The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are making a three-day visit to Nigeria to promote the Invictus Games. On the 2nd day of their visit, the Duke and Duchess landed in Abuja on Friday morning after receiving an invitation from Nigeria's chief of defence staff, General Christopher Muse. During their three-day visit, the couple are meeting with injured service personnel and various officials.
On the evening of the 2nd day of their visit to Nigeria, the Duchess co-hosted an event of the initiative Women in Leadership with Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director General of the World Trade Organization. The event aimed to highlight the importance of female leadership and empowerment in driving positive change globally.
On Saturday morning, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex attended an event linked to the Invictus Games. At the event titled "Nigeria: Unconquered in Asokoro, Abuja", the couple were invited to watch a sitting volleyball game.
On Saturday afternoon, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex attended a special lunch with the country's chief of defence staff, General Christopher Musa, at the Nigerian Defence Headquarters in Abuja. The couple were guests of honor at the event.
All dresses of Meghan are amazing elegant. They are simple, with 2 ( red and black&white)of them having a swinging touch. And please can we stop saying hateful things in this blog about Meghan. This blog is about fashion and not a juicy gossip channel. There is more than enough polarisation already in this world.
ReplyDeleteOn point, thank you.
DeleteAgree!
DeleteMeghan is looking very beautiful in red.

ReplyDelete@Anon 15:20 - Spot on.
DeleteReally, apparently she did not understand or did not receive sufficient information about Nigeria. It's a rather conservative country where about half of the population is Muslim and the other half is Christian, divided in different churches like for example the Adventist church which certainly does not approve this kind of clothing (I'am referring especially to the black and white dress).
ReplyDelete@ Veerle
DeleteWhen people from another nationality come to my country, I do not approve always their kind of clothing or their way of conducting themselves either, but in a changing world we will be obliged more and more in the future to accept the differences between other nationalities and beliefs and the efforts to achieve this goal must come from both sides.
This clothing is lovely, the Duchess looks lovely, but my thought is exactly like your. It is more respectful to cover yourself more as a woman in these Muslim and conservative Christian places. You would think they would investigate the norms of places before appearing so ignorant about the culture. Not one other woman is so bare as she is in these photos. It is disrespectful and, I would think, husbands are not pleased to have their wives being a spectacle for other men. Both Sussexes should do a little serious studying before appearing in public events. It is a kind thing to do.
DeleteKH.
DeleteMy thoughts exactly. Pretty dresses but poor choices culturally given the skin exposure. That’s not a hate comment, dear Meghan supporters, but normal foreign guest etiquette. - Bob
DeleteI just red that 20% of the population in the UK is Muslim. Will you tell everyone in London to star covering themselves? Freedom of religion is also freedom from religious oppression.
DeleteTo bad Queen Elisabeth in 1956 didn't get that memo when she showed her bare arms, knees and shoulders. And they hadn't learned either when Di and Charles in 1989 went and she also showed up in bare arms and shoulders and not to mention made head turn with this dress. https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcT4jOXBFc3azPPkmGHOwfTnb4Q3sptZ1gwwjyukXx4ZAQ&s the criticism never ends do it?
DeleteDo they change their habits when they come visit America? No! They show their culture !
DeleteWell, the red dress is from a Nigerian designer, and they have other similar dresses too, so I guess that's not as big a problem as you want to make it. If they had visited a mosque, then she would surely have taken all the appropriate precautions. And don't forget that demanding a woman to cover herself (and I don't mean that you should run around totally naked) is an example of patriarchal oppression, from which millions of women are suffering around the world even today.
DeletePaula
A simple Google search shows Nigerian clothing styles for women. There are plenty of women wearing more modern dresses that are strapless and extremely form fitting. They are fashioned in gorgeous regional fabrics. I can't see that Nigeria is much unlike any other country with conservative and more modern dress. We see the divide every day on this blog. Stop assuming that little to no thought was put into this trip. This is how Harry was brought up. He knows how to travel abroad and Meghan was well-travelled before meeting Harry. It is not easy to take these criticisms seriously knowing that most of them are being done for sport. The reports I have seen coming out of Nigeria have been positive.
DeleteMegan's red dress is from a Nigerian brand, Oríré. The designer is Orire Aleshinloye, who holds a Masters in Fashion Business Creation from The British School of Fashion in London. She Nigerian and spent her childhood in the Republic of Benin. I think it is safe to say that a native Nigerian woman knows far better than the troublemakers on this blog what is appropriate and what is not.
