On June 25, Princess Mabel of Orange-Nassau attended the 30th edition of the Amsterdam Dinner, a charity event aiming to raise money for the Aids Foundation. The dinner took place at the AFAS Live in Amsterdam. The charity event was initiated in 1992 when the HIV epidemic hit the Netherlands.
As in previous years, most of the proceeds of the 30th edition will go to the H-TEAM. This team of Dutch scientists and doctors carry out research into HIV, including acute HIV infection. Activities of Princess Mabel have focused on strengthening of human rights, supporting defenseless groups and especially supporting teenager girls and young women suffering from HIV infections.
Viktor & Rolf Satin Flower Mini Dress
I don't like this dress at all, too virginal, too wide and too short for a princess who will be soon 54.
ReplyDeleteModel korte driehoek, wat een jammerlijke misser voor Mabel..
ReplyDeleteWhen I saw the first picture of Princess Mabel's dress (I only could see the neck and top of the bodice) I thought oh this looks like a beautiful dress. When I saw picture N°2 I was disappointed. The dress looks like an embellished white tent. It is too short for a women who is not that young anymore. The other ladies on the picture : the best of those two is the one with the cape dress. It is not a wow, but is the best of the two (or the three)
DeleteI can't find anything positive about this look. Mabel seems to have an obsession with showing her legs (and arms). Perhaps it is time her stylist tells her it is time to start dressing like a woman in her fifties. The choice of jewellry doesn't match with the modern dress at all. Also, wearing pearls makes her look very old. The same goes for the hair style.
ReplyDeleteI am young ( 32) and I love wearing pearls and nobody ever said that wearing them makes me look old.
DeleteAva
Her hair and earrings are both lovely. As for the dress, P. Mabel has always had her own distinctive, quirky style and this is yet another example of it. To me the dress is too short and too wide, but clearly she likes it. (V.M.)
ReplyDeleteIs this what could be called a baby doll dress? Its too short. A couple of inches longer and a belt on it would be an improvement km
ReplyDelete@km. Yes babydoll dress. Or Twiggy would look great in this dress.
DeleteHer hairstyle looks great.
I read where she now lives in London with her children.
Yes - longer and with a belt. As is, it´s waiting for a malfunction to happen, given it was a windy day.
DeleteTo me, this looks like a (too short) maternity dress, something you´d wear at 8 or 9 months along. Babydoll - yes, I guess, though I think that typically, babydoll style dresses don´t only feature this kind of width and this kind of short length, but also some sort of underbust seam, where the width of the skirt is gathered.
Respect for Princess Mabel's work in the AIDS Foundation 🙏, but her dress is 10-15 cm too short for her age and in 2022.
ReplyDeleteJulie
Si mon choix devait être fait, j'opterais pour la dame vêtue de la robe verte imprimée fleurie qui serait quand même mieux avec quelques dizaines de centimètres en moins !
ReplyDeleteLove seeing Princess Mabel at any event. Don't like the dress--the top is fine and she is fortunate that her arms are still looking good enough to get away with a sleeveless dress. The dress is just too short to look smart. It's not an thing---her niece Princess Ariana wore a white dress for last week's photo shoot which was just too short to be smart. Would be interesting to hear how a woman in her fifties should dress. Like Queen Letizia? Jennifer Anniston? Halle Berry (recently photographed in a short sleeveless dress)
ReplyDeleteThird line should read "It's not and AGE thing"
DeleteI don’t like the dress, it’s not bad but not great either. But why should a woman with great legs cover them just because she’s 54 ? It’s not a vulgar dress.
ReplyDeleteBecause great legs at 54 are not as great as at 20!!
DeleteLegs with such a knees are never looking great.
DeleteAva
Don’t mind the knees. Nothing wrong with them and she has nicer legs than lots of 20 somethings…
DeleteMabel is such an admirable person. I have great respect for her in how she dealt with the tragic loss of her husband. That said, I have to say this dress is not flattering on Princess Mabel. It would be perfect for one of younger princesses. This babydoll style is not a good choice for a mature woman. Her hair and jewelry are great but she had selected a different dress.
ReplyDeleteJanet
@Janet. I have respect for ALL the women who lost their husband in a tragic accident. Princess Mabel got the chance that she is rich. All the common women who lost their husband who was the only with a salary.
DeleteOoh lucky Mabel @anon16:22. What you're actually saying is you don't feel sorry for Mabel.
DeleteAnon 16:22, Whether you are wealthy or not the tragic death of a husband is the same.
DeleteAva
Good grief, why do people keep bringing Friso's accident up every time Mabel appears on the scene? It was 2012-13, she has moved on with her life. Lots of other widows have lost their husbands due to similar tragic accidents. Do you think Mabel wants it brought up all the time? Please, let it go. *Regina
DeleteIt's a lovely dress but unfortunately way too short. Undoubtedly it is a Victor and Rolf design, cause Mabel is always supporting these designers from the beginning
ReplyDeleteFrom which age on would it be appropriate to cover the face too, because the signs of old age become too obvious?
ReplyDeleteGreat comment, obsession with looking young is insane and narcissistic.
DeleteMabel is a loyal client of Victor and Rolf, whose designs are more for the museum than to wear.
