On September 26, 2024, King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium welcomed His Holiness Pope Francis at Melsbroek Air Base, northeast of Brussels. After a brief welcome ceremony, Pope Francis traveled to the Apostolic Nunciature, where he will reside during his stay in Belgium. On the morning of Friday, September 27, Pope Francis will be received at the Castle of Laeken for a meeting with the Belgian King and Queen.

ReplyDeleteI don't wish to explain all the traditions of the church and queens. In the past according to different countries we have been able to read all kind of discussions and different opinions about that. The only thing I know is that Pope Francis is someone who is not impressed by all these old traditions. And it is not the visit of a queen to the Vatican, but the pope who is coming to Brussels.
DeleteThe only thing which is a bit unusual is that Queen Mathilde wears no coat although It was very bad weather in Belgium, it has been raining all night, strong wind and 9° C. King Philippe on the other hand is wearing an overcoat, which is a smart decision, I think.
I think the "privilège du blanc" is during an audience with the pope, as opposed to here when the pope leave sthe Vatican for a visit. Correct me if I'm wrong if anyone knows more.

DeleteThe pope landed at Melsbroek the military airport near Brussels. The 2 children who are introduced to the pope are probably children of someone of the official welcoming comittee.
I am not catholic. I don't care about catholic traditions. I am particuarly not fond of this pope. But one thing I know for sure the PR department of the Royal Belgium House will know what to wear and when to wear better than the random commenter on this blog.

Delete@ Queen Mathilde knows what to wear. It is not the first and the last time she meets the pope. If there is a PR dept of the BRF Belgian royal family, which I doubt, it is the official royal palace in Brussels in collaboration with the government, who is responsable for all the do's and don'ts. On the last picture (on the right) you see the prime minister Alexander de Croo and the minister of foreign affairs Mrs Lahib (black and white skirt) who represent the government.
