  1. Everyone looks lovely! But I'm so excited about the Strathmore Rose Tiara! I've seen pictures of Queen (Mum) Elizabeth wearing it in her youth, but it hasn't been seen for so long, and I read it was too delicate to wear. So glad Catherine is wearing it again. I hope we see more of it in the future!

The First Lady of Korean is gorgeous.

    2. Agree that it is wonderful to see the Strathmore Rose tiara! It was given to the late Queen Mother in 1923 so it is 100 years old! Glad that the rumors about it’s fragility and possible disappearance were false. It’s either been refurbished or just waiting for the right moment to reappear.

  2. Would you look at the ruby sparklers on Q. Camilla!! WOW!! And POW Kate has a new tiara!! So pretty!! But the best dressed for me is the young lady in the seafoam green sparkly dress with cape. Very pretty.

  3. Does anyone know why they almost always wear white to state banquets? Look at older pictures too. It's always white.(almost ) surprising that the queen wore dark red although a very pretty dress for her.

    3. Because white goes well with the colourful sashes and orders. They don't have to wear white though, therefore it is fine for Camilla to wear red or any other colour.

  4. Queen Camilla is the winner tonight by a country mile! Gorgeous dress, great colour and a perfect fit for her plus the amazing ruby jewellery. The blue dress worn by one of the girl singers would be my next choice. The First Lady's dress is simple and elegant and I like what I can see of the blue dress worn by the Duchess of Gloucester.

Then , oh dear! The trio in white. I like the neck detail of Duchess Sophie's dress but in the full length photo it doesn't seem to be a flattering fit. Princess Anne's dress could have been okay without the bolero jacket but it looks matronly. The Princess of Wales' dress just might have been okay without the evening gloves but with the gloves it looks weird.

In spite of the comments above, everyone looks good and it is wonderful to see the trappings of a full blown state banquet with incredible jewellery and tiaras. Lovely

Ok, ok, if I must look at the fashion, then Princess Kate wins for best tiara-to-wearer moment.

  8. Oh my stars!!! Absolutely fabulous--love seeing QC digging into the jewel vault again! She is stunning in her red gown and rubies. How wonderful to see the gorgeous Princess of Wales in a new tiara--the Strathmore is lovely on her. I do wish she had chosen something other than a white gown with embellishments as it is very similar to another she owns as well as her coronation gown. Still she is looking beautiful here. The Princess Royal is quite elegant and her diamonds are sparkling away. I love the Duchess of Gloucester's blue gown--so pretty and she looks wonderful and I saw on another site she is wearing her emeralds--from her husband and her mother-in-law, Princess Alice. She too is looking lovely. Two things about the Duchess of Edinburgh--1) I was hoping for something other than a repeat of her coronation gown as I not a big fan of it in May and tonight isn't changing my mind--I think its the neckline; 2) I was hoping QC would loan Sophie another tiara as it would be nice to see Sophie have a chance to wear something other than her patched together wedding tiara and her aquamarine tiaras--maybe another time. Her aquamarine tiara is very pretty but I'd love to see her in something else. The Korean First Lady is fabulous in her black gown with the crystal embellishments. The singers from the K-pop group Blackpink look very pretty--I especially like the pale blue/seafoam green (not really sure of the color). The Prime Minister's wife is looking pretty in her red gown.

  11. So much excellent detail here, but above all I think Camilla and Charles are looking very sparkly indeed; her dress is perfection. I love that we have red, white and blue for the dresses of the British Royal ladies. But I’m a bit confused over the many different sashes, and above all, the varied angles they’re being worn - can anyone educate us on this ? - AnneLise

    1. Sashes or ribands are orders of honour that are presented to the wearers. Orders of the Thistle and Garter are worn off the left shoulder; other orders are worn off the right shoulder. For men, the riband can be a long version worn from the shoulder either over or under a coat, or a short version worn off the shoulder and usually under a coat. For white tie, the short version is usually worn, as both Charles and the Korean president are wearing.

