Princess Birgitta, elder sister of King Carl Gustaf of Sweden, passed away in Mallorca on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, at the age of 87. Birgitta Ingeborg Alice was born in 1937 at Haga Palace and was the second-oldest child of Prince Gustaf Adolf and Princess Sibylla. Princess Birgitta grew up at Haga Palace alongside her four siblings: Princess Margaretha, Princess Désirée, Princess Christina, and Prince Carl Gustaf.
Princess Birgitta married Johann Georg of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen (1932–2016) in 1961. The couple had three children: Carl Christian (born 1962), Désirée (born 1963), and Hubertus (born 1966). Princess Birgitta had lived for several decades on the Spanish island of Mallorca. King Carl Gustaf has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff at Drottningholm Palace and Haga Palace on Thursday, December 5.
