The Princess Royal is making a three-day official visit to Sri Lanka. On January 10, 2024, the Princess Royal, accompanied by Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, arrived in Sri Lanka. On the first day of her visit, the Princess Royal attended a meeting with the President of Sri Lanka Ranil Wickremesinghe at President's House in Colombo. The Princess delivered a message from King Charles as a letter to President of Sri Lanka Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The Princess Royal is making this visit on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the beginning of diplomatic relations between the United Kingdom and Sri Lanka.
The cream coloured shawl and white (long) gloves (if necessary at all) don't go together. Not sure whether the PR's wearing a dress or a skirt with blouse, but in picture 1 it looks as if there's a red 'insert' which seems a totally different colour than the rest of her outfit. Gloves gone and it might look good ...
ReplyDeleteGloves...really?
ReplyDeleteYes, really. Old fashioned perhaps, but always elegant!
DeleteIf Anne was 100 years old, I could forgive her breech of modern etiquette. There is no excuse for her to wear gloves the way she does. At the very least, she should be removing her right glove when shaking hands. She is sending a message that she is "better than". She is also wearing evening gloves in daytime. I don't accept the germ excuse. We have hand sanitizer now. If all the queens of Europe, who outrank Anne, know their glove etiquette, I shouldn't think it would be too difficult for Anne to figure it out.
DeleteRubbish
DeleteDear Random Anonymous, gloves are no modern royal etiquette breach. There are many valid and protocol reasons to wear gloves ; we don’t know hers, but at 73 - and her being royal and us not being royal! - I imagine her choice to be the right one for her! (Grace)
Delete@Grace There is nothing about "modern ROYAL etiquette" in what I said. I said "modern etiquette". I stand by everything I wrote. Anne is not her mother. She is not grandfathered into the ways of generations past through the Queen or the Queen Mother. To not even remove her right glove to shake hands with the president sends a message that he is beneath her. I don't believe she thinks that, but that is the visual. How would she feel if everyone suddenly donned gloves when they approached her but no one else? On one hand she may like the fact that there is no actual contact, but I hope it would give her a taste of how it looks and feels to the person she won't touch without gloves. The germ aspect is real, and I would struggle with it myself. Today we have portable wipes and hand sanitizer. If germs are the reason, she can do better. The other royal ladies manage quite well and don't potentially offend anyone in the process. If she gloves up because the Queen did, that is a poor excuse. To continue the " royal" ways of the past would mean all the royal houses would still be marrying their cousins, for example. Times change and without modernizing within reason, the royals will fall out of favor.
DeleteRavie de voir Anne porter une robe colorée fleurie mais pourquoi des gants ainsi qu'une longue étole blancs ? A mon avis, cela n'apporte pas de l'élégance à son look !
ReplyDeleteLong gloves with a short dress ? White stola ? If she must wear a stola a red one adapted to her dress would have been nice. Replace the pair of white gloves by red short leather gloves. Her handbag looks lovely and new. I hope she wore red or cream shoes (we cannot see it on these pictures).
ReplyDeleteThe gloves...
ReplyDeleteMake this woman cut her hair!
ReplyDeleteHow rude
DeleteLet’s have some respect for a princess and an older woman.
DeleteYou don't automatically get respect just because you are a princess (or a prince). Respect is something that is earned by how one conducts themselves on a daily basis to those around them. Royals are no better than anyone else. They were born into, or married into, different families than the rest of us did. Anne's hair is not flattering, but I would not have been as blunt as Mimi.
DeleteHorrible hair and makeup
ReplyDeleteWhat is the problem with you?
DeleteWhy write comments like this about an older lady, a Princess, being horrible? It’s mean.
DeleteHmmm wondering are the ladies reacting because she is old as you say, since we read comments like this about the younger gard too without anyone reacting...should we talk about this about anyone? Of course not.
Delete08.29, which ladies? Could be gentlemen as well ;)
DeleteThat’s what I like about Princess Anne. She wears what is comfortable, fits and appropriate, plus rewears outfits. She doesnt care about what the latest fashion is, just get the job done. She wears gloves which is smart, who knows where those other hands have been. I agree she could have worn short red gloves, and yes her hair could be nicer. But again she keeps it long, pulls it into a ponytail and tucks in the ends. No need for a stylist to travel with her. Most of all I love that she always wears lipstick to brighten her face, thats all she needs.
ReplyDeleteDisgusting remark of you: "She wears gloves which is smart, who knows where those other hands have been". The president could have been of the same opinion.
DeleteIt’s not a disgusting remark!, it’s just a turn of phrase. It’s not about the other people per se.
DeleteGloves so old fashioned on many occasions unless you don't want to touch real flesh and blood
ReplyDeleteHer mother did the same. When you will be shaking hands with many people, it keeps your hands cleaner.
DeleteTaste and style simply look different. Nothing fits together.
ReplyDeleteAnd that hair. Why does she remain so attached to her sartorial past? She doesn't have to be dressed up, but you should expect a bit more chic. Too bad. Frieda
Her mom never changed her hair style either.
DeleteThe late Queen Elizabeth's hair was always well looked after. Her hair was done in the style queens liked in those days : Queen Elizabeth, Queen Fabiola, Queen Beatrix had all more or less the same style, but done by professional hairdressers. Their hair did not look like straw, it was short, shiny, in good condition, more or less voluminous to be able to wear a tiara if necessary.
