On June 4, 2022, Prince Gustav of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg and Carina Axelsson got married at the Evangelical Church of Bad Berleburg Castle in Germany. Crown Prince Frederik, Crown Princess Mary, Prince Joachim, Princess Marie, Princess Benedikte, Princess Alexandra, Prince Hubertus and Princess Kelly attended the wedding ceremony.
The religious ceremony had 80 guests and happened at the private chapel at Schloss Berleburg. Carina Axelsson wore the Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg Spike Tiara. The civil ceremony had 40 guests and happened at the Orangerie behind Schloss Berleburg.
Carina Axelsson is an American author, best known for the teen fashion detective series Model Under Cover. For many years, Prince Gustav has resided with his partner, Carina Axelsson, although they have been unable to marry due to a clause in Gustav's grandfather's will. The will prevents him from inheriting family property if he marries someone not of Protestant, noble and Aryan descent. Despite that, on 27 April 2022, the Danish court confirmed that Gustav will marry Axelsson on 4 June 2022.
I know I'm seeing things! Why would you were a tiara to someone's wedding? Tacky, tacky!!!
ReplyDeleteIt's not at all tacky! As opposed to the British royals, the continental European royals have a white tie dress code for their weddings, and therefore women wear tiaras.
DeletePerhaps because the dress code specified that tiaras were in order, seeing that at least 4 of the guests are wearing them? 4 could not have made a mistake - and especially those 4 that we can see.
Delete- Anon 9:13
??? It was a late afternoon ceremony. Typical for scandinavian royal weddings. The mother of the groom is a born Princess of Denmark. For sure they wore tiaras.
DeleteYes, you are seeing things. You are seeing tiaras. Lots of them. Quite normal for European royalty under those circumstances. THEY know what they are doing!
DeleteIts part of the dress code for most European royal weddings.
DeleteWhy would it be tacky? Aren’t all of the Royal ladies wearing tiaras? I would think that they understand the protocols very well, and it’s highly unlikely that they would choose to wear something inappropriate. (V.M.)
DeleteBecause the dress code for the late afternoon wedding was white tie. And hence tiaras are expected.
DeleteThe reason why you write your sort of whimsical comments is a mystery to me.
DeleteAre you alright?
It's quite obvious that you are not familiar with any sort of royal (or aristocratic) protocol whatsoever. And to describe tiaras (some of them heirlooms for decades, if not centuries) of considerable value tacky... well, then something must be wrong with your perception for sure.
DeleteFinally. Wish them all the best. A peaceful life, full of love. Was the crownprince couple maid of honour and best man for the civil wedding? The last picture looks very special.
ReplyDeleteThey were their witnesses for the civil wedding :)
DeleteYes. I read that they were the official witnesses at the civil ceremony.
Delete- Anon 9:13
Katharina, they were yes...
DeleteAwesome!! I'm very happy for them!! They've waited a long time!! Oh and everyone looks very nice!!
ReplyDeletecongratulations
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful that they finally got to have their wedding, so happy for them! Beautiful bride.
ReplyDeleteAnd CP Mary, I am at awe, she is by far the best dressed Royal ever, I want everything that she’s wearing.

It is so interesting and actually perfect that we all have different opinions. It makes for a great blog. To me Mary is not at all the best dressed royal and I just cant put a finger on it but I never go wow as I do with others. For this occasion I love Marie's pink dress. ps I am not from Denmark.
ReplyDeleteI actually find Marie’s pink dress to fussy and Barbie like. Mary looks sublime!
DeleteSo happy that against all odds they married no one should be denied happiness. Like her wedding dress regal elegance also love her tiara. Mary
ReplyDeleteAnonymous @ 19:08, if you find tiaras tacky at a wedding, perhaps you are on the wrong blog.
ReplyDelete1. Tiaras are to be worn at designated events, most particularly at weddings, and state events.
2. As a rule only married women are allowed to use them.
3. Generally not to be worn before 6 PM, unless is a wedding, on which they are acceptable at any time.
4. Different Royal Houses establish different protocols.
The only tacky thing is your comment.
👍👍
DeleteYour number two is not valid though. There is no rule about who is allowed to wear a tiara. You need not look further than to Crown Princess Victoria if you want proof. She's been wearing tiaras since she came of age.
Delete/Haga
@/Haga. We are not living in the Victorian era anymore.
Delete@ Anonymous 18:09 Eh? What kind of royal watcher are you who don't know that Sweden's current Crown Princess' name is Victoria? She's our FUTURE Queen.

