Queen Elizabeth II did not attend the opening of Parliament amid ongoing mobility issues. In the monarch's absence, The Prince of Wales took on the head of state's major constitutional duty. The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall and The Duke of Cambridge attended the State Opening of Parliament at the House of Lords. The Prince of Wales read the Queen's Speech on behalf of his mother.
The Duke of Cambridge attended the event as a Counsellor of State – a senior member of the royal family who is able to act on behalf of the monarch. The State Opening of Parliament is a ceremony filled with historical ritual and symbolic significance for the governance of UK.
Beautiful hat, and coat worn by the DoC during the opening of Parliament by PC. However, to me the print on the dress is too prominent/big and puts wrong emphasis; a vertical print might have been better.

embellishments to large, hat too sporty, and shoes should have been all navy, or all black, not those two-toned things she wore. rachel
ReplyDeleteNice, appropriately sober outfit for the Duchess of Cornwall. Like tha hat, adn though the shoes are two tone, I think they match
ReplyDeletePrince Charles looks very old all of a sudden. He must be he very emotional now that he is sitting on his mother's throne. Also Prince William must have a lot that is going through his mind. On picture N° 6 one can see it when he is looking at his father.
ReplyDeleteOn another site it was reported that Prince Charles sat in the chair formerly used by Prince Phillip. I am sure Prince William and Prince Charles were pondering the past and the future. I thought the Duchess looked lovely but I agree with those who wished her shoes had been all navy or all black. I am sure the Queen was disappointed that she was unable to attend.

As I wrote in another post, I think they are all feeling the pressure and getting a taste of the reality of what their lives will become, whether sooner or later. I think their plans and schedules are evolving/adapting day to day right now. Tough situation. I read online that Prince Charles was made 'de facto' Regent for todays event only.

DeleteMy thoughts exactly.
This is a tough situation and they all seem to feel the pressure of the events.
I miss Queen Elizabeth reassuring presence more than ever.
Je croyais que Camilla allait nous étonner dans une nouvelle tenue pour l'occasion mais je remarque que ce n'est point le cas ainsi que le chapeau jusqu'aux chaussures bicolores !
ReplyDeleteWrong hat and wrong shoes. - Anne

The first thing went through my mind with the photos of this ceremony was I was seeing the future. I would imagine this was emotionally difficult for Charles, Camilla, and William--probably everyone involved since the majority of the British public have always only known Queen Elizabeth on the throne. In terms of fashion--the Duchess fresh and elegant in her navy and white ensemble.

Camilla looks wonderfull, cannot see any detail wrong,

I totally agree!
DeleteI also agree. She is perfectly dressed in all respects for the event and occasion.

This made me cry, QE is the only Queen I have ever known, today sent home the message that this is soon to change. God Bless and God save the Queen.
ReplyDeleteI'm getting tired with this charade of continuing with every member of the royal family here, there and everywhere, and now guys sitting next to a crown, when the head of state cannot do her job anymore. It's rather stupid and laughable. There is no need to reach the 75 years on the throne, and forcing it artificially is blah. A crown attending on a cushion is a sad joke, because it should be the head of state. Yes, the crown is beautiful, but this should be stopped. And Camilla might do well getting a new pair of shoes. - Ellie
ReplyDeleteCondivido.
DeleteE aggiungo che non mi abituerò mai all'idea di Camilla regina.
You are sounding quite anti-royal and pro-republican. Well, you are certainly entitled to your opinion, but you also seem to have no idea about the many traditions of European Monarchies. No one "forces" the Queen to reach 75 years on the throne. In fact, people are happy that she made it to her 70 years as queen. Most people are aware of the fact that she may not be with us for very much longer. As for the crown being prominently placed on a table - well, this event was more or less unprecedented and had to be improvised on many levels. Other monarchies have the crown placed nearby as well, when executing highly official, ceremonial duties (the Dutch, for example, the Swedish on occasion, too). Nothing to be overly annoyed about, unless you are a staunch republican. But then you might be wrong on this blog anyway.
DeleteShe will die on the throne. Like her father and other Kings/Queens before her. Nobody in her line ever abdicated except one. And that was to marry the woman he wanted to. Other monarchies abdicate for health reasons. I don't know if that wasn't a new thing for them also. This one does not. Maybe a precedent will be set one day for that. But not with this Queen. I do not think it will happen. This is what she was raised to do. Victoria didn't do a lot of engagements after Albert's death. She mourned him for a long time. Was never really the same. But did not abdicate. Just my two cents. We will see what happens when she gets on down the road a bit. But this is her job. She is allowed some sick time. Allie
Deletenasty nasty comments. HMTQ is not incapable of undertaking her duties, in fact, she is as busy as ever with engagements, virtually. the reason for her absence is simply because of mobility issue. had this event could be done virtually, she would have done it. but it is not, and her doctors also advised against it.
DeleteCharles and William look good;as they both attend a very significant opening of Parliament.Camilla's clothes and hat look fine;I am not sure what she has done too her hair it looks too fluffy;and not natural,if it was a little more flat it would be fine.(Tabby)
ReplyDeleteNon mi piace nulla dell'outfit scelto da Camilla, soprattutto il cappello. Chissà William che avrà pensato in questo giorno pieno di emozioni.
ReplyDeleteCamilla's outfit looks lovely. The combination of pearl choker and pearl earrings are a great choice. The Navy dress looks smart and elegant, the only thing I would change are the shoes, Navy bag, Navy shoes, I quite like two tone, but wouldn't choose black. Love her bag. She looks very chic.
ReplyDeleteI agree, navy shoes would have been a better choice. Overall though, D. Camilla’s outfit has some personality without detracting from the business of the day. (V.M.)
