On October 8, 2024, Prince Guillaume was appointed Lieutenant Representative by his father, Grand Duke Henri, meaning that Prince Guillaume now assumes most of his father’s constitutional powers. On his official birthday, June 23, 2024, Grand Duke Henri announced his plans to appoint his son as Lieutenant Representative (regent) in October. Traditionally, this signals Grand Duke Henri's intention to abdicate in the future.

They all look very good! Stephanie’s dress and hairstyle are particularly lovely and flattering. MT has allowed the deep red color to provide enough drama and she toned down the bling for this official occasion.

Stephanie has really upgraded her style this year with simple bold colors. Also nice matching style with mother in law.

    1. I totally agree! It's a welcome evolution that flatters her, and makes her at the level expected for her role and responsibilities. Bravo!

After a long time, I can finally praise Grand Duchess Maria Theresa. I agree with an old well-known saying: there is beauty in simplicity. The simple clean lines of the raspberry red dress and the right length for her figure, classic real jewelry. Very well.
Princess Stephanie - also a very good outfit, very propriet, just a small note: the yellow dress could have been 10 cm longer.

I agree with you. GD Maria Theresa’s dress is one of the nicest items she has worn recently. Beautiful colour, great cut, flattering neckline and no fussy bits. While Princess Stéphanie also looks good, the dress needs those extra few centimetres, as you say, for the best look

  5. HGD Stephanie will never be a Royal fashion plate but her innate class will serve her husband and her adopted country very well. And those delicious little boys!

Her adopted country ? Belgium and the GD of Luxemburg are almost the same. The Belgian Province of Luxemburg and the GD of Luxemburg have a border in common but the people who live there are practically the same.

    2. Stephanie was born a citizen of Belgium. She took Luxembourgish citizenship when she married and I remember the public grumbling since she slipped the citizenship process. She stated at the time that she would not keep her Belgian citizenship. So no. Despite their close proximity Belgium and Luxembourg are "not the same"
      They are separate countries.

      @ Lela
I didn't say that Belgium and the GD of Luxemburg were the same country.
I said that the people who live there are practically the same (meaning same mentality, same culture, ....).
A similar phenomena you can find between Tirol (Austria) and Bavaria (Germany) same mentality, same culture, same regional language,....

Both MT and Stephanie look really good in these simple, monochromatic dresses, but especially Stephanie. This style suits her very well. Would have liked MT's dress to be just an inch shorter but she still looks great in it.

Not every young queen likes to wear a lot of jewelry. Not every queen has a lot of jewelry at her disposal, unless she is buying new jewelry when it is not in the vaults of the royal family.
A beautiful piece of jewelry worn alone or accompanied by one or two other simple pieces looks generally much better than wearing all the diamonds together one can find in the safe of the palace.

Paloma.

Yes, isn’t it wonderful? She can look so elegant at times; during the period of her engagement to Guillaume she often looked quite chic, and I know she could do so again on a consistent basis with the proper guidance.

I could cry — the classic, matching shoes and bag, the chic, flattering dress, the elegant hairstyle — she is a dream. (A dream that I hope is the first of many more to come 🥲.) Brava!!!

HGD Stéphanie's dress is beautiful, but a bit too short. Her knees should have been covered not because it is not done, but because it goes better with the dress. I like the neckline and the soft yellow color. GD Maria Teresa's dress is also beautiful but a bit too long. The dress should end just under her knees The wine red color goes very well with M.T.'s hair and skin tone.

  18. The history of abdication ( a looming one, in this case) in these countries (Luxembourg, The Netherlands) is really something to be aware of. It makes the transition from one monarch to the next a much more pleasant experience than one would have with the passing of one's father/mother and having to take over in a time of deep mourning. Queen Margrethe of Denmark saw first hand what this meant to King Charles III, and she reacted, as she wanted to spare her son that harsh process - and spare herself from the Danish people witnessing her health decline while still in the public eye. The Netherlands are doing the abdication thing already for a long, long period of time, Luxembourg followed that path in recent decades as well. Perhaps we will see more of it in other monarchies in future. In any case, I'm glad for the HGDucal couple to fully take over in a more happy setting in the near future. And as this is about fashion: They all looked truly fab and befitting the occasion.

      @ DSC
You forgot Belgium. King Albert II abdicated in favour of his son King Philippe not long after Queen Beatrix did the same in favour of her son King Willem Alexander. King Albert II had already severe heart problems and a chirurgical intervention when he decided to abdicate. We will see this more and more in the future that kings and queens will abdicate just like a commoner takes his/her pension.

    2. To Anon16:56 I did not include the Belgian and the Spanish abdications because the previous monarchs there (Albert II, and Juan Carlos) were basically forced to step away from the throne due to scandals they had been involved in. These countries normally have no history of handing over the throne to the person next in line. They only did so because there was no other option at that point. Maybe health reason also played into it, but not overly much.

I know what you mean about King Albert II but you cannot compare him to Juan Carlos of Spain. King Albert was a heart patient already when he decided to abdicate. The whole process of his fathership of Princess Delphine was published officially in the press after he was already abdicated. Everything has been made legal by now. I won't repeat here all the scandals in which Juan Carlos is involved and for which there is still no solution until now. In Belgium there has been another case much more complicated than King Albert II daughter Delphine. The case of his father King Leopold III who was forced to abdicate after WWII and which brought King Boudouin on the throne. Also a long story which I cannot describe here. So Belgium has indeed a history of handing over the throne to the next in line.

How lovely both ladies look! Stephanie looks so elegant and her dress is beautifully fitted. Maria Theresa looks marvelous in this deep shade of red--it is a beautiful color for her. The simple lines of the dress very much suit her and I like her choice of gray accessories. What I love about Stephanie's dress is that it drapes beautifully on her. I also love her up-do which is perfect for that dramatic neckline.

  20. As noted by several commentators above, both RL look very good in their choices for this important ceremony.

As I've come back to look at GD Stephanie's dress I've realized it has a similar 60s vibe to Pss Eugenie's dress at the Sussex wedding. They have similar body types with similar wardrobe challenges. Also similar to CPss Mette-Marit. All three seem to look best in somewhat less fitted silhouettes and really y look nice in squared off tunic knits with slender pants.

Perhaps they could chip in on a mutual stylist ;^)
