The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and the Los Padres polo team hosted a charity polo match aiming to raise money for several local charities, including Foodback Santa Barbara County, Heal the Ocean and CALM4kids, which tackle hunger, and work for the environment and mental health. The Duke’s team Los Padres won the match. The tournament took place at the Santa Barbara Polo Club, and this became the first tournament played in front of an audience since the start of the pandemic.

The look has something wrong I can not find it . It could be the skirt or the belt ? They look like artest or actors more than royals .
ReplyDeleteShe is well dressed for their Netflix show - Keeping Up With The Sussexs.
DeleteAmerican but trying to look Posh British

She looks like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman
DeleteUntil I realised her hair was loose, I thought she was looking like the Duchess of Windsor!
DeleteI can see what is wrong: dressed like Julia roberts, pretending she is someone special, the other girlfriends/wives are not in the 'close up', but she has to be, total bs from start to finish. Hope she caves and speaks with her Father before he passes, he gave her a good life, which she turned into a terrible upbringing, poor, etc etc. I lived a poor life, I know what it is, and it's not attending private schools, or touring europe, or anything else she did on her Dads dime. Traci
DeleteThe dutchess looks great. Especially her hair is beautiful. I do nor care about those wide shorts, but on her they look good. I'm so old that for me those shorts have been in fashion too many times 😁. Just me

ReplyDeleteMeghan looks elegant. Very well chosen pieces that suit her—reminded me of Audrey Hepburn in the first scene of Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
ReplyDeleteI had a similar, however slightly different idea, but also Holywood movie: The polo-match in "Pretty Woman" with Julia Roberts. Clearly channels that one, too.
DeleteTotally agree with you and the comment of DSC. It's "Pretty woman's breakfast at Tiffany's". Normally it is unusual that women do wear hats at a polo match as it is not a race like Ascot or Epsom. The dress code is more informal. So she is complety overdressed for the occasion.
DeleteThis particular club does have a recommended dress code which suggests hats for ladies. Meghan is perfectly dressed for this location.
DeleteSo she wasn’t properly dressed all the other times she was photographed watching polo?
DeleteNot necessarily. The style of dress depends on the particular polo club and venue. An invitee to this event at the Santa Barbara Polo club posted her invitation online (it was swiftly removed) and the invitation stated that ladies wear hats. Other polo matches in England show women (including Meghan in the past) not wearing hats. The Santa Barbara match might have been a special event. Basically, it just depends on where you are.
DeleteI really don't like these baggy shorts. And i find the big hat a little too much but i dont know if the event requer it like they do in Britain.
ReplyDeleteIn addition to club's dress code broad-brimmed hats like that are often worn as protection from the sun.
DeleteReally, I can't like this. Nothing fits together, high heels, a capeline and shorts at a polo match?
ReplyDeleteEverything fits <3
DeleteLove the entire outfit, although I would preferred a more chunky shoe. She looks lovely!
ReplyDeleteCherry
Yes, I agree. The sky-high heels look way too formal here. I could see a wedge, or a block heel instead. (V.M.)
DeleteImho chunky shoes would have made her already thin ankles look overwhelming thin. She is better off with delicate heels. Abby
DeleteThey both look lovely.
ReplyDelete@ Anonymous 24/5/22 15:27
DeleteAnd they seem to be enjoying themselves. Glad to see them moving on with their married/family life even though they have the force of 'hate' against them.
Happy continuation to them both.
Meghan looks good in that hat and blouse and if she wore skirt longer length instead of shorts it would have been perfect look.
ReplyDeleteAva
Yes, I think so too: blouse, hat, red lipstick and shoes build a coherent (even if somewhat too vamp-like) image, but the shorts simply do not fit in. Also, but not only because of the length. (-Ann)
DeleteThe shorts were an extremely smart choice. Have you ever been to polo? The wind can come up on that wide open space and blow your skirt straight up to your neck. Dressy shorts are a brilliant prevention.
DeleteIt's a great outfit and the skirt is very sportive as well. But high heels for a sportsevent is a bit strange, but maybe Americans dress like that for a pologame? Although this site has "royals " in its name, the Sussexes are not royals any more but nobility
ReplyDeletePrince Harry is still a prince, therefore a royal, just because you say he isn't, doesn't make it so.
Delete@ Thanks a lot for that information about their titles or non titles.
DeleteMeghan and Harry are royal. They are no longer using or identified by their HRH titles but they have not been removed. That would require an official action from the Queen to issue a letters patent, which she has not done. Technically, Meghan is still HRH Princess Henry (like Marie-Christine who is married to Prince Michael and is HRH Princess Michael) and HRH Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.
DeleteHarry is a Royal by birth. He made the choice to step away from his life. She married him, she has a title by marriage, no more, no less and creates constant angst within her family and his. Sad situation all the way around, when they could have had a pleasant life without all the angst and lies, and non-issues that were created to give credence to their complaints. Funny how they still 'trade' or use their titles to get vip status, or in order to make money. Seems rather tacky. Jana
DeleteNot sure of the point in pointing out an obvious fact that Meghan gained her titles from marriage. Just like the former Kate Middleton, Sophie Rhys-Jones and Sarah Ferguson, all commoners, Meghan became Her Royal Highness with associated titles when she married. The lies that we’re propagated about Harry and Meghan in the British press were relentless and abusive. Tabloids pay “sources” in cash for these stories. The greed of those “sources” was never going to stop. I particularly remember a ridiculous story about a copper tub. And Meghan being vilified for touching her stomach when her baby kicked and the contrasting approval Kate received when she did the same. Harry and Meghan identified a deep well of racial (she is black) and national (she is American) hatred against Meghan that will never change—no matter what she says or does. Every story in a large segment of the UK press will be slanted against them to feed that hatred and please those readers. They rightly said “no” and moved. In spite of this move, the Queen has been clear, publicly, that both are still “much loved members” of the royal family.
DeleteWell said, Jana! Right on all points.
DeleteMeghan
Meghan's outfit would have been perfect with long flared white pants instead of the shorts, or a white midi skirt. Lips are too red. On the last picture one can see a lady just behind her with about the same blouse or dress and a hat in straw with a black satin band. I think such a hat goes better for a polo match than Meghan's hat.
ReplyDeleteAnon 17.15 That's Abigail Spencer, she looked fabulous. Gorgeous dress and hat.
DeleteThis looks like a costume. If I had no idea what these pictures were from, I'd say they were from a movie.
ReplyDeleteChel
Netflix maybe?
DeleteShe looks lovely but it gives me an acting feel,
Mabel
Her makeup is pretty, as is her hair. I feel like the hat ruins it for me. Like it sits awkwardly on her head and is in the way of her moving normally. Could just be that she doesn't wear them often enough to get used to it. Could be the brim is too large. Idk.
ReplyDeleteOverall she looks good but the hat makes me want to hunch my shoulders for some strange reason.
Paula
From the waist up she is flawless. She is very beautiful and has amazing hair.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful and fun outfit. Meghan looks very nice here. -Siri
ReplyDeleteI think she looks fantastic, sophisticated, but not over the top, although I agree with Ava, a white skirt tailored around the middle and flared volume at the hips just reaching below the knee would have been perfection.
ReplyDeleteMuch too much
ReplyDeleteSomeone else commented it looks like she is in a movie set, sad that the rest of the men, besides Henry all have sour looks on their faces. It really was their time to shine after a good hard game. Cali
ReplyDelete"But what about Breakfast at Tiffany's?"... I don't usually like her style, but this I love. It's classic with a fun twist.
ReplyDeleteThe darker lipstick and hairstyle suit her wonderfully, as does the Audrey Hepburn hat shape, which I don't think she ever tried as a royal. She went with smaller hats then, but I can see now that it's actually wide+brief hats that suit her perfectly.
I think she looked very good.
ReplyDeleteI think the Duchess is correctly dressed for the occasion. Smart but not over the top.
ReplyDeleteI spent one year of my working life in America. I was suprised how much women wear shorts and of course, trainers.
The photos bring back memories of a similar setting where Princess Diana presents Prince Charles with a trophy after a polo match.