DeleteFrom the brand website: Established in June 2021, Orire is a Contemporary fashion brand committed to exploring artistic femininity through distinct artisanal craftsmanship and conscious production.
Our manufacturing process prioritizes quality and we take pride in using sustainable fabrics, aiming to reduce harm through our production process. Most of our products are produced in small batches at our studio in Lagos, Nigeria while others are produced on a made-to-order basis to eliminate excess and allow flexibility to our customers by providing the option to customize fit.
Creativity, innovation, social and environmental responsibility sit equally in our brand ethos. Around the world, we work with entrepreneurs who share our values. The brand has developed quality relationships with its tailors and local fabric suppliers, and works to ensure that every team member who touches the clothing is treated respectfully with fair wages and working conditions.
Through responsible production, socially and environmentally growing practices, we are contributing to create a more transparent fashion industry.
Thank you so much Paula - true.

DeleteI agree with you.
Same thing in Europe which is plenty of African and Muslim immigrants.
We have to accept their habits too. Do you think they do an effort to integrate themselves in their new country ? No they ask that we are adapting our way of life to theirs.
Thanks @Anon 00:01 for the information on the fashion name Oríré and Oriré Aleshinloye.
DeleteNice to see Duchess Meghan supporting this young Nigerian fashion house.
There are a lot of highly talented fashion designers in Africa.
It’s a pity but they get very little exposure on the international fashion scene.
Princess Charlene of Monaco has used the well respected South African designer Terrence Bray on several occasions and has been a client to the luxury South African fashion house ERRE
Some African countries hold a “fashion week” based on the European model.
@anoymous 12/5/24 21:45 we sure do! to blend in, otherwise every one would look at us weird with our multi colored garments and head pieces. our clothes are not suitable for winter for starters
DeleteWhen is she ever appropriate in her dress?
DeleteThe black and white dress looks like the same silhouette/design as the gold dress Meghan wore in New York for an event. Perhaps same designer. I like it, except do not care for the cut-out area on the bodice (on both this dress and the gold one). I know middle parts are in style currently, but I think a side part for Meghan’s hair is much more flattering on her.
ReplyDelete-Royal Watcher
Especially like the red dress but I don’t understand her need to always dress so bare. Or change clothes for every single event. She did this in Germany as well. If it’s all about the charities, her clothes are distracting from their message.
ReplyDeleteAgree
DeleteIt is not difficult … different events need different clothes. A school trip vs meeting an important dignatory for lunch. It is called being respectful. LRB
DeletePlease, take a break... Or skip these posts altogether, if all you can say is criticize her.
DeletePaula
Paula, you only want to have ”yes sayers” around you?
Delete@19:04 Clearly you have no experience in this field. The difference is outfits marks each event as a separate entity. Harry also changed. Did you notice? Also in the heat a person will sweat through clothing very quickly.
DeleteA.
She chooses her dress to be noticed and make a statement. Unfortunately she usually makes the wrong statement.
DeleteChel
Anonymous 13/5/24 06:04: No, I don't want only "yes sayers" but I sure would like to read comments made without a hostile, biased, or prejudiced attitude. To allege that she "always dresses bare", when that's not simply true, to complain about the change of clothes during a trip like this but never seeing any problems with her sister-in-law's clothe changes, for instance. Come on, do you want her to dress like a nun? She is free to dress the way she wants. And it’s gorgeous choice, at least unexpected and not boring.
DeleteJ.

DeleteThe woman needs some shape wear under the red dress. A but lumpy looking without it.
ReplyDeleteIf she needs shape wear nobody else can wear such a dress without shape wear. She looks good and lost all the weight after her 2 children. One can see that she is training her muscles and she is known for eating healthy food. Look at Harry since he is married he is looking better than before and probably following a training program himself.
DeleteAnonymous12/5/24 18:56 She did need shapewear under the red dress. L
DeleteAlso the strapless white gown Anon 1650.
DeleteAnother ring?
ReplyDeletePip
She changed her engagement ring few years ago. It was better in 2017.
DeleteG
Why is everything strapless or showing so much skin? Just seems out of place
ReplyDeleteI agree with you
DeleteIt is a hot country.
DeleteAgree. This is not the best way to dress in hot climates. Much cooler to wear cotton or silk and cover the skin.
