On March 29, 2022, a service of thanksgiving for the life of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh took place at Westminster Abbey and was attended by members of the British Royal Family. The Duke of Edinburgh passed away at the age of 99 at Windsor Castle in April 2021. His funeral took place at St George’s Chapel, Windsor.
Royals from across Europe attended the memorial service, including King Felipe and Queen Letizia, King Willem-Alexander, Queen Maxima and Princess Beatrix, Queen Margrethe, King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia, King Philippe and Queen Mathilde, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa, Prince Albert, Queen Anne-Marie, Prince Pavlos and Princess Marie-Chantal, Crown Princess Margaret and Prince Radu Duda.
Prince Philip was related to multiple Royal Families across Europe, through his lineage to Queen Victoria who was his great-great grandmother.
p.s.: Andrew si e Harry no, peccato!
Voleva riprendere Lady Diana in stile anni 80. La scelta del verde è legata alla sfumatura di tale colore detta “duke of Edinburgh”.
DeleteI totally agree with you, anyway: Catherine is superb.
The ladies in Philip's green livery all looked great. There is one quibble. Queen Letizia has that identical style of green dress in grey which she has worn many, many times (see Asturias October of 2019). She does not look to Kate for inspiration. She takes far more risks, has a more varied wardrobe, dresses to suit the theme of the day (like today) and has never been accused of being frumpy.

Green is the new black..
ReplyDeleteApparently, it was in honor of Prince Philip. Green was the color of his regiment or something like that.
DeleteI like that they wore green, navy, gray etc. and not only black; after all, it´s a memorial, not a funeral.
DeleteForest green is the official colour of Prince Phillips livery. Attendees chose to honour him by wearing that colour.
Delete- Anon 9:13
They wore green because to honor the Duke. Edinburgh green
DeleteWearing green was in tribute to DOE. The colour, known as “Edinburgh Green”, was Philip’s official livery colour. The duke was well known for his love of the colour.

ReplyDeleteCatherine, Letizia and Eugenie are so elegant and ladylike. But of course all thee other ladies look good, too.
ReplyDeleteLittle Charlotte is growing more and more pretty; and so does young Lady Louise.
I agree, Coralie, but I would add Princess Eugenie to your list. I think she looked fabulous. Her hat with netting was superb.
DeleteDebra, I must admit I don't like Beatrice shoes in combination with this dress and coat. But anyway she looks good, that's true.
DeleteDebra, It was not Eugenie who wore a hat with netting, it was Beatrice, the one who Coralie didnt like the combo of dress and coat with the shoes.
DeleteThank you for focusing on the positivity in the Abbey. It is a credit to Prince Philip that people were there, focusing on his life.
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks to our moderator for the superb photos.
DeleteAn attendance full of honour from both, the immediate and extended members of the Royal family including their families, and the Royal houses of Europe. Sombre elegance is in abundance without need to make any individual observances.
ReplyDeleteA lovely memorial tribute to Prince Phillip; God bless the Queen for her strength and fortitude.

