On June 20, Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary attended an official dinner at Grote Kerk, which is among The Hague’s oldest buildings. King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of The Netherlands were also present at the dinner. The church was built in the 1300s and today it is used for royal weddings and christenings, among other things. Danish Crown Prince and Crown Princess are making a two-day working visit to The Netherlands.

Stunning dress CP Mary!! Love the yellow shoes with it, fun color, in this case better than black since it is summertime.

Indeed, Mary looks sublime! Best of all she never seams to be overshadowed by her clothes, even in this case where the dress is particularly stunning. MR

En effet, elle a déjà porté cette magnifique robe mais j'avais déjà pensé que ces chaussures jaunes apportaient trop de contraste avec le design de sa robe ; j'aurais bien vu du satin noir !

Love this Temperley dress. I liked it the first time Mary wore it as well as her yellow satin MBs which provides a welcome pop of colour for a Spring evening event. Her make-up is artfully done too.
I also like what little we can see of Maxima. Her hair looks good and the simplicity of her gown seems to be offset by her multi strand necklace. I hope a full length photo of her can be added.

Oh great, nice that we can see Maxima's dress now in some added photos. It's lovely and surprisingly quite similar in many ways to Mary's dress. Very nice to see these two ladies enjoying each others company, and their husbands doing the same as well.

Both dresses are gorgeous and both ladies look fabulous. Mary’s dress looks so much better with the dark lining but ssssshhhh I think I might just prefer Maxima’s dress 😀

  4. CP Mary looks splendid, personally I just love her yellow shoes more than the design of her gown regardless she looks splendid. Her makeup and hair look good, subtle, not competiting with the gown. Her earrings look lovely.
Queen Maxima from what I can see looks fabulous. The pearl necklace and earrings against the black off the shoulder gown, marvellous choice. Hopefully we will get a better look at what she wore at a later date.

Yes, lovely choices from both ladies. The Temperley gown that CPM is wearing is one of her best. I’m happy to see her repeating it here. (V.M.)

I'm just curious with the lovely events we are seeing this week. What language do they all use? Is it English?

    1. Yes, I believe English is their shared language. I was in the Netherlands for weeks and only met one person who didn't speak at least some English, which was great because I struggle with Dutch, lol.

I'd asked this question years ago on this site. But since then I've also discovered answers to my question from other sources. In the majority of cases it is English as all (or almost all) Western European Royalty are fully fluent in English, thanks in no small part to their national education systems teaching compulsory English in schools from a very young age. When smaller groups get together from a region of similar national language, they may speak another common language (such as the Nordic countries, or Latin language speakers and sometimes French speakers such as the Belgian Royals when in the DRC and Queen Maxima when in Western Africa).

English is the main language, but I can assure you that in the Scandivinian countries others languages are spoken as well.
I guess Royals in particular are fluent in some languages since they very often come together from different nations or pay official visit abroad.
I myself had to learn some Norwegian and Danish as I often fly there for work and I happen to spend a few days in these countries before flying back home according to my schedule.

    5. English is the language of conversation amongst them, yes. When Scandinavian Royals (Danish, Swedish, Norwegian) meet, it might be that they occasionally use their own languages as far as possible because they have much common ground within them, but in general English is always the language of conversation within international royal circles (also including Japan, then).

As far as the languages are concerned, REIGNING royal families all have nannies and very often English-speaking, sometimes French-speaking, so that their linguistic skills are not dependent on their school system. Remember, the Cambridge children have a Spanish nanny, which is a clever move, as the Spanish language has become a very important communication vehicle.

@Anon 9:13 The Belgian Royals their mother tongue has been French for years. It is only the later generations that became more fluent in Dutch. CP Elisabeth will be the first monarch who speaks Dutch without an accent and so are her brothers and sister. They all went to Dutch speaking schools in Brussels. Until now higher education is in English for the 2 eldest children. Although Belgium is a country where one speaks 3 different languages (French, Dutch & German) most of the residents speaks better English than German. Depending on the choice of education program the students wish to follow, they start to learn the English language at school from the age of about 13 - 14 years old. But those children are already bilingual then. The Dutch speaking children learn French at the age of about 10 - 11 years old and the French speaking children generally start learning Dutch later. Sometimes French speaking parents choose to send their children to Dutch speaking schools so that the children can learn a second language quicker. Belgium is a little country where a lot of nationalities are living. Business language is often English. We can also look at a wide range of foreign television programs in different languages : French, Dutch, English, German, Italian, Spanish, Arab languages, Turkish. All this has an influence on the language knowledge of the people who are living here.

I would guess the royal families of Belgium and the Netherlands probably speak Dutch amongst each other. Belgium, Monaco and Luxemburg will most likely use French when they meet. As mentioned the Scandinavians can probably speak their own language and they can still understand each other. Not sure though for CP Mary since she isn't a native? Also don't know if Spain is more fluent in French or English?

Spain means all the nation ...you mean the Spanish or the Spanish Royals maybe?
As for the Scandinavian countries, yes, their respective languages have many similarities, so a Dane may happen to understand a Norwegian and also the other way round.
Danish has a sort of odd pronunciation.
Swedish is way different but I guess the Swedish can catch the meaning of conversations both in Norwegian and Danish.

  8. I like both dresses (Mary´s and Maxima´s) but at the same time feel that black is a depressing choice for this time of the year.

A great dress for her, the black underneath is better than the natural. Looks like she shortened it into midi length- it improves it. Love the pop of color from her fab shoes.

Oh, this is just flat out perfect! I liked the dress as a formal, long gown but I like re-styled, shorter version even more. It also looks like CP Mary might have had the dress re-lined too--the original lining was a nude shade but I like this darker lining better too. The bright yellow heels are the perfect pop of color! She looks fabulous. Queen Maxima looks wonderful too--those pearls are gorgeous!

Mary and Maxima both in boat-neck black dresses, yet, looking so different.
I love Mary's look from head to toe. The dress's style looks interesting and yellow shoes were suprising but fitting choice to enliven her attire. Also lovely hairstyle and makeup.
Maxima with her pearl necklace, soft updo and simple black dress.

Mary's hairstyle from the side. She's in really good shape and looking so elegant and pretty. Hard to believe she's 50, she looks at least a decade younger.

This is the best combo dress + shoes among Mary's evening gowns IMO.
I just adore these MB yellow pumps and the beautiful contrast they make with the sophisticated black gown.
The tulle and lace overlay is to die for.
    Maxima is splendid as well.

I don't think this dress is a good choice for someone with an upper body like Mary's. IMO the dress does nothing for her. It suits a more feminine shape.

What is a more feminine Type? I don’t see anything masculine about her body, face or fashion style, in my opinion she has a very healthy looking physique, it looks like she is no stranger to exercise and her figure and posture are very close to ideal.

I do not get what you mean by feminine shape.
Mary has an extremely well proportioned body, she is in great shape and toned with all the curves in the right places.
      She looks healthy and joyous.
I bet there is a balanced diet and workout behind this fabulous look.

You can improve your looks a lot with the right exercise and diet but there are limits to how much you can change your inherent body type.
