On July 7, 2023, Queen Mathilde of Belgium attended the 19th edition of the Coronation Festival (Kroningsfeesten) in Tongeren. The Festival are organized every seven years in commemoration of the crowning of the miraculous statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary by Bishop Doutreloux in 1890. The celebrations last for four days. The Coronation Celebrations are recognized as intangible cultural heritage.
Natan Geisha printed taffeta dress
Why dies Natan favour these giant belts and giant buckles which don't flatter anyone? I like the dress, in principle, but the belt spoils it in my opinion. Like the hat and shoes.
ReplyDeleteAgree !!
DeleteI agree. A belt like that doesn’t look good on anyone, unless you have the waistline of the model on the picture… which is physically almost impossible for any woman. I love Mathilde’s accessories by the way. They take the eyes of that belt
DeleteI was speechless the first time I saw this dress on Mathilde, so now just one sentence: Model photos and waistlines are heavily photoshopped.

I love this dress but for once I'm not in favour of Natan's big belt. To be honest, it doesn't look so bad on the model but it doesn't look good when Mathilde wears the dress. It bunches up too much on the bodice. Mathilde has chosen some variation on the sleeve print, and she has worn the collar differently than the model. I think I like the model's style better, but Mathilde still looks good - apart from the belt.

The model has the sleeves turned up so the print is visible. Mathilde wears them down and you can just see glimpses of the print on the inside. I think it is difficult to get them to stay up when you are moving around. I like the dress, belt and all.

@Ladyofthemanor: I'm usually always in favour of his big buckle belts as well, except for this time. To me they are his style statement.

Nathan or course. Juste à voir la ceinture beaucoup trop large.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Annie.
ReplyDeleteA lovely dress per se but spoiled by the huge belt which is unflattering.
You can always count on Natan to do something a bit off.
Lovely accessories.
The belt! There is no space between her belt buckle and her breasts. This happens each time with these wide belts. As she is a queen and one of the brand's biggest ambassadors, one would think Natan would customize a narrow belt for her.
ReplyDeleteHe did before the big belts came into fashion and not only at Natan's. During that period Queen Mathilde received the same reactions as now "always that THIN belt because of Natan". Anyone might assume Queen Mathilde herself asked for such a belt because she like it. The dress is a repeat and I like the queen in this dress. At least it doesn't look like a nighty. More the style of Dior 1950. What is remarkable is that the cuffs of the sleeves are detached. Normally queen Mathilde's outfit is always impeccable. I guess the chamber maid didn't see it should be attached again. By the way Queen Maxima has the same dress in plain turquoise. She always did receive good comments despite the big belt. Rose
DeleteI completely agree! Mathilde wears his creations even more than Maxima. Natan should be willing to design her clothes with her figure in mind. The failure to do that indicates poor product execution to me. Maybe someone needs to tell Mathilde to insist on modifications from Natan regarding figure-flattering fit issues or stop wearing Natan's clothes.
DeleteYou make it sound as if Queen Mathilde doesn't has other clothes than those made by Natan. It is not only Natan that put those big belt in his dresses other designers did it too. In the meantime this fashion detail is already over. Up to new things. I don't think Queen Mathilde will throw away her old dresses just because you all are against some of them. Rose
DeleteNo one said she only wears Natan. Natan is responsible for the wide belts she wears. They don't flatter her figure. The fashion houses should be dressing royal ladies for the bodies they have, not the clothes they want to be seen. If their clothes don't make the woman wearing them look their best, they aren't doing their jobs as designers.
DeleteIt’s bright, it’s bold (the dress). Well chosen for the occasion.
ReplyDeleteThe accessories tie in well.
Maybe NATHAN owns a subsidiary company that makes belts?
Just a thought 😉
Très joli modèle estival mais le bât blesse au niveau de la ceinture trop large avec une boucle trop grosse ; à la place de cette sorte de tambourin, j'aurais bien vu un serre-tête plus discret de la même couleur que sa pochette et ses chaussures !
ReplyDeleteThe dress has potential but needs to be streamlined. Lose the big belt and replace by a narrow one. Take some bulk off the skirt, both in length and volume. Reduce the sleeve cuffs to half the size. The burgundy accessories are on point. The belt should ideally match in colour.
ReplyDeleteThat belt is ghastly--even on the model. When Mathilde is sitting that belt looks even worse. Still, and inspite of the awkwardness of the designer's ideas, Mathilde looks wonderful. Her accessories are beautiful and the dress would be beautiful too if she changes out that belt for a narrow one in the same color of her accessories.

Queen Mathilde needs to wear bespoke clothing made for her figure. She looks so uncomfortable in this dress and belt that is ill fitted for her silhouette.
ReplyDeleteEvents can be difficult enough. Best to wear comfortable, professional attire that moves with you instead of overwhelming you.
I think Queen Mathilde is not feeling uncomfortable. If she does you can be sure she won't wear this dress anymore. She is someone who knows exactly what she wants. She is not someone who let the designer decide in her place and certainly not when she doesn't like it. She has comfortable and loose dresses without any belt because the design doesn't need one and not by Natan but by designers with an international reputation. Remarkable we don't read comments then (bad or good) by those who dislike Natan. Also when she wears a dress or an ensemble by an unidentified designer the haters automatically say it is without any doubt by Natan. These are the things I noticed since I started to follow Queen Mathilde on this blog. Rose
DeleteI fully agree with Rose.
DeleteThis must be a NATAN dress, Mathilde looks good . css
ReplyDeleteThe belt I feel, spoils the overall look of this dress. The dress itself is quite nice. I do love the rich burgundy accessories, excellent choice.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately he's the favorite dressmaker of Maxima and Mathilde.
ReplyDeleteNo he is not. I am sure as well Queen Maxima as Queen Mathilde have both at least an equal number of dresses, tops and skirts, pantsuits and gala dresses, etc... made by other designers from all over Europe and beyond. It is not so that either Mathilde or Maxima stick to the designers of their own country or to each others. (Belgium/The Netherlands). From Queen Mathilde I know there is even a number of outfits that never were pictured on this blog and that were not designed by Natan.