First I like to say finally. Congratulation to the newlyweds. The new Pss's gown is beautiful. Both look happy. Maybe a guestlist will be posted?. I am so glad to see the CP couple and the Prince couple there. I like the gown of Pss Kelly of SCG, the Tiara is splendid. Does any one know who the children belong to. I know Corina is the godmother of Prince Philip of SCG. Maybe someone will post more photos.
ReplyDeletePrince Gustav has two married sisters and they have children, but I don't know their age.

The bride looks absolutely lovely. Her dress fits beautifully, and the veil, tiara, and earrings all complement it very nicely. How wonderful that they were finally able to wed. (V.M.)
ReplyDeleteI'ts protocol for weddings after 4:00 p.m. to wear tiara's. Espcially european royals.
ReplyDeleteTiaras have a limited amount of use; so when you get a chance to show off a few diamonds why not. The bride looks lovely; it is her day .I do like Princess Marie's dress. The flower girls and pages are cute. Who needs family money and some threat, that is nothing enjoyable; better to have your own money, it makes things more credible.(Tara)
ReplyDeleteThe Scandinavian Royal weddings are my favorite. I can't put my finger on it. They have the real fairy tale Royal feel...white tie and tails, evening gowns and tiaras for the ladies.
ReplyDeleteI love all of it!
So happy that Gustave and Carina are finally able to marry--I wish them much happiness! Hard to see everything but I think Princess Benedikte looks beautiful in her pink gown. I believe the blonde lady behind PB is one of her daughters and I like what I can see of that dress. CP Mary's gown is a repeat and is lovely. I do like Princess Marie's pink gown but as this was a religious service in a church she probably should have worn something over her bare arm and shoulder. Carina is a stunning bride and she and Gustave look so happy together. The final picture of newlyweds and the Danish CP couple is marvelous--Carina's suit is bridal lovely and CP Mary's dress is one of my favorites. Hope to see more pictures of this happiest of days in Berleburg!

Not all the European royals wear tiara's at weddings. It is custom especially in the Scandinavian royal families also that the ladies wear long evening gowns at the religious ceremony. In other European families the long evening gowns are only worn during the evening, during the day ceremonies (civil or religious) the ladies wear short dresses or ensembles and a hat.
ReplyDeleteThe lime line for white tie (long dresses for ladies) is 18.00 (6.00 PM), but if the religious ceremony starts earlier and people go straight from the church to the reception/dinner white tie is worn all the way from the start. This applies also non-royals (who normally don't have tiaras).

I like the dresses of Princess Benedikte, CP Mary, Princess Marie, Princess Kelly. I love especially Princess Marie's dress it has the right color and the design is very beautiful. Although I don't like Erdem dresses, CP Mary's is beautiful and fits well. The other dress by Zimmerman has not a good color and is too long. I forgot the bride, simple dress, long lace vail, . . beautiful.
ReplyDeleteEveryone looks amazing, especially the bride. I just LOOOOVE her bouquet
ReplyDeletePrince Gustav's mother is Princess of Denmark and in the royal houses of Scandinavia they wear tiara for late afternon wedding s . The bride,
ReplyDeletePrincess Carina looks very beautiful.
Princess Marie in pink and the Lady(Pincess ?) in turquoise amazing. // KK
The bride look very lovely. So glad to see they finally got married. Congratulations and wishing them all the best!!
ReplyDeleteI loved CPss Mary's both dresses.
Princess Benedikte looked eyecatching and lovely. She oozes elegance and style.
Princess Marie's pink dress looks romantic and elegant.
It is always a greatest pleaseure to see sparkling royal jewels worn, so what a fantastic opportunity to see so many tiaras at once!!