DeleteRight so when her late mother in law went to Nigeria with her then husband she didn't show skin...https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcT4jOXBFc3azPPkmGHOwfTnb4Q3sptZ1gwwjyukXx4ZAQ&s
DeleteWhy is she wearing a cross upside down?
ReplyDeleteMaybe you can speculate and start a lot of unfounded rumors.
DeleteOh yeah, @anon 23:10, that was a great proposal 😁.
Delete@ Anon. 12/5 17:36
DeleteShe doesn't. The cross is square just like the cross mark on your key board to make additions. At the cross there is attached a little ring like on any other pendant to pass the chain through. That is what is given you the impression of an upside down crucifix.
Her dresses are very pretty, and she looks really nice, but her choice of clothing for this particular visit is not appropriate at all. She looks dressed for a beach party. Can someone give her some much needed advice?
ReplyDeleteNice clothes, but not the black and white!
ReplyDeleteJohanna Ortiz a brand worn by Queen Letizia too. I think the black and white ethnic dress would look lovely on Queen Letizia to wear during her holidays.
ReplyDeleteI like the red dress, not keen on the bottom part. At least it is not sweeping the floor. Maybe a V neck would have been very nice. css
ReplyDeleteElle est très très belle
ReplyDeleteFroufrou
Last day: a yellow dress by Carolina Herrera of an outrageous £3.198 !!
ReplyDeleteWhy are you screaming about this. Meghan pays for her own clothes, and as a private person, she is completely free to make deals with designers. So what she paid, none of us knows. PS Kates bespoken clothes paid for by the people aren't any cheaper.
DeleteWhen is the last time you price tagged the dress of another royal?
DeleteA dress she wore when pregnant with her daughter. So she purchased a quality that's versatile. Smart shopping!
DeleteCinci
Anon 19.12, agree tone def.
Delete@ Anonymous 19:12
DeleteNot of your business how much she payed for her dress. Besides she probably doesn't pay the prices you can find online. She can conclude a deal or just hire a dress. There is a Belgian brand "Essentiel Antwerp" i.e. where you can hire a gala dress for a little amount. A lot of aristocratic ladies are using this service regularly. Maybe she just hires a dress too now and then.
Thanks a million @No name 19:12 for the information on the price of the Carolina Herrera dress.
DeleteCould you please find out …..
If the Duchess bought the dress?
Did she get a 50% or more discount?
Or was on loan from the fashion house?
Did she rent it?
Did the fashion house pay the Duchess to wear the dress?
Was it a gift from the fashion house?
Was it a gentleman’s (sorry gentlewoman’s) agreement with the fashion house that they would give a substantial donation to the Archewell foundation? (completely legal) Also known as a "scratch my back and I'll scratch yours" deal.
Was it just a freebie with no strings attached to it? (the deal, not the dress).
The rag trade is an international, multi-million dollar competitive business. Some people go so far as to say it’s a cut throat business.
Their sales/commercial people work hard and will go to no limit to get free publicity which would have otherwise cost megabucks.
Would greatly appreciate what you could find out. Thanks.
I think, it is an interesting information and in terms of cost per wear...
DeleteLisa
The tone def here seams to be 9:12 and 6:06.
DeleteLovely dresses, just not for these occasions.
ReplyDeleteAgree!
DeletePerfect for the occasion.
DeleteAll dresses are beautiful and my favourite is the red one. Zebra stripes are fun but I never see the point of keyholes.
ReplyDeleteI agree
ReplyDeleteI liked all of her dresses - and the handsome prince by her side.
ReplyDelete/AA 🇸🇪
Gorgeous, gorgeous and gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteYou people are so see through it ridiculous. In 1956 Elisabeth and Philip went to Nigeria. She used strapless dresses. In 1956! In 1989 Charles and Diana went to Nigeria also she showed her bare arms and shoulders. So give us a f break. Stop this nonsense.
ReplyDeleteAgree with you!
DeletePaula
I think the point is not so much skin showing with a sleeveless dress , but rather the garment looks like a slip. It is the style these days to wear slinky garments. Not everyone can wear these nor are fans of the current trend, but can look nice.
DeleteWho are "youpeople"? Persons with own opinions?
Delete3:53 the point is it's Meghan and everything she wears will always be wrong for some people. Guess what would have been said if Kate had worn the same dresses. You don't have to be a professor to figure that one out..
DeleteI believe the temperature in Nigeria today was 28c!So I can understand the choice of lightweight clothing.I’m just wondering if the black and white dress was too revealing! The slit up the front, nearly had her loosing her dignity,as seen on another site.
