I understand the Empress doesn't wear a hat for these occasions because she's considered 'in her own house' as she is the Empress and it's the Imperial Residence, whereas the other ladies do because they're 'visiting' from their residences, but I'm curious of the protocol therefore that Aiko wears a hat. I assume although she is now working part-time, she is still living with her parents.

Kako's hat is a rare miss for me! Maybe with a different hairstyle but it just looks like a hat that slipped down the side of her head.

Aiko and Kiko are both in classic Japanese Imperial Family outfits, nice enough. I really like the dark blue on the Empress, very regal and flattering.

The blue velvet dress worn by the Empress is gorgeous and I love the pearl embroidery on the cuffs and collar.

Here, we have proof that the men only are written about with their wife's. William was solo on sunday at the BAFTA award, and King Harald became the oldest monarch in Europe on Wednesday when he turned 87. Neither was mentioned. Happy birthday to the emperor.

You must be new to this fashion blog otherwise you would have known that it's womens fashions and not men's fashions that the blog owner chooses to feature here, and she has been doing so for years. That's perfectly fine. Women's clothing are more varied. Mens fashions less so.

mens fashion is a constant, nothing to talk about, same color, pants and jacket

Yes this blog is about royal women’s fashion. Not sure whether there’s another that looks more to royal males, but they do tend to wear much more predictable fashion so less to discuss! - AnneLise

My comment came as a point to one who commented that Williams BAFTA was not written about in another post, but shouldn't we expect at least a Kings birthday being mentioned? She could find a photo with their wife like the emperor just to satisfy her policy. So I guess from now on we will not see a Christmas/new year speech being mentioned since we only have male rulers. Oh, I forgot except Albert who uses his wife as a prop 😉

I agree - both of the Empress's looks are gorgeous.
I'd love to see something more age appropriate on her daughter but I suspect that's unlikely to happen. (V.M.)

The fabric and colour of Princess Aiko's dress is beautiful. Wish we could see the full dress.
I love the colour of Empress Masako's gown...if only it didn't remind me of those velour nightgowns that were popular in the 80s and 90s. I believe she has worn this (or something very similar) before. She looks very regal, though.
I do like the cut and style of her suit. Another royal in winter white/cream.

They are in cream all the time. Nothing that can be compared with to day's European fashion.

The blue hat is nutty, looks odd, and is not typical of how a Japanese woman wears a hat. jj

I have seen the empress never better dressed than during this occasion. This wonderful velvet blue dress is so well tailored. Just perfect

Very nice color gown. The Empress looks stunning, so does Pss Aiko. The pearls on the ladies are exquisite. The cp couple look good too. At least some color dress on Pss Kako. It seems they have very strict rules for fashion for the Imperial ladies. css

  12. A lovely deep blue dress for the Empress. Princess Kako's blue dress is also a winner for me.

The Empress' gown is gorgeous! She looks fabulous--I know the Japanese court dress rules are very conservative but this gown would be a stunner anywhere because, while it is conservative, its style is timeless and ultra elegant. Aiko and Kiko look nice--I love me a pillbox hat and these 2 hats are perfect. The brooch Aiko is wearing is so pretty! My big disappointed is Kako--I do like the color of her dress as its very flattering on her but...her hat looks like the hatpins came loose and the hat is falling off her head and her dress is terribly ill-fitted. At least even this fashion mess does not dim her sparkle. Finally--Happy Birthday to Emperor Haruhito!
