On the evening of October 24, 2024, Norway's King Harald and Queen Sonja hosted a gala dinner for Members of Parliament (Storting) at the Royal Palace in Oslo. The King and Queen are hosting the traditional Storting dinner, which was established as a regular tradition by King Haakon in 1906, but has roots dating back to the union era. At the traditional annual gala dinner held for the 106th time, Crown Prince Haakon and Princess Astrid were also present.

  2. How is the old lady in the wheelchair managing without a foot rest attached to her chair! maybe she has wheels on her shoes :-)

    1. It seems she is managing well, because she has enough money to buy one, if she needed one.

    2. That “old lady” is Princess Astrid, daughter of HM King Olav V and sister of HM King Harald V of Norway, and a descendant of TM King Christian IX of Denmark and Queen Victoria of the UK.

      Comunque Astrid, sorella del re.

    5. The 'old lady' is Princess Astrid, King Harald sister, what a rude comment.

    6. I’ve noticed that too. If you look at past pictures it’s the same; can’t they get a wheelchair with foot rest. It must be uncomfortable.

    7. Dear Princess Astrid, she is quite comfortable just holding her feet up. The footrest can get in the way when raised and the chair just looks neater without. I love that the CP pushes his aunt’s chair. Would not see that with the Brits.

    8. "Old Lady' that is a very unfortunate comment.

    9. If you ask me it is a very old fashion wheel chair she has. She is almost loosing her left shoe.

Not everybody is familiar with who is who in the royal families. Like I said before, many people don't take the time to read the introduction on top of the pictures. How do you think Princess Astrid must be called then when you don't know who she is. "Old lady" is not rude, we cannot say the "not so young lady in the wheel chair" can we ? Or "the lady with the high age" ?

    11. @Anon 17:13 Firstly, if people do not read the picture's descriptions before commenting, they are at fault. The descriptions are brief and explain what we need to know, especially when we don't know who is pictured. One can only assume they are being lazy because they are able to write comments, thus leading to the assumption that they can read.
Secondly, the way to describe Princess Astrid, when not knowing who she is, is to ask who the lady in the wheelchair is. No need to add a qualifier like "old". She appears to be the only person in a wheelchair. Should there be more than one person in a wheelchair, a description of her gown (the lady in the wheelchair wearing the gold gown) is far more polite. It is simply good manners.

I could spell out the way the body works, including loss of muscle mass around the age of 35, the need to keep working at maintaining what muscles you can, throughout old age. Princess Astrid may look old to the original commenter, however, I would point out that by holding her feet up while sitting in a wheelchair, she is actively engaging her 'core' muscles, which in turn helps keep her stronger. The lack of foot rests is simple. The footrests get in the way of tables/chairs, and she can easily maneuver her chair at her discretion during the evening.
The ladies and gentlemen all look lovely/handsome.

  3. Queen Sonja look smashing in red, white and blue. Can’t see what Princess Astrid was wearing, but what a trooper. The last two pictures are so lovely, I always get moved when old couples show love and affection.

-Dorothe-

    1. The wine bottles are on a side table behind the royal couple so that they can be served before the other participants at the gala dinner party.

  8. The chair probably comes with the leg/foot rests, but like many older people I know they choose not to use them. Also if she remains in her chair, she can manoeuvre around the room on her own to engage with the guest. Being in a wheelchair does not mean they are invalids, just cant walk distance or stand for any length of time.

    1. Or the leg rest is covered by her dress, while the foot rest has been removed (both are usually detachable). Who would hide away gold shoes with a bow! Princess Astrid makes me smile every time I see her.

  10. Love the deep blue and old gold colours of the gowns worn by Queen Sonia and Princess Astrid. The older ladies can still show the youngsters how to glam up for a formal occasion

  13. What a wonderful groups of pictures! The last 2 photos of the king and queen are beautiful--what love and happiness between this marvelous couple. The photo of Queen Sonja by herself is hilarious! I'm sure its just a second in time but it looks like she's really giving someone a major side-eye that says that nonsense better stop right now! How great Princess Astrid looks--and I love her gown. Love that Sonja has chosen to wear one of her major tiaras as it looks very good with her bright blue gown. This gown is what you might call an oldie but a goodie. It fits her so well and is such a pretty color--she looks amazing.
