    1. I think Queen M. looks great in that dress - elegant and royal.

  3. Oh boy. I’m a huge fan of floral prints, love me some Erdem, but this design overwhelms the pattern due to an enormous amount of extra fabric that gets wider from top to bottom. The cut is not a flattering design.

  4. She may be a lovely person but this dress is a two-person pup tent made from upholstery scraps. In addition to being ugly, it makes her look enormous. The guards in the background of photos 1 and 2 have the most intriguing outfits of the evening. They are the ones I want to know more about. Ed.

  5. While I don't normally like a cape-effect dress, I'm liking the way this one drapes on QM, I'm also liking the bold color & bold print - somehow this unusual combo works on Mathilde. Again the First Lady of Lithuania deserves an honorable mention, very elegant looking, dress fits perfectly and fabric is lush. I always find it interesting how non-royals try to find a suitable "substitute" for the historic jewels worn by their royal counterparts, so as not to look under-dressed by comparison. I like what Diana has done here. S.M.

    1. I agree with you.
I don´t dislike Mathilde´s dress as much as I should. I usually prefer more structured designs with a defined waist and I therefore wouldn´t have chosen this, but to my surprise, I find it kind of ok, and the colour and pattern are quite pretty in my view.
I also agree about the Lithuanian first lady. She looks wonderful and certainly on par with her royal guest. The dress is divine and her jewellery just the right size - a well chosen and elegant statement piece. And I want to add that her hair is beautifully styled.

    2. I fully concur. This isn’t a run-of-the-mill cape dress and Mathilde wears it well. It helps that she is quite tall. Also favours her body type as some of her other outfits particularly emphasize certain proportions that are best ‘masked’ rather than put to the forefront.

    3. Agree with you both. The dress is a bit "Maxima" but actually looks okay, in my view. I like the colour and pattern. While the First Lady's dress is a nice style, I think its bland colour detracts from it

  6. Yikes! I wish I could be more positive about Mathilde's gown but it's like a huge, huge tent. Can't even call it a kaftan. Good thing she is tall, for a shorter person couldn't possibly wear this. The red colour is quite striking and the blue leaves and flowers compliment the red all of which speaks to the fabric and not the style. But that's about it.

The First Lady by contrast looks bold and statuesque and her dress is perfect for her strong figure. I was confused by that sort of grey bib in the first two photos but it seems to have disappeared after that. Perhaps a shadow of something? Wish the fabric was a little stretchy to give some shape past her hips and knees, but she still looks great.

  7. Queen Mathilde looks stunning! The best I have seen her look in a while since she mostly wears Natan. Beautiful fabric, colors, and style which suits her figure. MR

    1. I agree with you. I think this is very good and it drapes beautifully. The dress looks a lot better on her than on the model. Lovely colours.

    1. Yes the harmony between the design and the material is not really a success.

  14. Queen Mathilde has other cape dresses which fit better than this one. Why buy a new one if you have better evening dresses in your closet. Together with the big flowers this cape dress look a bit enormous. Lucky she is wearing her diamond Wolfers tiara and aquamarine drop earrings. Rather unusual, normally she doesn't wear a tiara on a state visit when it is a country without a monarchy, except for the visit of president Macron of France and Brigitte Macron to Brussels she wore a tiara etc... and a beautiful gala dress.

  15. Thank you, Anonymous25/10/22 03:44, for raising the issue of jewellry/ I have always been wondering about royal tiaras for such occasions. They do not seem appropriate somehow, given that one's counterpart cannot match them. As the royals are not waering full regalia including orders, it maybe wear something discrete nowadays? Like Spanish royals did in Germany.

    1. I agree...no need for a tiara here.

    2. Interesting observation about the jewelry balance between royals and non-royals, I agree, full regalia is not appropriate. On the other hand, I expect the rebublic nations much enjoy the visiting royal glamour, it could be perceived as almost impolite to the host nation with a too toned down look, as if they are not ”worthy” of the beautiful royal jewellry (and outfits) so IMHO a tiara - yes, but definitely a nice smaller tiara.

  16. Wow a stunning dress for Queen Mathilde. Because she is such a tall lady this cape model suits her gorgeously. Colour and print amazing. A top gown

  17. While I might not totally agree with the dress, I do appreciate that Queen Mathilde is wearing a tiara, albeit a smaller one, for this occasion. Lithuania is a republic, as is Germany, and I'm still not quite over the fact that a couple of days ago Queen Letizia chose not to wear a tiara for the state dinner on their visit to Germany. In my opinion, Mathilde is showing the right amount of bling and jewels for a state visit to a non-monarchy country. There's no need to avoid a tiara at all cost. This is how you do it.

  18. What a magnificent dress! Suits Mathilde perfectly! The dress of the Lithuanian first lady is very stylish but a bit dull compared to Mathilde’s bold statement gown.

  19. Mathilde has accumulated a number of lovely evening gowns, this I’m afraid is not one of them. Natan designs tends to be more misses than hits ! Yet Mathilde seems to be a huge fan ! Mathilde is far better with the simpler structured designs.
This design even in the model is unappealing!

  20. This gown looks almost like a tent. The color is nice and so the Tiara. Q M could have done way better, The First Lady looked lovely css

  21. I LOVE this! The colour, the cut, the hairstyle, the tiara - stunning ensemble! Given the amount of fabric, it shouldn't work, but it does - and it looks even better on Mathilde than it does on the model, in my opinion.

  22. I love the idea of this dress, I feel though the fit is too large, regardless she looks lovely, the fabric design is beautiful and stands out. Her tiara and earrings are gorgeous. The First Lady looks stunning, a beautiful gown, fit and color suits her perfectly. The fabric pattern I love. Her up do, from all angles looks wonderful. I am not sure what the necklace is but its effective and looks great. Earrings look to be studs. A lovely presentation by her. The President is a very elegant man, especially in this tux.
