On September 22, 2024, Belgium's King Philippe and his daughter Princess Eléonore cycled through Mechelen to celebrate Car-Free Sunday. The event was held nationwide in many cities and towns across Belgium. The Car-Free Sunday event takes place each year during European Mobility Week, every third week of September. Mobility Week promotes behavioral change in favor of active mobility, public transport, and other clean, sustainable, and intelligent transport solutions.

Nice biking tour in the historical city of Mechelen. It is not the first time King Philippe went biking with one or two of his children on car free Sunday. This year it is only the youngest daughter Princess Eléonore who accompanies him. Of course the other children are not at home anymore. Studying abroad or at the Royal Military School (don't know when Prince Gabriel started with a special training of the RMS in France).

I wonder if it's compulsory in Belgium?
Nice to see father and daughter having some "down" time together.

Yes the helmet is compulsory in Belgium since several years. Don't know why they didn't had an helmet on all the time. There are older pictures of the Belgian royal family with a helmet on. when biking. More pictures of the biking tour in Mechelen by King Philippe and Princesse Léonore can be seen on other sites. These photo's are really the best touristic promotion Mechelen can have.

On the video film which was made in the centre of Mechelen one can see that King Philippe and Princess Eléonore were asked by the press to pose for the camera's. On that particular moment they didn't had their helmet's on. There are also pictures at the statue of Margharetha of Austria who was sent to The Netherlands (1507-1530) as a regent during the Habsburg reign in The Netherlands. (Belgium didn't exist as a separate country yet) . Other pictures with the Saint-Rombauts Cathedral in the background were also taken. King Philippe and Princess Eléonore were then asked by the security who biked together with them to continue their biking and probably they got the opportunity to put the helmets on at that particular moment. This shows that a couple of pictures don't reflect the real situation.

  11. How wonderful to see father and daughter participating. A healthy and advantageous pastime. In the first two photos, there is a real strong resemblance, they look so alike.
