GD Maria Teresa is dressed appropriately to assist at this funeral. She is probably in France were they have a villa and were the Grand Ducal Family is passing a vacation like they do every year.

  2. Firstly, a sad loss for France to lose such a great lady of
    culture
She has left behind an impressive contribution to French and Russian history.
    Rest in peace madame.
Secondly, the Grand Duchess is dressed correctly for the occasion (IMO) in her sombre ensemble and low key makeup.
Nice to see her giving the baggy pants a break. More like that please Grand Duchess.

    1. If Helene Carrere d'Encausse had been a citizen of The United Kingdom, she would almost certainly have been awarded the title of Baroness, Dame or some other type of high ranking title.
      Her nationality was French.

GD MT looks very nice today. Nothing outrages. Funerals are always sad occasions. css

I think she looks very appropriated for the occasion.

  8. I have to disagree. She looks like she is going out on the town instead of a funeral.

That´s what I thought too. While her outfit is decent and tasteful, I find it too casual for the occasion. For a funeral, I´d dress more formally to pay respect.

In most West-European countries people do not dress too formally any more for a funeral (unless it concerns a king or queen). On the contrary nowadays someone who is dressed too formal is considered has someone who is not paying very much respect. Rose

    4. I don´t agree with that assessment, Rose. Most people consider a funeral a formal occasion and they do dress up. It depends of course on your defintion of "formal"; to normal people it doesn´t mean headgear or longdress, but certainly calls for suit+tie for men and a dress or skirt suit (ideally with dark stockings) for ladies. Admittedly, I haven´t been to a funeral very recently, but I am not aware of the dress code having shifted over the past years. And I very much dispute the claim that dressing too formal for a funeral is considered as lack of respect.

    5. I agree with you @Rose. Your comment is correct.
In some Anglo-Saxon countries there is a change to the funeral being the "celebration of a person's life".
Bright coloured clothes and happy conversations are the order of the day. The families do not attend the burial or cremation service but say goodbye at the church or the location where the funeral is held.
But in Latin countries, sombre dressing is still requested and will probably stay like that for a long time.

Deadeggs it is really ones choice if they dress up or down for a funeral!

@ Vanessa & deadeggs. Since Maria Teresa and myself are both living in the Benelux I can assure you that we are also going in dark clothes to church or to the place were the cremation take place. The men are wearing a dark pant suit and a tie. But women are not forbidden to wear pants. Look at Queen Mathilde when she went recently to the funeral of her uncle, she was wearing a black Armani pant suit without a hat but with black accessories. She looked very descent. It is custom now that women or men can also wear dark colors like navy, dark green, dark brown, dark beige. One can be as respectful as someone who is dressed in black. I have been to several funerals during the last 3 years and it is only the closest family who is dressed more or less formal. Colors are not forbidden but normally people are not going to a funeral or a cremation in red, yellow, orange, pink...

It is sad, when one can say, at least she did not 'over dress' in garish colors or styles. The outfit looked appropriate for a funeral. Janice

I wonder if she has stopped wearing dresses because of surgical scars? She may feel self conscious.

  11. GD MT looks very good here, not sure if she is wearing Navy or Black, regardless she looks well groomed and appropriately dressed.

      Agreed , Ava.
It looks to be navy blue on my screen and, if so, it is appropriate for the Grand Duchess as she is a person outside the closer/ immediate family orbit(I think she is).
The outfit looks somber and not too formal, well done.
      Her kitten heels are fine.