Mary is wearing her wedding tiara that was a gift from Queen Margrethe and late Prince Henrik. She altered it by adding pearls which she then had removed again.
ReplyDeleteShe also redesigned the ruby tiara.
DeleteTo anonymous: Crown Princess Mary changed her ruby tiara, because it was a bad fit. She has said in a TV program that she was in awe of the tiara in the beginning, but it did not fit her head and gave her headache. Her mother in law the Queen encouraged her to make it her own. I have often read that people critisize the change, but to me it makes sense. It is a heirloom passed through generations, but it has to fit! And it can easily be changed back to the next owner in the fullness of time. I feel it is unfair to blame Cp Mary on this issue.
DeleteAdding pearls to her wedding tiara and then removing them. That must be quite expensive.
DeleteAnonymous 19:29 I think its convertible, meaning she can wear it with or without the pearls. Sounds like it was a good change - making it veritable.
DeleteI believe the ruby tiara has been changed several times over the years by it different 'owners'. Its interesting to look at pictures of its different versions. Its changed quite a bit over the years.
DeleteThe ruby tiara has lost its uniqueness for sure. As for the pearls on the wedding tiara they were most likely glued on.
DeleteWhen the dresscode is evening dress/tail coat/white tie...... it is correct for ladies to wear tiaras but what is more important is that the hair should be nice and tidy i.e. not like a few princesses who leave it hanging as if they are wearing a headband. Also a tiara makes you feel extra festive, trust me.
ReplyDeleteMarie is also wearing her wedding tiara. It is gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteQuite odd that CP Mary was in a long elegant evening gown for Friday's civil wedding ceremony 🤔. It is neither British nor Danish custom!
ReplyDeleteInstead, she should have worn it for the church ceremony, dinner and evening. Not a fan of her ERDEM, too boring and ordinary for the wedding, imo.
- Julie
She wore the Zimmerman dress for the civil ceremony and the Erdam for the church wedding.
Deletecaune ....
DeleteYes, thats is what there is written. 😏
Something about pss Marie's dress looks childish. I think it is the bubble pink color of the dress combined with the applications. It also appears that the little train was not finished on the dress and the material looks cheap (even if a suspect it is not the case). Overall, I see this more as a dress for a teenage princess than for a mature one
ReplyDeleteApologies this is not being directly fashion related but, I’m seeking clarification of the caption with the photos. Obviously, grandpa was a bit of a racist and bigot but setting that aside for a second, **legally** did the courts overrule the stipulations of his will *or* is Prince Gustav still unable to inherit family property?
ReplyDeleteFashion wise, I think everyone looked lovely for the most part especially the bride.
As for the tiara ignorance, I think with two plus years of COVID-19 causing a severe draught of big royal functions - especially "large" formal weddings - some people are truly clueless and or have forgotten the protocols for tiara's, family orders, state orders, black-tie, white-tie, etc. I would invite those needing clarity ("Anon 19:08" I'm looking at you) to visit the most excellent site "The Royal Order of Sartorial Splendor" and specifically the section entitled "Royal Splendor 101: Tiara Rules."
http://orderofsplendor.blogspot.com/2011/10/royal-splendor-101-tiara-rules.html.
Just a suggestion. ;D

According to the High Regional Court in Hamm, North-Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, Prince Gustav is entitled to the complete inheritance, also there is no way to any opponent to appeal the decision of that court. That includes the stipulation of marriage to a non-protestant, non-aristocratic - and very Nazi-like - non-aryan person. The court said that it's all invalid.
DeleteThank you so much "DSC". I appreciate you.

The bride looked stunning, how marvellous that they have finally married. CP Mary looked lovely in her gown, this looks beautiful. I particularly love the gown, (I think it is the groom's sister ) is wearing, gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteIf ever there was a couple that deserved congratulations and blessings, its Gustav & Carina ! I wish them a life time of happiness !
