On September 9, 2024, Queen Mathilde of Belgium attended a memorial ceremony on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the city of Liège at the national cemetery Enclos des Fusillés de la Citadelle (Field of Honor of the Executed). Liège was liberated by the British Second Army in September 1944. In 1946, a memorial was established to those who had been executed in the citadel during World Wars I and II.

This field of honor contains 419 graves of people who were killed by the Wehrmacht or Waffen-SS during World War II, as well as that of the chaplain of the Liège citadel, Mr. Canon Mathieu Voncken. The citadel was mainly used as a detention and execution site for patriots and members of the resistance during World War II.

I really like the textured fabric of the coat (though I think it makes the coat a bit bulky on Mathilde, and less so on a different figure), but what I really love is the shape of her hat.

A ceremony that was not planned in Queen Mathilde's agenda. At the last mininute she went to Liège instead of King Philippe who felt sick this morning. Queen Mathilde wore a coat dress that was new when Queen Elizabeth past away. I prefer the dress with a hat like on the last picture (on the left). Of course it was raining hard this morning, I guess, in a hurry she took the black hat that was protective enough against the rain.

I am glad that the Queen of Belgium is wearing tinted hose, the sign of a true lady,
    heat or no heat.

I think that "hose" with heat are for nuns, not for ladies.

Wearing stockings, pantyhose, tights, or whatever you want to call them, has nothing to do with being a lady. It is all about what is in style at any given time. Mathilde is in a more formal look for a memorial, which is perfectly fine. If she had choses to forgo the dark stockings, she would not be any less a lady.

Anon 21:41 is absolutely correct. Wearing them in the heat is for nuns. My great aunt, a nun, did until she died. She also wore a full length wool habit year round. She might have been more pleasant to be around if she had shed a few layers in the sweltering summer heat.

"Heat or no heat" ? It was maybe 15¨C yesterday morning and the rain was rather heavy. She was dressed for a memorial service. People were killed there by the nazi's. In the introduction above the pictures, you can read the number of graves which are there. As a queen she has to respect the protocol for commemoration ceremonies, which explain black coat dress, black tights, black hat, black accessories...

Virginia, depends on the occasion and the weather. When "ladies" wearing skin coloured stockings in hot weather, they look pretty ridiculous.

  8. A beautiful coat which is appropriate for the occasion if not flattering on Queen Mathilde. I prefer the pillbox hat she wore with the coat in the past. It seems to balance the overall look better on her. The smaller hats generally seem more flattering on her.

I certainly wouldn't suggest one for this setting but she's a rare royal who can carry off a baseball cap type hat. Small hats for Queen Mathilde!

Dear No Name 21:41, the late Queen always wore hose. As far as we are informed, she was not a nun. You certainly know that extremely sheer nylons exist, hardly visible, that improve the look of naked legs but you probably wanted to attack me.

Virginia, the Queen was in her 90's when she died. She was from a different time and was not going to change her ways at her advanced age. That is hardly a realistic example. You are comparing her to women 40 and 50 years younger than she was. Stockings are worn by older women who are too old to change their ways and have visible veins on their legs due to their age. They haven't been in style for well over a decade. No one wanted to attack you. On the contrary, it sounds like you are the one doing the attacking. If you feel better wearing stockings, whatever your age Virginia, go for it. What you aren't going to get away with is suggesting that women who don't wear them are any less a lady. Fashion evolves, as it should. You are on a fashion site, which would suggest you have some interest or understanding of fashion. You are free to be stuck in a period of time and dress the way you want to dress, but don't put others down, on a fashion blog, because they have moved on with the times. This is a personal issue you have.

She calls it nylons. I call it tights. Like said earlier for a commemoration of war victims protocol demands to wear black like for a funeral. Catholic people (especially nobility) are wearing black tights like queen Mathilde on funerals or commemorations for dead people.

Anon 12:57 Nylons, pantyhose or hose, stockings, and tights are all different names for the same thing, except in North America. In North America, tights are opaque and fall into a different category. Tights are the same thing little girls wear as well. Where there isn't a situation I would wear pantyhose, I would wear opaque tights with boots.

As a Catholic, I can assure you that there is no rule or protocol for a Catholic to wear hose/tights, black or otherwise, to mass, for a funeral or memorial anymore than it matters what type of dress shoe a lady wears.

You cannot compare the countries of Southern Europe with the countries of BeNeLux where the weather is completely different. This week the weather forecasts are not good. It is raining almost every day and it is much colder. Some days not warmer than 15 or 16 degrees C. For next week the weather should be again a bit warmer (20 degrees C) and no rain, according to the Royal meteorological institute.

Dear No Name 10.07, I understand that the British Royal family wears ultra sheer hose, nylons, whatever you wish to call them. I must be blind, I was never aware that its members are nuns but thank you for the valuable information.

The British Royal family is not a fashion icon, they usually dress a bit old fashioned and dowdy...
People in the nordic countries as Denmark dress better and Mary, aldo the Swedish royal family does not wear nylons.
Actually Mathilde only use tights under Very bad weather and and a memorial like this, not in summers as her daugters.

Princess Alice of Battenberg, great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria, mother of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, mother-in-law of Queen Elizabeth II, paternal grandmother of King Charles III, and great-grandmother of William, Prince of Wales, was a nun. Or I should say, she became a nun. In 1949, she created her own order, Christian Sisterhood of Martha and Mary. And she wore hose/tights. Everyday. Maybe they are still wearing them in tribute to her. ;) And you are welcome for the "valuable information".

Virginia, I am not sure why this is the hill you want to die on. It is just a matter of personal taste and preference. You should wear what makes you comfortable. It is not WRONG if others don't agree with you. We are not talking about steadfast rules that must be followed. The British royal family has a dress code for funerals, and it does vary by the royal. That does not mean it is the way it is done for everyone in all places in the world.

Queen Mathilde use tights in the Summer too, but only when she has to be dressed formal. Under a long evening gown and in golden sandals i.e. she is not using tights. During the day for a State visit when she has to be dressed formal too, she will wear transparant and very light tights during Summer. In her free time or at home or during vacations she probably doesn't wear tights at all. I've heard once (don't know if it is true) that Queen Mathilde's favorite outfit once she returns at home are a jeans and a pair of trainers and a sweater or T-shirt.

You can believe me she does wear the tights I described just above when she has to be dressed formal. These days there are tights that are so light they give the impression you are wearing no tights at all. In the 80-s I remember there were shiny tights. I have worn them and there are pictures of Queen Mathilde and Queen Maxima wearing them. I remember they were not comfortable at all. The lycra material was hard and cut in your skin. After work in the evening, I was always glad when I could take them off and wear jeans and pair of white socks, in my slippers.
