Queen Mathilde of Belgium is undertaking a three-day working visit to Costa Rica in her role as Honorary President of UNICEF Belgium. The field visit is organized by UNICEF Belgium and UNICEF Costa Rica. On the second day of her visit, the Queen visited La Cometa, a public childcare center in Tirrases, in the province of San José. Queen Mathilde then visited the Lloverá Foundation (Fundación Lloverá), an organization that supports and guides homeless people in Costa Rica.

I like this dress, colour, fit, the only negative is the sleeve, it is alittle tight.
ReplyDeleteI'm not too crazy about the colour combination of this dress (minor quibble), but apart from that everything else about it is fantastic on Mathilde. It fits her so well, and to her credit, she wears it perfectly. Lovely!

Pink and green is actually a classic combination. The two colors compliment each other very well. I am always reminded of preppy clothes when I think of pink and green.
Delete@Anon 15:56 Yes in truth I usually like green and pink when paired together. In this case, it's just the tone of both individual colours that are clashing with my ideal. Too bright. If they were paler versions of green and pink, or one was paler than the other, I would have preferred the mix better.

I agree, the fit is spot on, and Queen Mathilde really pulls it off. She has a great ability to wear even tricky styles with confidence.
DeleteBeautiful dress and colors on QM! MR
ReplyDeleteLovely pictures, very pretty dress, suits her well, wonderful queen.
ReplyDeleteAgree!🙂
DeleteI agree too!

One of her best dresses! She is rocking this visit fashionwise, and she looks very engaged and invested as always.

I may not fairly be comparing humanitarian visits, but I notice over many tours that Mathilde doesn’t dress down much, wears designer labels, plenty of jewellery, etc when she visits into poverty versus eg Mary who wears low key trousers, simple shirts, and removes all luxury items. I prefer that Mary style when visiting into poverty and on humanitarian visits. Other opinions on this? Ps I don’t doubt Mathilde’s compassion or purpose, and in always remembering she trained as a speech pathologist, I know she was aiming her career to a helping profession; just thinking about clothes for visits into poorer areas.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with your comment, which is well and politely written

DeleteI think you make a fair point. I cannot believe that there would go no thought, planning, effort, consideration etc into collecting a wardrobe for these visits. It would be interesting to know how this works. The Belgian court usually does not communicate about the fashion that's been worn by the members of the royal family, so we won't know for sure.
I did read an article prior to this visit where it was made clear that Costa Rica is not an extremely poor country. They rank as one of the most prosperous countries in Latin-America, and allegedly are also called the "Switzerland of Central-America". Their GDP has risen 85% over the last 25 years. So for this visit that could explain the designer wardrobe.
I also think Mathilde usually re-wears clothes on these visits (correct me if I'm wrong, I'm just going by my own memory here...). Would be fun to know the ins and outs on how this is planned behind the scenes ;-)
Queen Mathilde doesn't look overdressed to me. I don't expect the queen of a country to dress down to blend in with the crowd. She is a queen, just like Queen Elizabeth was, who always dressed up and looked elegant.
DeleteI don’t see this dress looking high end, without looking at the label who would know.It is hot, so a nice loose fitting skirt on the dress would be comfortable, no hosiery and sandals. Colourful for the children. I also think that there is an expectation from the people that a queen would dress up for them.
Delete@Anon 15:20 Your points are well taken. I think she has chosen comfortable, colorful clothes that are going to keep her cool in the warmer weather.
DeleteTo Anon 08:28 I don't agree. Mathilde is truly engaged, interested in the children or anybody she meets, true, not pretending to be interested etc. She is Belgium's First Lady, the queen consort and she does not have to wear cheap fabrics in order to adapt to her environment. What counts is her engagement on behalf of those children or poor people - and she is truly respected and loved for that. Maria Teresa is far more dressed up and I don't know whether Mary really dresses down. And what about Charlène de Monaco?
DeleteJust nonsense. She’s dressed just fine, colorful, sober, right for the occasion!
DeletePersonally I do not think that Queen Mathilde is overdressed at all. Above that she is engaged in a lovely and warm way. ♥︎

@ Anon 8 28, nice to have someone state their opinion and ask what others think instead of aggressive arguments. It’s an interesting point but I think I’m with Anon 15 20. The people who turn out to see royals don’t want to see them ‘dressed down’ in my view. Part of the excitement is the glamour. That’s why I also support Queen Maxima’s often flamboyant outfits. Personally, I don’t really want to see a Queen/Princess in jeans. I want gorgeous. 👗👠👑

Colors are fine, however not a good dress for her. Time fashion moves out of the 50/60s
ReplyDeleteDon’t think she bought these dresses in the 50’s …
Delete50/60s dresses never go out of style on women who have the right figure for it. Queen Mathilde certainly does, in my opinion.
DeleteDamsel Dragonfly
Some styles are iconic and never really go out of style. Shirt dresses fall under that umbrella, along with sheath dresses. The fabrics and prints may change, but the basic silhouette remains largely unchanged.

