On November 15, 2024, Princess Yuriko of Japan passed away at St. Luke's International Hospital in Tokyo at the age of 101. Princess Yuriko, the wife of wartime Emperor Hirohito’s brother and the oldest member of the imperial family, had recently experienced a decline in health, according to palace officials. The princess had been using a pacemaker since 1999 and was notably absent from the 2019 enthronement of Emperor Naruhito.

The Imperial Household Agency issued a statement to announce the passing of Princess Mikasa. Later that day, Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako, and Princess Aiko visited the Mikasa residence to pay their respects. Following her death, the imperial family entered a period of mourning, as per tradition. Emperor Naruhito's family, the Emeritus couple, the Akishino family, and the Hitachi couple are observing five days of mourning. Emperor Naruhito has also canceled his official duties during this period.

Princess Mikasa (1923 – 2024) was a member of the Imperial House of Japan as the wife of Takahito, Prince Mikasa, the fourth son of Emperor Taishō and Empress Teimei. Before her death, she was the last surviving paternal great-aunt by marriage of Emperor Naruhito, the oldest member of the imperial family, and the final living member born in the Taishō era.

  4. I first heard about this "yesterday" (because of the different time zones) on the Japanese news channel NHK World-JAPAN. She led a fascinating life and what a witness to history! I think they said WWII broke out right after their engagement announcement and for a while she had to live in a shelter because of the bombings. Apparently she was a big advocate for children causes and very beloved by the Japanese people. Hollywood should really make a film. I don't think I'd hear of her before yesterday.

  10. It is sad news for anyone to lose a family member, but I'm happy that she lived a full life to this age. Mat she rest in peace.

I wondering then, whether some of the ladies that we see from time to time as part of the current royal entourage could be her daughters-in-law or grand daughters? Princess Takamado and Princess Tomohito for example, perhaps? Does anyone know?
