On January 7, 2025, King Frederik X and Queen Mary of Denmark hosted the third traditional New Year reception at Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen. The reception was attended by officers from the Armed Forces and the Danish Emergency Management Agency, as well as representatives of major national organizations and royal patronages. Prince Joachim also attended the reception.
At the reception, Queen Mary wore a dress by Julie Fagerholdt. The Queen had first worn this dress at the 2008 New Year’s reception. Later, the dress was redesigned into its current form by the Danish designer and dressmaker Birgit Hallstein. The Queen wore the updated dress for both the 2017 and 2023 New Year’s receptions.
Queen Mary is wearing Hereditary Princess Caroline's Antique Diamond Earrings along with one of Queen Josefina’s Diamond Brooches. The Antique Diamond Parure, originating from Hereditary Princess Caroline, the daughter of King Frederik VI, includes a pair of versatile earrings dating back to circa 1840. These earrings can be adjusted to different lengths and feature pear-shaped diamonds paired with diamond buttons. The parure was acquired at an auction in 1881 by Queen Lovisa, the great-grandmother of Queen Margrethe.
Finally a dress to boast about, on day 3. The hair is a bit boring, but oh, well.
ReplyDeleteQueen Mary, the most beautiful and elegant queen
ReplyDeletePretty gown though in some pictures it looks dove gray and in another more of a light blue. Not the best color for Mary as it washes her out. Her hair looks lovely pulled back from her face and it's a very flattering style. Would like to get a closer look at her earrings.
ReplyDeleteVery elegant. So much nicer than the second receptions outfit.
ReplyDeleteAgree. Lovely dress and a considerable improvement on the white one.

For the life of me, I cannot understand why Queen Mary favors this "keyhole" style of dress. She has for many years and I have found it at times inappropriate and otherwise just an unnecessary addition to an otherwise lovely design style.
ReplyDeleteWhat’s inappropriate about it? It’s not like her bosom is falling all over the place!
DeleteWhile the keyhole design might not appeal to all, it could have been a way for her to make an otherwise traditional garment feel slightly more modern or unique.
DeleteThe dress, which was actually a dress and a jacket, was much more beautiful in its original design. I am not a fan of Mary's clothes but this piece was really spot on. She has used it many times, and when I saw the remake I thought why.
DeletePlease, what is inappropriate about a keyhole? I am baffled by that statement.
Delete@13:51 thanks for your interesting opinion; unsure why others are jumping on your opinion! I notice too plenty of keyholes; I think it comes from buying a wide variety of blouses with deep cuts at the neckline and her getting them tailored to be less revealing!!

DeleteIt's a stunning dress teamed with a stunning bolero.
As simple as that and easy to spot.
Why all this fuss?
Beautiful. The shimmering quality of the material adds elegance to the neutral colour (if any more elegance needed). Love her hair worn like this, it lets the festive earrings shine.
ReplyDeleteThis looks much better though technically the yesterday's white gown & the whole outfit should have been more of a success. But no. I am not that much of an expert to identify what makes the difference: dress colour/cut/hair style/makeup/face expression but she looks much more into the element of being a young, confident and pretty queen than she did yesterday.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely!
DeleteIk think it is her hair: out of her face becomes her far better.
I also love this soft coloured dress with long sleeves.
Completely perfect: from her hair via earrings to the colour of the dress and fabrics to her shoes. I hope they get a good rest (and a simple meal and nice run) after the sequence of banquets!
ReplyDeleteQueen Mary is pure elegance!
ReplyDeleteCette couleur lui va bien et a l'avantage de rendre le ruban moins visible, ouf. La broche carrée est originale. Paloma.
ReplyDeleteHer hair worn like this makes her face softer ! Beautiful
ReplyDeleteIt really does…makes her look younger too. (Not that she looks old!)
DeleteThe danes sure loves to celebrate the new year!
ReplyDeleteI don’t like the bodice on this dress, there is something about vertical ruching , the way it cling that is not becoming. The colour is nice , I especially like her hair style is way, very soft looking
ReplyDeleteI have always loved that Mary and her seamstresses get creative and rework her clothes. This one has been redone several times for different New Years’ receptions. It’s always a fun surprise to see it again with a new twist. I love how the new pin at the keyhole neck coordinates with her earrings. Mary’s hair here looks great but her makeup is a little blotchy, although maybe it’s the lighting.
ReplyDeleteTrès joli modèle dont la couleur lui va à ravir ; pour les bijoux, je n'aime que ses boucles d'oreilles pendantes composées de petits diamants !
ReplyDeleteFrederik and Mary look beatiful both. I just hope that on the matter of heart does not leave for tomorrow what is for the present. Relaxing after busy day with each other, love each other and being in love, respect, passion and everything what makes life such simple. And sure danes know how to celebrate new year!!! :) Everything said with respect. Poltroni
ReplyDeleteI love that this is the 4th outing of this dress. QM takes sustainability in fashion seriously. I hope our other royal ladies follow suit on the same level.
ReplyDeleteToday’s look has a softer finish to it.
I believe the brooch is from the royal collection, but does anyone know about the earrings?
Lowri.
This is a beautiful gown, gorgeous color, the embellishments are splendid, adding interest to the skirt. Love her earrings and brooch, perfectly placed.
ReplyDeleteThe color and style of Mary’s dress look beautiful and elegant on her. I like the square shape and the placement of the brooch at the top of the keyhole neck.

I don't think grey is Mary's colour;makes her skin look dull.Too much detail on the skirt;would have looked nicer if it was chiffon and floaty. The brooch needed to have some colour;also the earrings;needed some other stones than diamonds.Jewellrey only looks elegant when it enhances the clothes you are wearing.(Tara)
ReplyDeleteI agree Tara the beautiful jewelry just blends right into the gown, it would
Deletehave been nice to have some umph and bling, bling, after all it is a New Years celebration.....HAPPY NEW YEARS!!!
Fashion is such a funny thing - you can see the ensemble as lacking, I can see it as absolute perfection! I think the colour is marvellous on Mary, love the fabrics, and think her accessories beautifully chosen.
DeleteQueen Mary looks gorgeous! I love how she has used this gown over the years--and this most recent version is perfect as she is wearing today. I love how the intricate designs of the earrings and brooch reflect the beautiful brocade-like design in the skirt. The incorporation of these heirloom jewels with this dress is a wonderful idea. Her hair is so beautiful--and the off the face style showcases those stunning earrings. I have always wondered what became of the jacket that was part of this gown. Perhaps we will see Mary find a way to use it in the future!
ReplyDeleteJanet
Janet, I had a look on UFO blog to see this is a top and skirt and not a dress; even more flexible!
