On May 2, 2022, on the first day of their three-day state visit to Greece, King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium attended a state dinner in Athens, held in honour of them and hosted by the President of Greece Katerina Sakellaropoulou and Mr Pavlos Kotsonis.
Costarellos Eva floral french tulle gown
Once again, perhaps she’s a bit overdressed? She looks awfully pale in this outfit. It’s definitely not one of her best looks. (V.M.)
ReplyDeleteMathilde's gown is beautiful and she doesn’t look awfully pale. But being a blue-eyed blonde with fair skin, blue or turquoise would be more flattering than sage green.
DeleteYes, since the dresscode was obviously business suit and cocktail dress, she seems to be a tad overdressed, although that impression could be due to the fact that the Greek president looks awful with her bad posture and grumpy expression.
Mathilde's dress looks nice when she is standing face-on such as in the second photo, but when you see it from behind, there's a bit too much going on and it looks very fussy. I like the style of dress on the model and would have preferred Mathilde to wear that with perhaps a shawl or wrap made of the embroidered tulle instead of the cape and the added tulle all around the skirt. The cape makes it look dowdy.
ReplyDeleteI like the colour and style of the Greek President's dress.

My thoughts exactly regarding the cape. The dress looks wonderful without it but loses its appeal with the cape. I understand that Mathilde probably added the cape for modesty but it unfortunately covers the intricate design of the bodice and obscures the lovely silhouette. The result is a rather shapeless sea of fabric.
DeleteI must say however, that the dress probably wouldn´t have looked much better on Mathilde even without the cape. It´s not right for her body type anyway. She looks best in dresses with lower waistlines, or better yet - no clearly marked waistline at all (but still fitted!).
Anyone know what the yellow thing around her wrist is? Is it a bracelet??
@Vanessa: I agree completely that the original dress would not have looked that nice even without the cape on Mathilde; I just didn't say it because we all know by now that she suits lower waisted (or no waisted) dresses much better, and the original design clearly isn't that. You can see that the dress has been reworked for her and there's more fabric added everywhere. The elegance of the original gown is gone.

Queen Mathilde looks beautiful even if her gown doesn't do her justice. From the waist down it is very nice, but the bodice and the capelet are a bit too much of a good thing. I love her earrings and the brooch worn in her hair. The bracelet does not match the dress, in my opinion. Although it was the gentlemanly thing to do, I thought King Philippe's gesture of assisting the Queen up the stairs was very sweet. I think the president's red gown is very pretty. She seemed less than impressed with the event up to that point, but seemed in better spirits when toasting the Queen.

Jolie robe mais sans la cape. Belle Mathilde
ReplyDeleteI think it was nice that Queen Matilda chose a Greek fashion designer Christos Costarellos for her robe at the state dinner. From what I have read, it appears he (the designer) was born in Germany.
DeleteHis parents or at least his father was Greek.
His father was a tailor and his mother a seamstress. He studied in Greece and London.
In less than 20 years, he has created an empire of about 50 outlets around the world.
He became well known when Carrie Symons wore one of his creations as her wedding dress for her marriage to Boris Johnston, the British prime minister, last year (2021).
The wedding dress of Costarellos that Carrie Symons wore normally retails at £2,830 but she paid only £45,as she rented it for the day from a dress hire company in London.
He got a lot of free international publicity thanks to this wedding dress.
Carlos Costarellos seems to be discreet with his private life as there is very little one can find about him on the net.
This dress looks better without cape and and requires a really slim figure (as the model in the picture). Mathilde exaggerated it again. Too many embellishments, too much embroidery, too much chiffon. In the first two pictures, Mathilde looks like she's wearing a draped window curtain over her dress. Mrs. Sakellaropoulou's dress is too short and too shiny, but to excuse her , she is a politician and has to deal with the complex political issues of her country - Queen Mathilde does not have this tasks, she has more time and resources to use in fashion, Stephanie
ReplyDeleteI know the dress code was suits for men and cocktail dress for the women but Mathilde's gown is a bit more a cocktail dress. The President of Greece is wearing a red dress in satin or silk cocktail like dress but there is not much else to say other than to say its...unfortunate. But the 2 looks are quite different. I do really like Mathilde's gown and hope she wears it for another occasion. Janet
ReplyDeleteDresscode cocktail used to be a short dress in luxury fabrics like the President is wearing.
DeleteThis is a State Dinner. She is a Queen. How can she be overdressed? Lizzie
ReplyDeleteTotally agree ...

