Japan's Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako hosted traditional spring garden party at Akasaka Imperial Garden. Princess Aiko, Crown Prince Akishino, Crown Princess Kiko, Princess Kako and other members of the imperial family attended the garden party. Princess Aiko made her first appearance at an Imperial garden party. Some 1,400 guests, including meritorious individuals from various fields, attended the spring garden party.
It is really striking in the first photo how many more adult females vs. adult males there are in the Imperial Family currently.

My thoughts exactly!
DeleteDes couleurs très douces chez les deux cousines dont rose pastel de la princesse Aiko et orange melon de la princesse Kako. Pas de réel changement au niveau des chaussures !
ReplyDeleteEven though there is nothing unusual here style-wise, the variety of pastel colours is very pleasing. And once again I’m impressed with Aiko’s poise and friendliness. (V.M.)
ReplyDelete@V.M. - I agree with your observation that Aiko looks quite poised and friendly.

Aiko has blossomed into a lovely young lady. She looks so happy and is so poised. Pretty pastel color on her. MR
DeleteThe suits are nice and the colours are okay. What is lacking is individuality. The garden party is a good idea;not much mingling;people don't look particularly relaxed.Did they have tea;cake and sandwiches? Perhaps a few of these family members need to go to a garden party in London;they are fun(Tara)
ReplyDeleteI totally agree. Whatever they do there is a total lack of or room for spontaneity. They always have to behave according to strict protocols. They are indeed, more than other royals living in a golden cage
DeleteDo you think the Japanese eat the same things than the British ?
DeleteFor tea they do not have to go to London. Maybe they served sushi and other raw fish with rice.
On the subject of refreshments, I too, am curious to know what is served at a Garden Party hosted by the Imperial family. Couldn't find anything in general online. Or perhaps there are no refreshments, just a 'meet and greet'?

I agree, the array of pastel colours and the interesting details here and there, are somehow fascinating and create a special atmosphere. Obviously, the colour scheme is not coincidence. I like the princess in bright blue but have forgotten her name.

DeleteSi je ne me trompe pas, il me semble que la princesse en bleu soutenu est Nobuko de Mikasa qui est membre de la famille impériale japonaise par alliance !
Princess Takamado.
DeleteBoring, all the ladies are dressed like grandmothers. Nothing modern
ReplyDeleteWhen are these comments on grandmothers are going to stop ? Actually grandmothers are not dressed this way. These are clothes that were fashion in the 50s and 60s. Grandmothers from the West they cannot wear these dresses and skirts and shoes anymore because they are not sold anymore in Europe. Up to date grandmothers are wearing jeans, sneakers, sweatshirts and parka's (since it is still cold in Europe). When necessary they wear a beautiful up to date dress in a bright color or trousers and coordinating top made of a beautiful fabric. They wear high heels or lower block heels according the dress or skirt and jacket that they wish to wear.
DeleteKako is such a charming young lady! It will be a loss for the family once she marries...
ReplyDeleteThe first time I see there is a difference in the shoes of certain imperial ladies.
ReplyDeleteCrown Princess Kiko (pics. 1, 2, 3) is wearing a better style of shoes. I also like her dress. She looks more elegant than the rest. The lady who is wearing the umbrella (Pic. N°4) her shoes are also different from the rest. The heels are thinner and there is a bow in the front. In pic. N° 7 there is a lady in the back with black shoes and higher heels and on pic. N° 8 one with a 2 pieces suit (jacket + skirt) with silvery shoes and a bow in the front.
Thank you DSC, Princess Takamado always manages to give her oufits a perky touch, despite the restrictions.

For anyone interested, the Imperial Agency (Kunaicho) now has an Instagram account that shows detailed picture of the food provided for the garden party. Fashion-wise, we clearly have a spring color coordination here, that works really well. The winner in my opinion is Princess Kako in light orange, and her hat is lovely.
