On August 22, 2022, Archduchess Marie Astrid and Archduke Carl Christian, Archduchess Anna-Gabriele and Archduke Carl Christian, Archduke Rudolph and Baroness Marie Helen, Prince Guillaume, Princess Sibilla and Prince Jean attended the funeral of Prince Wauthier de Ligne, who was a first cousin of Grand Duke of Luxembourg. The funeral took place at the Saint-Pierre church in Beloei, Belgium.
The prince died on August 15. He was the son of Prince Antoine de Ligne, who was married to Princess Alix, the youngest sister of Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg and aunt of Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg. The de Ligne family is one of the oldest and most illustrious families of nobles in Belgium.
Would be nice if there was information under each photo telling us who is who.
ReplyDeleteI see Marie-Astrid of Luxemburg (Archduchess by marriage) and her husband. Prince Jean (a brother of prince Guillaume of Luxemburg) and his wife Princess Sibilla. Prince Guillaume does not appear on the photo's. The other pictures are probably members of the de Ligne family. The funeral took place in Beloeil (Belgium). The de Ligne's belong indeed together with the de Mérode's and others to the oldest aristocratic families of Belgium. The story goes that in 1830 one could not find any man from these families who agreed to become the new king of Belgium. That's why they had to look abroad and found Prince Leopold of Saxen Coburg and Gotha who accepted to become the new king.
ReplyDeleteSibilla is Prince Guillaume's wife (she is in the 7th picture from above). In the 8th picture, there's Prince Jean and his wife Diane.
DeleteThere are two princes named Guillaume in Luxembourg: Henri's brother and Henri's eldest son. In these photos it's the older Guillaume..
DeleteAnd about Leopold, the first king of Belgium: he was an uncle of queen Victoria of UK (her mother's side) and had been married to a British princess..
Margot
Both Prince Guillaume who is married to Sibilla and Prince Jean are pictured. Prince Guillaume is greeting his sister Marie-Astrid.
DeleteThanks everybody. I was confused about prince Guillaume. I forgot the one who is greeting his sister Princess Marie-Astrid was in fact an uncle of the young prince Guillaume.
DeleteI know the history of King Leopold I, I know his first wife was a British princess by the name of Princess Charlotte. I learned also that queen Victoria's husband was Albert von Saxen Coburg and related to Leopold first king of Belgium.
A big turnout on this sad occasion. Lots of family ,Luxemburg Austria and others. May he RIP.css
ReplyDeleteThis is obviously a very somber occasion and as deadeggs, has mentioned, I am not really sure who is who.
ReplyDeleteMalgré cette affluence, j'ai réussi à remarquer l'absence des Grands-ducs de Luxembourg
ReplyDeleteNo hats worn by the ladies attending the funeral. ??
ReplyDelete@ deadeggs. In Belgium it is not an obligation anymore to wear hats in church to go to a funeral or any other ceremony. However, if you wish to wear a hat you are free to do so. It is still very hot in Belgium that can be a reason too and also why many women are wearing a dress and no jacket or coat.
DeleteAlso Prince Henry de Ligne & his wife, older brother of the deceased. Also Archduchess and Anna Gabriele near Marie Astrid. And Archduke Rudolf & his wife. Rudolf & Archduke Carl Christian are also 1st cousins of the deceased through their mother Princess Yolanda de Ligne
ReplyDeleteon the last picture there are the children of Wauthier de Ligne: his son Philippe and then his daughters Mélanie and Elisabeth.