DeleteQueen Elizabeth was better dressed than her daughter too. She never wore strange combinations. Always her coat, dress, hat, handbag and gloves. Sometimes a two pieces outfit + hat + handbag and gloves. Always in coordinated colors. Her gala dresses were classics too + tiara + little purse + gloves. That was the chic style of the 50-ees and 60-ees. Princess Anne tries to imitate that but she does it all wrong. There are beautiful classic outfits for ladies these days, but Anne prefers to wear her old outfits again and again. I hope her daughter Zara will not imitate her mother when she gets older. Until know I think she does not dress too bad, she has a beautiful skin and face and her make-up is always done softly. She has beautiful and healthy hair. Well done Zara.
Nessuna può aiutarla a vestirsi adeguatamente?
ReplyDeleteRossella
I wouldn't wear the gloves personally, too hot in this climate, but this is how she learnt to dress as a young Princess. Queen Elizabeth also always wore gloves, she obviously taught her daughter and Anne has stuck to it...
ReplyDeleteThe dress is a nice colour and I like what I can see of it. Not certain about the purpose of the white scarf given that she's in warmer climes.. I do like gloves generally but not a great fan of these ones. As to her hair--it suits her, I think, it's not a lot of hassle and she likes it, so where's the problem. If you look at European Queens who are only slightly older than the Princess Royal you will see the same faithfulness to styles they have had for years--Princess Beatrix and Queen Margrethe to name but two.
ReplyDelete“She likes it”’… yes! … and we should hardly be advising her from changing what she likes unless she asks! It makes me laugh (and sometimes feel sad) how many people would like to upgrade her, but how would they feel if she came and told them they look bad and must change?!
DeleteThe actual dress from what I can see looks nice. She has her own style, hence the reason for the gloves, I believe. I personally love gloves, but not these ones. Not sure about the white scarf either.
ReplyDeleteThe 3 strand pearl necklace looks beautiful, the perfect length. The pearl earrings are a good size and nice accompaniment. Pearl necklaces are so elegant.
Nice dress. The shawl covers up so I would like to see the whole dress. I do must say Anne wears gloves everywhere just like her mother the late Q did. Wonder if she carries an extra pair if the one wearing at present get dirty? css
ReplyDeleteThe Princess Royal does not give a flying crap about anyone's opinion,, she could rip your arm out of the socket, beat you with it and go right back to shaing hands. She is the original Bada$$. I love her!
ReplyDeleteThis is hilarious! Well said :-) - AnneLise
DeleteThe Princess Royal is lovely, elegant lady. I love her dress--the fabric is gorgeous. I'm very surprised at some of the comments about her gloves and hair. Some of the remarks are rude and mean. The Princess has never been one to follow fashion--she does as she pleases. If she likes her hairstyle, so be it. Her hair, her choice. She is a no muss, no fuss person and keeping a simple style that she can quickly do herself is most likely why she keeps this style. As for her choice of gloves--she was raised to wear gloves as part of her appearance when representing Crown and Country. So, she continues a tradition of a lifetime. I really cannot understand why her gloves are being discussed other than they are rather long for daywear.
ReplyDeleteJanet
Anne was very fashionable when she was younger. She had a modern hair style as well. Then one day it all stopped. I'll bet you she still has those clothes from the 60s and can still fit into them!
DeleteAnne is such a unique royal;she cuts through all the rubbish,She has style grace and poise. Her outfit is great;the pearls are beautiful, and the gloves are so lady like.(Tara)
ReplyDeleteShe might be hard working, but she has no style. Nor do her 10 ladies in waiting, apparently. Maybe the new addition, being much younger, can influence her.
ReplyDeleteCH
About the scarf and other "peculiar details": I'm pretty sure that during an official visit the program includes more than one visit during one day. This most often means that you have to consider what to wear so that you are appropriately dressed in each place you visit. In Muslim countries there are places where ladies have to cover their hair. Perhaps the white scarf was for such a visit? (No time to change clothing during the day). 3/4 length gloves are not "long" and are quite ok to wear daytime.
ReplyDeleteI'm also sure that princess Anne (and her staff) knows the international upper class protocol much better than most of the commentators. In those circles protocol is more important than fashion or style.
Margot
@Margot
DeleteYou forget one thing that we have eyes to look how other princesses and queens are dressed and follow protocol. They also wear gloves but other ones than P Anne. They also wear stola's or pashmina's but on other occasions than P Anne. They also wear sun glasses if on state visit in a hot country but other ones than P. Anne. When I see pictures or video's of gala's or wedding banquets where the international upper class is present, I can see how the royal ladies are dressed. They are fashionable, stylish and very beautiful in their gala dresses. Their hair is beautifully styled to be able to wear a tiara. Their hands are showing the jewelry that they wear on such occasions and their nails are manicured and colored in soft pink or silver tones. Their make-up is done by make-up artists. And I can tell you more and more of everything I see on those pictures and video's.......
So, don't tell the commentators that they don't know how it is in those circles because they have eyes and see those pictures and video's too.
Dear Margot, yes of course an experienced princess like Anne knows protocol far better than we can - and for me too, it is strange and quite funny to read here the comments by others demanding she do differently! She’s always very neat and well groomed, and she has no need to follow the fashion of the day, to adapt her hairstyle to the preferences of Royal watches, or to paint her nails. I do not know why so many wish her to be someone she’s not! - Grace
DeleteThe Princess Royal, Anne is lovely, engaged and totally at ease with her duties. Edwina
ReplyDeleteNice color on Anne and the scarf/shawl is a nice touch.
