As part of their New Year activities, on January 23, 2024, King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium held the annual New Year's reception for the heads of the European institutions based in Brussels, and the permanent representatives accredited to the European Union. The reception took place at the Castle of Laeken.
I like the color of Mathilda’s dress; however, in some of the photos it looks like it’s bunching up too much and the front top part looks too heavy to me compared to the more open back.

Agree with you about the beautiful royal blue colour of this dress. But, the top part looks like the tailor had extra fabric and instead of smoothing it out, he/she just left it to drape over the bustline. It looks very odd, messy and unflattering.
DeleteTotally agree Anonymous 23/01/24 14:41
DeleteLove the colour, but I don't feel this is the best model/fit for QM: in the front it looks a bit 'messy'
ReplyDeleteI like the front with the wide sleeves made into a draping frontline. I don´t find it messy. It is an excellent work of tailoring. I would have liked the back higher but that is a minor quibble.
DeleteAgree with you Ladyofthemanor.
DeleteMy only hesitation is the back.
I’d prefer a simple, no fuss back.
They make such a handsome couple..
Such an elegant lady, she seldom disappoints.
ReplyDeleteWow gorgeous in every way
ReplyDeleteHm hm, irgendwie ist da zuviel Stoff im vorderen Oberteil - und im oberen Rücken ein bisschen zu wenig. Aber die Farbe steht der Königin gut.
ReplyDeleteSabsi
Sehe ich ganz ähnlich, die Farbe immerhin is gut. anna e.
DeleteI love it. Queen Mathilde shows one more time that she dares to wear something extraordinary. She is also wearing very high heels, which she is doing only occasionally. The color suits her very well. She wore that dress already in October last year for a reception with all the Belgian mayors.
ReplyDeleteI also love the blue stones in her earrings by Percosi Pappi matching 2 or 3 blue stones in her bracelets.
Receptions continue to take place in the Castle of Laken as the renovation works at the Royal Palace in Brussels aren't finished yet.
On Thursday this week there will be a reception for the personnel of NATO who is stationed in Brussels.
It's a nice dress. It would have been nice if his tie coordinated with i.
ReplyDeleteColor - yes, dress cut - no! The fabric ugly shrinks in the chest area and in the hip area.
ReplyDeleteStephanie
Ugly is rather harsh I would say - bad-looking, deformed, unbeautiful, unlovely, there are many more gracious words to use..
DeleteTO anon 18:00 English is not my native language, so sometimes I don't use the most appropriate word. But I hope I am expressing myself clearly. Stephanie
DeleteThank you for writing in English Stephanie and I think that you write well.
DeleteI would be interested in reading what Acharz62 writes every day but I only understand a few French words.
Well done on your command of English, Stephanie. I sometimes go to reply to French comments in that language but chicken out in case I make silly mistakes
DeleteTrès belle couleur lumineuse de cette robe mais à première vue, je trouve que le tissu semble trop lourd ; plus de fluidité aurait amélioré le look de Mathilde !
ReplyDeleteGorgeous, gorgeous color but the neckline is a big no.
ReplyDeleteMost of the comments show that the people on this blog are not in for new ideas in the matter of fashion. Only a few exceptions love this new style of Queen Mathilde's dress. At least one cannot say Queen Mathilde looks boring.
ReplyDeleteIt's not so much we are not into new ideas. It's more that the design of the dress is not pleasing to our eyes. We don't find it attractive. New is not necessarily progressive or good. And yes, it is interesting to see these avant garde clothes being worn. Not boring at all.
DeleteI saw this afternoon a picture of Princess Eugenie in the magazine "Beau Monde". From what I could see on the picture, she wore a turquoise silk dress with more or less the same draping in the front as on Queen Mathilde's dress. I like it better on Queen Mathilde than on Princess Eugenie. In the article was written that Princess Eugenie decided to wear from now on only the creations made by Fendi. In another picture she was dressed in a black dress underneath a black coat and on her feet she wore black stiletto's with very high heels. She was a real beauty dressed like that.
DeleteThe color is lovely, yet the bunching fabric ruins the garment. The Queen appears to notice how it is bunching as she walks, too bad, it could have been a terrific outfit. Clare
ReplyDeleteGreat color for Mathilde. The style is quite different, but I like it and think it looks good on her. Nicely styled hair.
ReplyDeleteLady M
Love the matching earrings!
ReplyDeleteFantastic color, very nice look for Mathilde today. css
ReplyDeleteI love the unusual way the dress is made, elegance with a bit of whimsy. The color is very rich and regal! FITZHUGH
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm glad to see that Queen Mathilde is keeping the zip at the back of the dress and not copying Camilla’s revolutionary, new royal look with the zip in the front.😁
DeleteI like the idea for this dress, but the execution is a fail Imo. The cut or design, to suit the Queen, something is off. The bodice doesn't sit right. Regardless she looks really lovely. The color is beautiful, love the black accessories and her blue stone earrings.
ReplyDeleteNathan strikes again? I love the color, and I don't mind the stuff draped bodice, but I don't like the low back. It seems unbalanced.
ReplyDeleteI do appreciate the efforts of the Queen to wear interesting fashion.
I love the regal impression the color offers; however, I am not a fan of the style of the dress. It does not flatter the Queen at all. But the shoes do. They are awesome.
ReplyDeleteLike others have mentioned, the colour is beautiful and suits QM well. The front of the dress has me wanting to tuck in the flap.A simple boatneck would have looked better. Bea
ReplyDeleteColour is fantastic, style, cut, shape of dress is not flattering in that there is, as others have stated, too much fabric in the wrong places. Hard to believe QM is the same age as DoE Sophie. Edwina
ReplyDeleteSophie, DoE, is age 59; QM is age 51. I'm not sure what point you were trying to make in regard to their age.
DeleteWell, she is not. Queen Mathilde just turned 51 while the DoE turned 59 the other week.
DeleteQueen Mathilde is not the same age as Sophie. Sophie is 59 & Mathilde is 51.
DeletePerhaps Edwina meant age group. 'DoE may seem younger compared to QM'
DeleteSuperbe couleur mais je n aime pas le dos
ReplyDeleteFroufrou
lovely colour of dress and I like the view from the back but the front, to me, is just clumsy and untidy. Nothing to do with liking or disliking new styles. It looks neither elegant nor flattering.
ReplyDeleteI remember the picture when Queen Mathilde and other queens and crown princesses were invited by Queen Camilla for afternoon tea. I think it took place not long after the funeral of Queen Elizabeth. Queen Mathilde was really impressive on that picture. She was wearing a cream dress and was the tallest lady of all the participants.
ReplyDeleteIf a little lady wore the same blue dress I would probably made the same comments as you do, but Queen Mathilde with her length can really have the style of this dress. To me she looks elegant as always.
