This is a beautifully tailored jacket and I like her bumper hats. Sometimes I wish she would wear a formal kimono to some of these very formal occasions.

    1. I would love that! I am sure someone somewhere would complain that it was too traditional or boring.

Ladyofthemanor. I wonder if you realize how many time it takes to put on a formal kimono. It is a whole ceremony to dress in the formal kimono. The ladies responsible for helping the Empress bring on layer after layer (there is a certain way to put it on). Therefore these kimono's are only used for very special occasions like a wedding or a coronation. Also the hairstyle that is going with the kimono must be done. I suppose it takes time too. Rose

  2. Pour ce service commémoratif, le couple impérial nous montre les mêmes images que l'an dernier ; Naruhito et Masako ont beaucoup d'allure sans nous décevoir !

Empress Masako is dressed impeccably from head to toe, I've come to expect no less from her. However, I would like to see a different style of hat from the bumper style she favors. I wonder if the reason is in order not to emphasize her height as being taller than Emperor Naruhito?

I'm afraid she will stick with the bumper hats, which is not a complimentary look on anyone in my opinion (Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands comes to mind). Her mother-in-law stuck with the small percher/saucer hat that looked like it would tip over her forehead with the slightest shake of her head - sometimes nice, sometimes just silly looking. S.M.

@ S.M The reason why Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands wore this type of hat when she was Queen was because of her voluminous hairstyle. Her hats were even bigger than Empress Masako's. Former Queen Beatrix pretended that the shape of her hat had been chosen to avoid her hair needed to be done again when she went inside and wished to take the hat off. Rose

Always classy and elegant, no matter which event is on the addenda. So nice to see her. css

  6. To me it seems that the suit the Empress is wearing is a bit too wide on her. I also think that the skirt is a bit too long. The hat is beautifully crafted, no doubt about that, but the form/shape is just a repeat ad nauseam. I understand the strict formality of this particular event, and that it called for sombre clothing, of course. It just might be that the more senior ladies of the Japanese Imperial House takes conservative dressing a bit too far into completely outdated territory. That it can be done differently was shown by Princess Kako most recently. She tried to add some modern twist to her clothing regulations, and it worked nicely.

    1. She dresses for her ob, not your entertainment. These posts remind me of when the hospital finally let nurses wear athletic shoes. A patient had the nerve to call in and complain that the 2 nurses who took care of him after his accident had on colored tennis shoes and not white nursing shoes. Didn't care that we kept him from bleeding to death, he just wanted to complain about our shoes.

@Mildred this is an international blog, in most countries nurses don't wear athletic shoes, it would be seen unprofessional. (fyi- am hospital staff in Europe)

      To Mildred Pierce: For Mildred:
I don't know what the rules are in your country, but in my country the white color of the uniform of nurses and doctors is required due to strict hygiene regulations. White clothes and shoes are easier to disinfect in a hospital cleaner. Even sterile cleanliness is required in the hospital. I too - as a patient - feel good when I see pure white.

In Belgium the nurses are wearing no longer nursing shoes since at least 20 years. They wear different brands of comfort shoes, there was a period they all wore crocs but I don't see these anymore. They wear Birkenstock sometimes but also high quality trainers from different comfort brands (not the cheap sport brands young teenagers wear).

    5. Dear Mildred Pierce. Did I say that I wish for entertainment by the Japanese Imperial Family? I just said that I think her grey suit is too long (others noticed as well) where the skirt is concerned and that it is possible to soften up the strict dress code on occasion should the person wish to go down that route. Not with one word did I complain or criticise on an abnormal level. This is a fashion blog and opinions on outfits worn by the royals featured here come naturally, so I should think.

      Hello, @Deadeggs.
I think there must be the same bug in my mobile too LOL.
The story of the bleeding patient/ nurses Is worth being looked into, isn't' It?
I mean...here we have a patient who admittely survived thanks to some nurses.
As soon as he... resurrected, bashing nurses' shoes was what first crossed his mind.
Wow, he should have been strong and furious...or was It fast and furious?
      Can't remember now.
Please, Deadeggs, keep the kettle going, I feel we are on the brink of another sad, sad day...
      Strong cuppas tea needed...

I like that the back of the jacket is similar to the tails on her husbands coat. Always a interesting embellishment, perfect fit. I must say the colour is not to my taste, but suits her well.

Beautifully tailored suit on the Empress. I do wish the skirt was a bit shorter because it would be more flattering if it were a bit shorter. I also wish she would move her hats a bit further back on her forehead as the brim is almost sitting on her eyes. She does look lovely and elegant as always.

  9. This is a very exquisite suit, beautifully crafted and well tailored. The pale grey hose look great. The single strand pearl necklace is splendid, very elegant. The black shoes and clutch are the perfect finishing touch.
