Queen Jetsun Pema, accompanied by Prince Namgyel and Prince Ugyen, attended the re-opening and consecration ceremony of the Wangduechhoeling Palace Museum and Cultural Center. Princess Sonam Dechan, Princess Kesang Choden, and other members of the Royal Family were also present at the ceremony, which was presided over by the Dorji Lopen. The palace was built in 1857 by Gongsa Jigme Namgyal, the father of Bhutan's first king.
The decade-long project to restore the historic Wangduechhoeling Palace and establish the Museum and Cultural Center began in 2012 under the guidance of Gyalyum Tseyring Pem Wangchuck. Led by the Bhutan Foundation, the project was implemented in collaboration with the Department of Culture and Dzongkha Development of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The extensive restoration project received support from international donors, the U.S. Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation, and the Royal Government. Envisioned as a dynamic cultural institution, the museum will host educational programs, research initiatives, and exhibitions that celebrate Bhutanese history as a living tradition.