Meghan Markle certainly does not have the class of Audrey Hepburn nor that of the Duchess of Windsor, both were very elegant ladies. The shorts together with the high heels look terrible.
ReplyDelete🌞
Oh, I love it.
ReplyDeleteShe's always playing a part. Those high heels with the culottes/shorts to watch a polo match? The red red lips and her whole demeanor is very studied.
ReplyDeleteShe and her friend looked completely out of place with their hats. Nobody else was dressed like that. She didn’t wear a hat when told to do so with TQ and now wears one in America for polo?
ReplyDeletePal
There are three other women in hats just in the few photos posted here. Clearly women in Santa Barbara wear hats at Polo matches. Maybe it's because of the sun?
DeleteI should have said headpiece. Meghan’s hat was not meant to protect her from the Sun. And the other two occasions in which she was photographed at polo she wasn’t wearing a hat but ie was sunny so definitely that’s not the factor behind her choice.
DeletePal
She looks radiant and happy. Lovely!
ReplyDelete-B.
Best comment of the day...keeping up with the Suxxeses. Lol, right on. Gaudy and Hollywood want to be, courtesy of Netflix.
ReplyDeleteThe Duchess looks stylish and chic. I love the blouse, very feminine. I don't like the shorts at all as stated by others a skirt would have looked better, but that is my personal taste. The hat is lovely, but Ascot would be more appropriate wear. I like the earrings and subtle necklace. Her companion Abigail Spencer, looked fabulous, her b/white polka dot dress and straw hat looked stunning. I loved her outfit.
ReplyDeleteInteresting how people assume that anything “pretending’ to be glamorous must be an attempt at copying the Brits. There are a few hundred million people living the other side of the Atlantic for a few hundred years who certainly know (without some gallery comments) what a Polo event looks like. There is in fact glamour outside Europe. Try to remember that.
ReplyDeleteBeyond the biased opinions, I think the Duchess (like it or not, it’s not up to you, she is a duchess’) looks great. It’s a fresh combination of Old World meets New World. I think Meghan has a style of her own and I believe she should not give it up.
Excellent assessment, Anonymous 2:47. Thank you.
DeleteMeghan's hair and make-up look fantastic. I like her hat but it seem slightly too formal for the rest of her outfit. Abigail Spencer looks great.
ReplyDeleteIt is very common to see a wide range of outfits at a polo match.
E.B.B.
Don't know if there is a dress code for ladies at a polo match.
ReplyDeleteAnd if there is, maybe it is not the same in America as what it is in the U.K.
There is a photo of the Princess of Wales and Prince Charles at a polo match where she is wearing shorts but they go just below the knee; they are loose but not baggy. I think in those days they were called 'pedal pushers'.
@anonymous 02:47, fully agree with you. I have rarely seen comments where a fashion choice is an opportunity to show prejudice against a country, but alas!! it happens when Meghan shows up. Disagreeing on fashion is healthy and normal, but the petty and nasty comments are just that.

head: british upper-class
ReplyDeletedress: pretty woman ( I couldn't say on what it remindes me, but someone came up with this, and yes, that's it)
doesn't fit together but I guess it is, what Netflix wants to see for their trash soap opera.
I like her hairstyle.
