Today, on July 4, 2024, Queen Sonja turns 87 years old. Queen Sonja was born in Oslo on July 4, 1937, as the daughter of Dagny (1898-1994) and Karl August Haraldsen (1889-1959). When King Harald ascended to the throne upon the death of King Olav, Queen Sonja became Norway's first queen in 53 years. King Harald and Queen Sonja have two children, Princess Märtha Louise, born on September 22, 1971, and Crown Prince Haakon, born on July 20, 1973.

Amazing and beautiful lady, but with her husband’s poor health I wish in this century we would encourage all monarchs to retire and enjoy life a little. Her son is ready. LRB

Delete@ LRB Queen Sonja and the King are the only people who can judge this and decide what is the best for them and their family. I agree with Anonymous 11:23 : it is not up to anybody to give an opinion of what other people should do. There might always be a reason they decide one way and not the other way.