Delete"Queen" is her title, her gown is her taste in outfit.

DeleteTotally agree with you Lizzie. When I'm reading the pros and the contras on this blog lately concerning QM, I must agree partly with Virginia's yesterday comments too. It looks like there is a category of people who will always have their criticism ready when it concerns QM. It started with the designs the house of Natan made for her. Now it is a Greek designer and I took the time to enumerate the comments I read here : overdressed---requires a slim figure--- exaggerated---not real figure flattering---old fashion---outdated---old lady---she looks awfully pale. All these comments are coming from different people If that we may not call bashing someone I don't understand it anymore.
@Anonym 15:30 , it is not whom we like but what do they wear . I personally don't like many outfits royalties are wearing but I can not say I don't like person who is wearing them .

DeleteIf you don't like a dress or gown O.K. just say it. But it is the way it has been said, if you always refers to body parts or appearance of the person whose outfit is discussed than it is bashing.
The diamond earrings are gorgeous. I saw somewhere the Queen had a diamond brooch in the back of her hair as a ornament. Her hair up style looks terrific. The gold cuff on her wrist appears out of place with the rest of her jewels. There is a lot going on with this gown, busy fabric, capelet. Regardless the Queen looks lovely.
ReplyDeleteHer hair and makeup look great.
ReplyDeleteThe dress is interesting but unfortunately it's not real figure flattering thru the middle.

Wonderfull dress!
ReplyDeleteShe really is the Queen!

I don't like. I feel it's to old fashion, not even vintage. Just outdatet and old lady. Like it better without the cape, but still no.
ReplyDeleteI feel the Queen looks serene, lovely, though a little tired. The gown itself is lovely, though I would have traded the jacket for long softly billowy sleeves. He porcelain skin tone, compliments the color of the gown quiet well.
ReplyDeletePresident of Greece Katerina Sakellaropoulou outfit is rather harsh, and she stands with legs apart, which seems odd. Mr Pavlos Kotsonis (see second photo) needs his pants altered, as they look at the bottom by the shoes, as if they are some some sort of sport pant with elastic at the bottom rather than traditional suit trousers. Both the Queen and King wore appropriate outfits for the occasion. Annie
Wow ! Queen Mathilde looks wonderful in her evening gown. The designer is Greek born in Germany. The soft green, the transparency of this look suits her very well. She also wears a new bracelet. Her diamond earrings are the cherry on the cake.
ReplyDeleteNice dress, weird cape
ReplyDeleteMaybe without the capelet (or a capelet without any embroidery) I would have like it, but now it's just too much. QM's hair and make-up are spot on, but the bracelet doesn't look nice where the earrings do.
ReplyDeleteMCS
Her face make up look nice and I love her earrings but not her evening gown.

These dresscodes nowadays! A galadinner with normal suits for the men, the President wearing a cocktaildress and Mathilde wearing a gala gown. The dress, however good on Mathilde, is not my taste. But a nice gesture that's she is wearing a dress of a Greek designer.

ReplyDeleteLove this dress.
ReplyDeleteLove Q Mathilde.
Don't love this dress as altered for her.
I'd be happy to share styling suggestions if she ever asked me.:-) Rather than covering the lovely bodice embroidery with more embroidered fabric, I'd have suggested a flutter sleeve, perhaps. Throwing more fabric over the dress did it and her no favours. As shown here, it's too much fabric, overall, whereas the alterations needed a stronger edit.
I feel that Q Mathilde would benefit from another set of eyes to help her choose, personalize and customize ensembles. At least, there's no oversize floral print action, which tends to overwhelm her.
I do love the brooch as hair ornament.

I think this dress is beautiful, and I understand that she added the cape to make it more modest to fit her style, unfortunately the little cape spoils the whole effect. It does have lots of fabric and being so tall it makes her very voluminous. I don’t think is a fail, just not ideal. The president’s dress is not terrible, but again not the right choice for her figure, and the shiny fabric looks too snug around the middle, I hesitate to judge her by one picture, when thousands of pictures are being taken one can look unflattering on some.
ReplyDeleteCherry
That is a much better outfit than the first one. However I think it makes her look older. Like her hairstyle!