  12. Love Queen Camilla's look tonight, red really suits her and the cut and fabric of the dress are beautiful. The South Korean First Lady looks equally stylish in her black dress. PoW looks lovely, understated, not sure of the make-up and hair, both appear a bit underdone IMHO

  13. I thought Her Majesty looked very good - the gown and jewels suited her very well. (She has just the perfect shaped head for a large tiara - lucky her!)
I am in two minds about the Princess of Wales, though. I know capes and capelets are very in, but this reminded me too much of her coronation dress, which is still of recent memory. However, I DO appreciate the detail - such as the embroidery perfectly matching the stylized rose and branches motif of the Strathmore. Albeit, I would have preferred the embroidery to be in platinum, as even though the Strathmore is mounted in gold, it reads as more platinum from afar.
On the subject of the Strathmore - I do so WISH she had worn it across the forehead ( á la Her Late Majesty the Queen Mother); that would have taken the look from lovely to stupendous! And while we are in diamond territory - the earrings don't work for me. I have adored them on other occasions, don't get me wrong, but their design is too closed when compared to the airy Strathmore. She should have chosen something with more negative space between the diamonds - a match in visual "weight" if you will - these are too heavy.
All that being said - I am just nitpicking (after all, that's what we do here, and we love it) - the POW was perfectly lovely - a credit to her husband and her nation!
The delightful Duchess of Edinburgh's look was a little mumsy for me - I think the cut did not flatter her shape, albeit the fabric was lovely.
I thought the First Lady of South Korea's look was a hit - good shape to bulk out her tiny frame, and just the perfect amount of blingy detail. Lovely.

  15. What a marvellous night: beautiful gowns, fantastic tiaras! Catherine looks lovely in this dress, her new tiara suits her. Just wish she'd worn her hair in an updo. Camilla looks very regal in this dress: gorgeous colour on her and her jewellery suits her: not many women are able to wear this much without it looking over the top. I'm already looking forward to a state banquet with Queen Silvia someday, fingers crossed that might happen one day :-)
On Sophie: for me this dress is not made to wear with a tiara. I wish we had a closer look of princess Anne. White was the colour of the night for the British royal ladies apparently. The South Korean first lady looks wonderful in her black dress with glittering accents. Very elegant. Damsel Dragonfly

  16. Apart from the fact that I am not a fan of the (embroidered) short cape sleeves of the evening dress, I think the long gloves clash with it. The small part of the upper arm that is visible looks strange. The order sign that hangs partly over the embroidery also does not look nice. All in all, I think it's a drawling picture, while the PoW often looks spectacular in evening wear..

QC looks good, but the necklace is a tiny bit too long. DoE's looks nice as well, but why the elastic band at the end of the sleeves?

  17. Which stylist is telling Queen Camilla and lately more and more Princess Catherine that they must wear big square shoulder pads under their dress ? Camilla should avoid velvet it does not suit her, Catherine a beautiful dress ruined by the shoulder pads. I like the dress of the president's wife. Maybe in another color than black, but it looks to have a beautiful shape. Also the Duchess of Gloucester has a beautiful dress, simple cut but very lovely. Her hair has always a good length and with a little tiara, it looks elegant. Duchess Sophie's dress looks like a beautiful white night gown. I'd change the neckline which is too high and the sleeves into straight ones. Concerning the other dresses shown here I can only say they are nothing special. I am also wondering why most of the royal ladies are wearing white or cream ? It looks like there are not briefed about each other choices. And then the tiara's and other jewelry, some are beautiful, some are overdone. I prefer a beautiful dress and a few gorgeous pieces of jewelry than what I see here. Besides in some countries when a president and his lady are the guests, the royal ladies of the inviting country do not wear their tiara's because the president's wife does not have one.

    1. First, I do not know about British tiaras, but in Scandinavian monarchies the royal tiaras have an order of importance. This means that a tiara for state events is chosen according to protocol. Then there can be statements eg. that the tiara n:r 1 is not allowed to be taken abroad. The most important tiara in Sweden is the Braganza, in Norway the one with square emeralds and lots of diamonds dating about 1800.

    1. Maybe they look terrific, but to me they are looking very old for their age (my age too) especially King Charles. Each time I see him when on state or official visit or when a country is invited in the U.K., he looks older and older. It also occurred to me that they are so little compared to Princess Catherine (Pictures 14 & 15). In general the Asiatic people are shorter than the Europeans. But here the President and also his wife are taller than K Charles. I wonder how long he will be able to continue to be a king. It must not be easy at his age.

    2. @Anon 15:33 You mentioned about King Charles and Camilla looking old for their age.
My thoughts are for Camilla having to take on such a job at her age.
Most women of her age have already enjoyed perhaps 10 years of retirement.
She stated after her marriage to Charles that she didn’t wish to be Queen and just to remain a Princess or Duchess of something or other.
Plus she is still handicapped with her popularity rating which is very mediocre and mustn't be good for her morale.
I hope they both have good health and the force to carry on with a difficult job.

-Dorothe-

The wife of the Korean leader had a odd combination in her gown, not all the appealing. Too bad she has had work done on her face. Aging gracefully, is more appealing then trying to look younger and failing.
