I love Mathilde's dress. The style is perfect for her and the fabric print is typically African, which goes well with the recipient of the award. That was most thoughtful on her part. I also like the ensemble of the Tanzanian lady in the brown ensemble. Lovely jacket, trousers and necklace.

Queen Mathilde wore this dress last year when on state visit to South Africa. The dress is designed by Odile Jacobs, who made several African inspired dresses for Queen Mathilde.

Love Mathilde´s dress. Very well chosen for the occasion.

  5. J'aime beaucoup le style africain de cette robe mais je pense que sa ceinture est trop large ; en effet, elle remonte trop haut sous le buste de Mathilde !

  6. I really like the dress. And I think that the red shoes and purse work well with it.
I am however slightly distracted by the pattern not being horizontal in the skirt, which I think could be achieved by cutting and sewing it differently without changing the overall shape and silhouette of the skirt.

      @ Vanessa
If the pattern in the skirt was kept horizontal, the skirt of the dress would have looked bulky.

    2. There would have to be either darts along the waist running down the skirt or the fabric would have to be cut into panels that are then joined to form the skirt. Both sound like fun projects, I´d love to play with that pattern myself and see what results I would get.

The dress was appropriate for the occasion, however a change of colour for the bag/shoes would have been nice, for instance, cream colour, or navy. The earrings, a definite no (cheap looking).

Queen Mathilde wears the same accessories as last year when she wore the dress on State visit to South Africa. Red shoes Her handbag is very old, by the brand of "Furla", a brand that still exists and make handbags that are rather expensive.
I've seen it more than once and I wonder if the queen keeps her accessories on a shelf in the dressing room, in the neighborhood of the dress, so that she can wear them each time she wants to wear the dress again.

I think same,Edwina, but I think the style and colour of the earrings are a good choice.

  11. I'm afraid I am out of step here. I understand her reason for choosing this outfit, given the occasion and the designer but I don't think it's at all flattering. Not of Queen Mathilde's better looks imo

You are not alone. Have no idea what the readers think. Agree with you completely.

Thank you AnnieM. I am in agreement and appreciate the nod to South African fashion, but I just feel the dress is overwhelming, hard on the eye and not flattering to the Queen. A native scarf or cropped native jacket on a solid basic dress could have easily sufficed.

  12. Perfect choice by Queen Mathilde.
Nice touch of "Out Of Africa".
Congratulations to the organisation "Her Initiative" for having their work recognised.

To those who have bad comments on the African inspired dress of Queen Mathilde, I would like to add that the queen herself buys fabrics when she is in Congo or South Africa. There are pictures of her and king Philippe when they are choosing fabrics on a local market. Also an example of supporting the African women who are selling these fabrics. The designer Odile Jacobs who made these dresses for the queen did a wonderful job to make a dress and respecting the pattern at the same time.

  16. The pattern is strong, but this dress looks good. Love the red accessories. She looks very elegant.
