In the week of World Sight Day 2023, the Duchess of Edinburgh, Global Ambassador for the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), visited Ethiopia to support the transformative work that has been carried out by the international eye care charity Orbis. As part of her visit, the Duchess of Edinburgh attended a conference about historic trachoma elimination in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The Duchess visited the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at Hawassa University. There, she met with health workers screening for and treating blinding trachoma at a primary eye care unit, and received information about the challenges people face, which can lead to trachoma, including limited access to clean water and sanitation.
The Duchess of Edinburgh also met with the community of Commonwealth nations in Addis Ababa, and spoke with them about shared interests in the Commonwealth agenda and next Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (Apia, Samoa). The Duchess also met with a dedicated array of Ambassadors to mark the 23rd anniversary of UNSC Resolution 1325.
On Thursday, the Duchess of Edinburgh attended various events in Addis Ababa held on the occasion of World Sight Day 2023. This year's theme aims to focus the world’s attention on the importance of eye care in the workplace, and to encourage employers to make eye health initiatives standard practice.
ReplyDeleteShe’s doing marvellous work and I wish the media would highlight her more. I had hoped she would have a higher profile after becoming a Duchess but the press really are selective on who they cover.
ReplyDeleteHer dresses are all wonderful on her and suit the engagements well.
Does anyone know the significance of the scarf being worn at the engagement at the college?
I couldn't find anything specific about it, what a pity. Whatever it (or the pattern) may stand for, it is probably a local hand-woven scarf. - She looks wonderful in the Beulah dress. All the others are very good "working horses" for her work there, not too elegant, but dress enough, so to speak, to honor her hosts. Except the Max Mara one, it should have been left at home or better: not be purchased at all. (GM)
DeleteI agree with you Wendy.
DeleteA year or so ago Sophie and Edward visited The Caribbean.
I was disappointed that Hello magazine didn't print a single photo.
Likewise, princess Anne doesn't receive the media coverage that she deserves.
I always loved the beulah dress, wonderful colour and good fit. anna e.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Sophie looked completely stunning in that orange dress. She looks amazing overall in fact-Jacqueline
DeleteThe orange dress is my favorite, but all have positive points.
ReplyDeleteJust beautiful.
ReplyDeleteCette Duchesse est lumineuse elle rayonne de bonté
ReplyDeleteFroufrou
This is the t
ReplyDeleteThe orange (coral-red ?) dress is very beautiful on Duchess Sophie. A pity she wears her clothes too long. If you look at the model the proportions are O.K. On Sophie the proportions (her length and the length of the dress) are not O.K.
ReplyDeleteI don't like any of the other dresses especially the Max Mara dress. Usually this is a brand I like, this time however the dress is really ugly. Rose
Gosh, 4 lovely dresses that are all within the Duchesses' preferred style profile. I like them all - petal sleeves, uneven hems and patchwork design included. They are light, bright and colourful, and perfectly synchronised to the area of the world where she is right now (climate and temperature) and the work she is doing there. Very nice.

On this trip the Duchess wears one long row of long-sleeved midi/maxi dresses. From this post I've the salmon coloured Beulah dress. It is well fitted and a color that is becoming.
ReplyDeleteThe belted Max Mara is dull and boring. Not sure about the ME+EM dress. Somehow I don't think it suits her. It looks too big.
The last dress is fun and I like the pastel colors.
The Duchess looks lovely and I’m a big fan of all her dress choices. She works hard for the royal family. MR
ReplyDeleteAll are pretty dresses. I wish they were shortened a few inches, but if you don’t wear stocking, or want to hide stubble on legs this is a good length.
ReplyDeleteFirst and most important point, congratulations to the Duchess for her commitment and work for this cause.
ReplyDeleteSecondly, the Duchess has well chosen her outfits for a visit to Ethiopia.
My favourite is the Zimmermann creation but as @MaryT said, each has its positive points.
And thirdly, if you’ll permit me with a little bit of light humour, photos N°8, the three ladies standing together, is an example for our next sewing class of how hemlines can be. That is, an example of short, medium and long hemlines.
Dear @ Deadeggs, I entirely agree with you.
DeleteYour humorous remarks about the hem lengths Is so true (I had noticed the increasing lenghts too).
Well worth event. She is doing a great job with this cause. Eyesight is extremely important. I she looks stunning. I love this coral dress. css
ReplyDeleteLovely coral coloured dress. The colour really suits the Duchess. Taking it for granted that all the dresses are inevitably very long, the Me+Em and Zimmerman dresses are both pleasant enough. The Max Mara one has no redeeming features that I can see.

This has been a wonderful tour by the Duchess, fantastic work. She looks lovely in all these pretty dresses. She is such a great asset to the Monarchy. Quietly gets on with the job, little fuss and fanfare and has done for a very long time. I think she is fabulous.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you 100% about Sophie being a very valuable asset for the BRF. I am sure King Charles is very grateful to his sister-in-law for her quiet dedication and service. She is indeed fabulous! Janet
DeleteIn agreeme t with you, @Ava.

Sorry, @Ava, my previous comment went in too early.
DeleteIt's from me.
In agreement with you 👋
Four perfect dresses for Sophie as well as for her visit to Ethiopia. Each dress here has its good points and all very much suit the seriousness of her trip and the events she is attending. I love the coral Beulah dress and think Sophie looks absolutely lovely in it.
ReplyDeleteJanet
Of the four dresses for me the Beulah dress is the winner: the colour enhances her blond hair and light skin.
ReplyDeleteAs does the last one: fairytale style.
From the other two dresses the patterns and colours are a no for me.
Mabel
Fistly, kudos to the Duchess for such a precious work.
ReplyDeleteOn the fashion front, sorry, but I like only the orange- red dress.
The first pic is wonderful and the others are beautiful too.
I like the contrast orange dress/ blonde hair, very nice and attractive.
The Duchess is splendid ,a true gem inside the RF.
ReplyDeleteSophie looks amazing in those colors. If she shortened the dress by 20 cm, it would be perfect.