ReplyDeleteThe red dress is gorgeous.I love the movement of the base of the dress.
The white tube dress, again I know there are other options that would have been better suited. This looks like something you pull on at the beach.
The CH yellow dress is nice,it’s a beautiful shade of yellow. But it swaps her tiny frame.
As the saying goes,it wouldn’t do for us all to like the same thing. How boring that would make us all! Each to there own,is how it should be.
Lowri.
100% Agree.
DeleteThe Duke and Duchess were very welcome to Nigeria. It is boiling hot - Abuja and Lagos are typically 35 Degrees Celsius or higher this time of year. One also must consider the stifling humidity. Meghan’s outfits were pretty, appropriate and most importantly, comfortable for her. Harry did not skip a beat with his well suited lovely linen outfits.
ReplyDeleteThe Nigerian Veterans (the only African country) were delighted to participate in the last games. The main objective of the visit has produced a successful outcome; the updated news is that The Invictus Games 2029 will be in Nigeria.
I didn’t know that, what fantastic news for the wider Invictus family…LRB
DeleteDear @Anon 23:56
DeleteA pleasure to read your comment. Thank you.
She is stunning and stylish.
ReplyDeleteThe Duchess looks nice, but these dresses dont appeal to me, personal preference only. The cut out and the thin straps are a no for me as is the material where undergarments have a prominent outline.
ReplyDeleteWhy center one's personal preferences instead of an impersonal comment about the fashion. The WWD style of writing is discarded when this woman appears.
DeleteTrès élégante dans ces robes même si la rouge a ma préférence !
ReplyDeleteDear Achard62 (Tulipe).
DeleteDifficult choice but in the end my vote would go to the red dress also however I’d give an honorable mention for the Zebra “Out-of-Africa" dress.
p.s. A ‘thank you to Helen for such a superb lineup of photos.
Toutes ses robes sont élégantes et splendides de.quoi en rendre jalouses pour certaines qui n apprécient pas la Duchess Meghan
ReplyDeleteFroufrou
Beautiful outfits all, as usual, Megan's style is clean and modern.
ReplyDeleteI am always amazed when there are very strong comments on this column about what someone thinks is appropriate in which culture. For example, Nigeria is a country of dozens of different tribes, different religions and styles, where everyone dresses according to their own tastes and the cultures they represent. There is no one right way to dress. Some hide behind veils, others dress very revealingly. Every bodys style is accepted as it is. -Siri
I can only echo what many others have already said. Meghan's clothes are elegant and simple (in the good way). But that said, throughout this tour, she has shown too much skin. Yes, it's hot, but she could wear light fabrics with short sleeves. You do not see the other women around her showing their bare arms and shoulders. Her wardrobe would be fine if she was in a European country, for example, but not fitting for Nigeria where there is so much poverty and a conservative culture..
ReplyDeleteSophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, knows how to dress for such a tour -- royally, but suited to the country and culture.
Beverly24, perfectly stated imo 👏🏻👏🏻 — Jane
DeletePerfectly stated. And it is hard to make this point across without anyone calling you a hater.
DeleteT
You do realise we have photos of Q Elisabeth in Nigeria in 1956 with bare arms, bare shoulders, and showing more cleavage then Meghan? And we also have photos of Diana in Nigeria in 1990 doing the same. The nonsense we see when it comes to Meghan is pathetic.
DeleteAnonymous 15:49, you simply cannot compare evening wear to day wear. Both the late princess of Wales and the late Queen were properly attired during the day time, and similarly dressed to the ladies in their presence. Meghan here stands out with her lack of bring dressed for the occasion. But then again, since Harry and Meghan were not representing his majesty’s government and we are unfamiliar with private tours, so perhaps her dressing is suited. But you have to admit, her clothing have been way too revealing for a tour, even here in Europe.
DeleteT
Sorry, but speaking honestly anyone seeing Meghan in the red spaghetti-strap dress surrounded by beautifully but modestly dressed Nigerian women will have an impression of cringe-worthy sartorial tone-deafness on the part of the lady in red. As others have said: lovely dress, wrong occasion. Most of the duchess’s choices on this trip have been lovely on her but more appropriate for the Caribbean. The white cotton blouse worn with the blue Nigerian skirt was perfect.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you.
DeleteT
So sorry she couldn't dress accordingly, right?