ReplyDeleteThis is an example,
Mabel
Her face is aging a bit too much, more than it should be at 54.
ReplyDeleteHer body and legs are great though.
She Is nice and engaged in good initiatives.
The thing I'm most disturbed at by these comments is the fact people don't think she can show her arms and legs 'at her age'. Seriously? Just WOW. I think she looks great. Yes, I think the dresses a little voluminous for my taste, but she otherwise looks good. Love the hair.
ReplyDeleteChel
Agreed.
DeleteWell said, Chel!
DeleteI agree with you. She has great legs so why can t she show them even if she is 50+. This said,I really dont like the cut of the dress - especially when you look at photo number 3. Or maybe it is the wind that makes it look even wider.
DeleteFrom what I have read on this blog who can wear short dresses? Because just on todays posts I have seen people comment that Infanta Leonor can also not wear a mini dress and just the other day someone made the comments on Princess Ariane dress from the photo shoot. If a teenage cannot wear one then who can! As long as the person feels comfortable and confident then why shouldn't they wear the dress, especially if they have great legs like Mabel does, then why not show them off. I only wish I have legs that good when I am 50.
DeleteIf the dress were narrower and longer, the "look" would be great.
ReplyDeleteThis dress would look nice on a much younger person.Mabel is a very nice and hard working Lady, but she needs help to dress her.
ReplyDeletePossibly you could offer your skills?
DeleteMargot
Pss Mabel looks happy, engaging and confident, this dress obviously appealed to her. I love her diamond and pearl earrings, they are beautiful, excellent quality. Her up do looks elegant and stylish. The multi colored striped gown is very appealing, be it a little long, very elegant and graceful.
ReplyDeleteAdd a long white skirt to Princess Mabel's dress and you would have a nice wedding dress.
ReplyDeleteAnd whilst talking of wedding dresses, I think the wedding dress of Princess Mabel would have to be one of my favorites of that era (2004).
DeletePlenty of photos around on the net, but can't give a direct link.
Try a Google search with key words, such as .......
...... photo, Princess Mabel of Orange-Nassau, wedding dress 2004.
I immediately thought of a mini wedding dress, too.
DeleteAnonymous @16:22, I don’t understand your comment, what does being a widow rich or poor has anything to do with this blog, yes we aware that there are millions of people that aren’t rich or royal, and?
ReplyDeleteI like the dress, I am not crazy about how it fits her, and that has nothing to do with her age. Some women are just so age intolerant, why should she cover her legs and arms? Funny to read how some praise Caroline for embracing her wrinkles and grey hair, according to some of the comments she should cover both since she isn’t young anymore.

Delete1. It was my answer to Janet who said "I've great respect for how she dealt with the tragic loss of her husband"
2. For poor women with children who lost their husband I have even more respect if they can overcome the loss of their husband.
In these situations money can help a lot if you have it.
It has nothing to do with fashion but if someone give a comment that has nothing to do with this blog I have the right to give my opinion too.
Good for you Mabel - you do you. Wear what you like and enjoy it. In spite of the fact that you're clearly past it and should only set foot outside at nighttime covered from head to toe in some sort of sack.
ReplyDeleteWhy do you need to make anything extreme?? Some people just stated that her legs, being 54, are not wonderful anymore!!!
DeleteAre you able to understand a text?
Are you able to understand sarcasm when you see it?
DeleteCan't stand ageism...simple as...
Oh get over yourself Anon 8:00 - there's nothing wrong with her legs. And at 54 she's perfectly capable of making a decision on what she wants to wear. If she has no problem with her legs all power to her - they look just like legs to me.
DeleteI can't believe it ! It is NOT that she is at "that age" but simply that short dress does not suits her.
ReplyDeleteAva
I like the dress although i don't think it suits her that well. Maybe its the color, the shoes. I like the pearls.
ReplyDeleteFun thing is the cape dress is the exact same one that Queen Mathilde wore in red a few weeks back. Shame that brand doesn't ship to the US, because I was looking at getting it.
ReplyDelete@Anonymous 27/6/22 06:45
DeleteCould you let me know on what occasion Queen Mathilde wore exactly the same dress in red ? I don't recall she has(d) a dress like that.
@Anonymous 27/6/22 06;45 continued
DeleteFound out myself which dress it is. I didn't thought the cape dress with stripes was from the same brand "Essentiel Antwerp" as Queen Mathilde's red dress.
Mabel comes out to public events like twice a year at best, and always brings out the most whacky clothes with her. And I always look forward to see what she will be wearing that will have most people clutching their pearls. Must say, she didn't disappoint lol! I have utmost respect for her for her work and I have accepted that she will never ever wear a normal looking clothing ever. That is her charm!
ReplyDeleteSee her again during Prince Friso awards!
Mimi
To say that Princess Mabel's fashion sense is quirky would be putting it mildly, a tad bizarre leaning strongly towards eccentric would probably be a more apt description. Do I like her ensemble - no! Do I like her joie de vivre - YES!
ReplyDelete~It's Me~
O.K. but she gets hard competition from her sister in law, Princess Laurentien who comes out with, IMO, the wackest fashion get-ups of all.
DeleteIt is always a pleasure to see princess Mabel, she is one of my favourites and it is such a shame we hardly get to see her. I actually like her ensemble.
