvian stones. These are pieces that had not been worn in over 140 years.

This is a beautiful dress, very delicate. Not fond of her make-up today, it looks less lively than usual...
But best of all: new (old) jewelry! LOVE that Mary digs into the vaults. Now I am curious what else will come out in the future!

The tiara makes me think of Wonder Woman ;-)

100% with you on this. I see why she chose this dress with the gold accents to pair with the gold jewelry but I would like to see these pieces (with different earrings) with a plainer dress. Imagine this with a gold lame dress.

  2. Oh, this is the greatest surprise since Catherine, PoW, showed up wearing the Strathmore Rose Tiara. It seems Queen Mary truly combed through all the Danish royal jewel's collections to find more historic pieces to wear. Love this unique tiara. It is something one would scarcely see in recent times because most of the time it seems to be about the more glitter the better. Truly, this is a huge amazement.

Love Mary's vintage bracelet and diadem. Again a re-wear dress I don't get it.

Oh no, I don’t like these dresses. The green is ok, but I don’t like the different sleeves. In this case they look unbalanced. And I especially don’t like QM dress, too dark, curtainlike print …. They looked so gorgeous in the pictures earlier this day, but the eveninglooks are somewhat disappointing.

D'accord avec Anonyme 19 : 31. Décevant est le bon mot.
Les motifs et les couleurs de la robe de Mary sont un peu lugubres à mon avis. Et que de surcharges avec le ruban, les médailles et les broches. Paloma.

The President and King are dashing; the president’s wife beautiful … but none have a chance to outshine Mary with that wonderfully shaped dress and the fascinating antique jewellery. Wow!

Mary's jewelry is to die for, such rare beauties ... and also carefully selected: not the big royal guns for an event where the lady of the house is not a royal, but looking royal anyway.

For me the First Lady won the day time ensemble, and Mary wins the evening gown. I would love to learn more about these rarely worn jewels. LRB

It's a beautiful elegant gala dress and very special with this historic jewelry. But I don't like the colour of the dress, the combination black and brown is a kind of dull

Have a look at the dress in another light. It’s not black and brown - but black, gold, burgundy and silver - an incredibly richly hued embroidered yet dainty material. Check here: https://www.instagram.com/p/DELIfofo4C8/?img_index=10

On my screen, it is not brown, but gold/bronze, which goes perfectly with the jewelry. It also seems to have some glittering-sequine effect, to be seen when she moves: https://www.instagram.com/theprincessesroyals/reel/DGySNVLvnJw/

  10. The King and Queen have a few state visits planned out for the next few weeks and I couldn't be more excited. I do believe this is the first royal state visit of 2025, and I have mixed opinions.

Both King Frederik and President Stubb look very handsome.

Queen Mary: Since the first pictures are from afar at first I thought she was sporting the newly acquired Rose Cut diamond bandeau. To my surprise this is an antique piece that has been in the royal collection and after 140 years it has a chance to be in the spotlight. I wish there was more sharing within royal families when it comes to tiaras and jewelry. Denmark has had several princesses that could have used this piece in gala events throughout the past century.

The golden diadem reminds of the golden bandeau owned by Princess Astrid of Norway. While I am not a big fan of this piece, I do think it matched perfectly with Queen Mary's gown. The brooch and bracelet are nice touches, but the bracelet does look rather odd going over the sleeve.

First Lady Suzanne: I think Mrs. Stubb looks very nice this evening. I absolutely love the color of her gown, it adds a bit of brightness and joy to the room. I do wish we had clearer pictures of her jewelry.

I like Mary's gown. It isn't the best she has, and the skirt is too flared for my 2025 liking, but it's still very serviceable after 6 years. But I really LOVE the jewellery, especially the gold diadem! It is a simple yet classic piece, and the 'old gold' burnishing speaks of a long-ago era of kings and queens. Very beautiful.

The Finnish First Lady's gown has a nice design but I don't like the colour (for evening), nor the neckline. In addition, just a little bit of sparkle would have gone a long way.

Mary looks fantastic. The jewelry looks wonderful on her, especially the tiara against her dark hair, and her dress coordinates well with the jewelry.

I like this dress and at first thought it was to dark. On looking closer there are crystals, so perhaps it is more glittery which lightens up the look that the photos don’t capture. Nice to see the vintage jewelry.

What a lovely surprise,a new wear of an old tiara. I love the multi colored stones.I just wonder if they’re lost in the pattern of the dress. If it had been a plain gown, the jewellery really could have shone.
I think we can look forward to more ‘finds’ from the Danish vaults. We have Princess Isabella 18th birthday next month, I wonder what her tiara moment will be!

  16. Im very excited about the jewelry: is not the usual bling, but old historical pieces, just love it!
Nevertheless I don't understand Mary's tendency to wear jewelry on top of lace, like the bracelet in is case. She's done it a couple of times and every time I'm on the fence about it.

Stunning historic tiara and amazing bracelet on Queen Mary! And they suit her so well. I love the burnished old gold and multi colored cameos. What a treat. Her dress is richly detailed and divinely designed to show of her figure. Glad to see it again.
