On February 9, 2024, Japanese Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako welcomed President William Ruto and First Lady Rachel Chebet Ruto at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. Princess Aiko and Crown Prince Akishino were also present at the court luncheon. During the meeting, Kenyan President William Ruto and Japanese Emperor Naruhito expressed joint commitment to tackling the challenges of climate change.
The First Lady of Kenia could have done with a little less frills around her shoulders, I think. Otherwise, this is a nice ensemble on her. Love to see Princess Aiko participating in this State Visit.
ReplyDeleteAm from Kenya, i wish our First lady would get fashion advice, this lace dress is over the top! The president on the other hand looks very smart.
DeleteAgree 100%
ReplyDeleteAgree with Anonymous 18.00. The First Lady looks awful in her lace dress. The Empress ,however, is very elegant in her kimono. Great outfit.
DeleteFirst steps into official duty for Princess Aiko, who graduated recently. This is one very understated look I think, both in color (white ? Off-white ? Light pink ?) and shape, but that is what it was meant to be I suppose. The pillbox hat is a success. She would have looked great in a silk kimono, as does Empress Masko here.

I like Empress choice of traditional wear, it says 'welcome to Japan'
ReplyDeleteNow, Aiko i almost did not recognise her! she looks like her beautiful cousins, so well groomed, a lady.
Yes I thought the same.
DeleteBeautiful kimono in a lovely pale green colour. Always nice to see the Emperor wearing a matching tie.
ReplyDeleteEmpress Masako looks so elegant! She has such beautiful smile.I would have loved for Princess Aiko to have worn kimono. Bea
ReplyDeleteEmpress Masako's kimono is so beautiful and she looks so perfectly elegant, serene and regal.
ReplyDeleteThe biggest surprise is Princess Aiko, who suddenly looks so mature and lady-like in these photos. The leap from slightly awkward teenager to stylish lady has been so quick and sudden. I wish that there had been an 'in-between' stage as a blossoming young adult, and maybe there is in their private time which we never see.
I wish Mrs. Ruto had worn something more traditional to Kenya instead of the frilly lace outfit, which to my eyes does not suit her well. Having lived in Kenya and in that part of the world myself for some years, I am familiar with the beautiful, colourful fabrics originating there, and the lovely styles used to wear them. Perhaps that is yet to come in the next days of the state visit.

I agree with your assessment. A frilly lace garment is not a good representation of the lady's country. The Empress has worn a traditional kimono, which is wonder, Mrs. Ruto should have reciprocated with a traditional garment.
DeleteAiko is such a lovely young woman, love her outfit and beautiful smile.
Empress Masako's kimono is beautiful. So elegant. Pss Aiko looks lovely, the single strand of pearls, finishes off her outfit nicely.
ReplyDeleteYes, the Empress is so elegant and beautiful in her traditional kimono. And her daughter has become a lovely young lady.
DeleteOnce again, a beautiful Kimono very elegant so is Pss Aiko, beautiful smile. Sadly, the First Lady of Kenya's dress has to many ruffles and a bit too tight. I think a strong color and an A line dress maybe would have made a difference; she has a nice smile. css
ReplyDeleteThe Empress looks lovely in her beautiful kimono--so elegant! I also love her hair style--its perfect for her. Aiko looks pretty in her suit and her pillbox-style hat is perfect for her. The First Lady of Kenya needs fewer ruffles--I think her dress would have been nice on her had the ruffles been omitted.

Both the Empress and Princess Aiko look outstanding.
ReplyDeletePrincess Aiko has grown into a beautiful young lady.
I won’t make a comment on the dress worn by the first lady as I don’t know enough about Kenyan, African culture, fashion, styles and traditions.
One thing that caught my eye amongst the photos, was the purity and simplicity of the dining table. Nothing ostentatious or showy, just a subtle touch of red to enhance the setting.
I wonder if this is the lunch table and a gala dinner will follow?
Off topic for one minute …… the President and his wife have been married for 33 years and have six children.
Dear Deadeggs, I liked the way you respectfully decided not to judge the dress of the first lady. Somehow I like it and it harmonises with the kimono of the empress.
ReplyDeleteLet is not forget that there is a great deal going on in the background prior to these state visits and conferences so that I assume the first lady did not wish to wear traditional dress, whatever the reason, possibly imperial protocol. This meeting has a subtle, quiet, even personal vibe, reflected in the colours of the participants.