DeleteYou are right she didn't bought these dresses in the 50's, she was not even born yet.
Queen Mathilde's dress is a cotton dress bought in 2022 at designer Diane von Furstenberg. I understand that she once again wears a cotton dress in the hot climate of Costa Rica. The jewelry she is wearing are phantasy earrings in strow and gold colored metal by Sézane (yesterday). The handbag she is wearing today is also by Sézane and belongs to CP Elisabeth her daughter. It is not in leather but a kind of raffia or other natural material. The jewelry she has on her left wrist is the jewelry she is wearing every day and in all circumstances her watch, a couple of bracelets with a meaning and a blue sapphire ring. On her right hand she is wearing her wedding ring.It has been said since the beginning of this trip that Costa Rica is not one of the poorest countries which receive help from Unicef. But there are some goals they wish to achieve or already have and since Queen Mathilde is visiting every 2 year a poor country as SDG advocate and in the meantime also became President of Unicef Belgium she is visiting this country to see what progress they have made already. Queen Mary of Denmark does not make so much visits to poor countries and she never shows up at the international conferences of Unicef in New York. Her role cannot be compared with the role of Queen Mathilde in this matter. The climate in Costa Rica must be very humid of what I heard. It is better to wear every day a fresh cotton dress she already has, instead of buying a whole new tropical outfit (which is not cheap) of pants and T-shirts, other shirts with long sleeves, special shoe wear, etc.... Since it is not the first time she is visiting hot countries who need support, I think she knows what she is doing. There are pictures on other sites of this visit of Queen Mathilde to Costa Rica. On the first picture here you see a little girl who is walking to Queen Mathilde to embrace her, well that was just the first one of a whole group of children who embraced her. After that she took a couple of these children by the hand and walked with them to look at their drawings and what they had made. The children who are very young stay at the cribs and kindergarten when the parents work the whole day in the sun in the coffee fields. They can stay there and play out of the sun, they receive food and clothes and are looked after. Without the help of Unicef it was not possible.
ReplyDeleteIt’s clear that Queen Mathilde is very thoughtful in both her attire and her approach to these visits. The cotton dress is a practical choice for the hot, humid climate of Costa Rica, and it’s great to see her sticking with outfits that are both comfortable and meaningful to her. The fact that she uses the same jewelry consistently shows her personal connection to those pieces.
DeleteShe seems deeply committed to the cause, with her visits providing real insight into the progress being made. It’s interesting to compare her ongoing advocacy with Queen Mary of Denmark’s, as Mathilde truly seems to focus her efforts on countries in need. Her engagement with the children and the time she spends connecting with them speaks volumes about her dedication to her work.
I agree, sometimes practicality and thoughtfulness in travel attire outweigh the need for something entirely new, especially when she’s already been to similar places and knows exactly what works best for the climate.
Again: belt under her breast. She is simply not somebody looking good with a belted waist.
ReplyDeleteYou are not wrong. She is short waisted, and this is a problem she has often when wearing a belt, especially wider belts. I think she looks better in clothes that don't point out her proportions.
DeleteBut compared to the picture of the model I don't think there's a lot of difference: they both look like the belt is positioned quite high
DeleteBeautiful dress that was in her wardrobe for 3-4 years. Perfect for the weather.

Magnifiques couleurs de cette robe imprimée mais je regrette qu'elle soit ceinturée trop haut ; je lui envie ses boucles d'oreilles !
ReplyDeleteNice dress again.

Lovely dress--I love the bright colors on her! What I see here is how marvelous Queen Mathilde looks with all the children--joyful comes to mind. She is such a natural with kids and they love her back.
ReplyDeleteJanet
I agree fully!
DeleteThis is a very pretty dress, and very flattering on the Queen, love it!