Well said!
DeleteMabel
My favorite look on this occasion is the one of Princess Beatrice. Love her outfit, the makeup and hair.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I am in love with Marie Chantal’s petite Kelly bag..!
Princess Beatrice looked radiant, even when she was crying. She has truly blossomed from marriage and motherhood.
DeleteThank you for showing picture of other Royals there. I knew they attended, but the DM etc weren't showing their pictures!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely showing by everyone. It was nice to see the children, they are all growing up so fast.
ReplyDeleteChel
ReplyDeleteIts easy to forget the man behind the role. But, Philip was many things to family, immediate and extended. To see so many royals from around the world, come and celebrate a life fully lived was a privilege. HMQ I hope to comfort from that.
Wishing HMQ continued strength and good health.
Maxima - that´s way too dramatic.
ReplyDeleteMaria-Teresa - too casual.
I like what Zara is wearing. And the various green coats on display, Silvia and Beatrix look very nice too. Also, Louise - absolutely lovely.
Maxima almost didn't wear any of her winter coats this year, always capes. She has capes in different colors.
DeleteI do not agree that Maria-Teresa is dressed too casual. The fabric of her short black coat seems to be very pretty. She always wear a black pair of trousers and low heels. Maybe a little hat (pill-box type) would have been nice. If Sylvia did not have worn a big black hat, she would have been too casual too. She is wearing a kind of big woolen scarf on her shoulders.
And talking of hats, I don't think the Duchess of Gloucester made a good choice with her hat, which is unusual for her. Normally she get her dress code right.
DeleteAlways possible to make not so positive comments, mine is maybe among those, I would say that Maxima's eye makeup is too heavy. It ages her.
DeleteR.I.P to The Duke of Edinburgh and to All of the Royal Families, my deepest of condolences on all of Our loss.
ReplyDeleteBeaucoup de femmes élégantes dans la couleur noire ; nous remarquons quelques touches de vert qui comme suggéré précédemment pourrait être le nouveau noir !
ReplyDeleteThe York princesses and the Duchess of Cambridge are the standouts so far. Very lovely and elegant, the three of them.
ReplyDeleteI cannot agree about the York princesses since I don't like the way they dress on almost any occasion. Duchess of Cambridge : the dress is nice but the thin fabric needed a coat or a little jacket. The hat is too dramatic.
DeleteLovely, emotional event.
ReplyDeleteSartorial highlights: Catherine looks very dignified. Beatrice and Eugenie both knocked it out of the parl. Lady Sarah Chatto and the Countess of Wessex were both very elegant. Maxima looks lovely.
Mary
Kate muy antigua, Máxima exagerada,
ReplyDeleteLa reina Isabel, Camila , Ana , Beatriz , Letizia perfectas . Las mujeres de negro demasiado severas.
Where are Harry and Meghan??
ReplyDeleteIsn't he Prince Philip grandson?
Mimi
Their choice to attend or not to attend is their business.
DeleteIf there is a "those who did not attend" list, I think the Duchess of York should be on the list. Haven't seen her in any of the photos.
In a nut shell, Britain won't allow Harry to pay for his own security and won't cover the expense of providing him with security. It is my understanding that "they" are trying to work it out. But, in the mean time, Harry doesn't want to travel to Britain - unless absolutely necessary - until it is worked out. He attended the funeral "at his risk" so to speak but chose not to attend this memorial. It's been reported that hopefully something will be worked out by the time the Queen's Jubilee events get into full swing. Personally, the thing I don't understand is, if he's willing to pay for it out of his own pocket - and understand, this is not the crown's money but his own money that he has earned or was left to him from Diana's personal money - why not let him pay for his own security?
DeleteMimi...it was quite obvious wasn't it? So sad that Harry no longer is a part of the Royal family...at his own choosing. I think he will regret it some day. Who knows about Ms. Markle. Families are not important to her anyway. Ann B
DeleteHe apparently decided not to attend as there has been nbo agreement on security arrangements when he is in the UK. Very sad
Delete@Ann B It is speculation to say that family is not important to Meghan. The issues with her family are her business and should have remained that way. This is hardly the time to derail this topic with such polarizing opinions. ~d
Deleteto anon 21: 51
DeleteThe British police are not a security agency that can be hired by someone. The police have different roles and their men would be missing in other places. How do you imagine that? Harry calls: "Hey, you know my wife and I are going to Britain this week, get me a security team. My accountant will pay the bill."
Interesting that the queen's grandchildren Beatrice, Eugenie, Louise, Zara, Peter can do it without security.
In addition, it turned out that Harry had no intention of paying for protection at all, his lawyers did pull it out only when the public was informed that he had sued the British Home Office.
Daniela
Anonymous, the rest of the royal grandchildren did not marry Megan Markle and leave the royal family. The hate and vitriol aimed at Harry and his wife is downright scary. Pretty sure Harry has a valid reason to want, and need, security.
DeleteMany people could not attend memorial services because they live too far away and had to watch a via a link, He was at the funeral. That was most important.
DeleteThe BM has lost all reason. He turned his back on us!! Where is he? Strip him of his titles!! Why doesn't he come home? Leave your wife!...and attend alone.
The police are not for sale...yet they are there at football, cricket and concerts owned by private people who use them for free security, crowd control and intelligence for potential trouble makers.
At "00:35" Its not much different than what the situation is now with the royal family. Police/security is pulled away from their "regular" assignments now to protect royal members. But instead of tax payer's money to pay them Harry wants to pay it. I would think they'd be grateful since so many complain about the royal using too much tax payer's money.
DeleteAlso the security arrangements in place were fine for several European monarchs and other dignitaries so don't know what's so special about Harry's requirements. He was also told that he would be covered by the security for his father when attending these types of family events.
DeleteHis choice - he attended the funeral which was more important IMO.
G
Harry was offered the same protection he received at PP funeral. This is all a ploy by Harry to get his IPP back, that way whatever country he is in, their taxpayers get to foot the bill for his security. He went to Texas (where nearly every citizen owns a gun) and survived. His schtick is getting quite tiresome. The most danger he has in GB is getting a rotten tomato up the side of the head, which he needs. It is a pity that the real Harry has been unmasked, BP's PR team did a great job keeping this manchild's rotten core under wraps.
DeleteLol it is not speculation that family is not important to Meghan; it is quite obvious. The issues with her family are one thing, but then she could never get along with anyone in the BRF either?! Some people do not have nice families, no doubt about it, but if you could not get on with your own family and then can't get on with the BRF either, you know maybe you're the common denominator there and it's actually you who is at fault, as opposed to ALL THE OTHERS.
DeleteAlso, yes, security at the memorial service was good enough for 5 foreign monarchs but not Harry. Of course.
deadeggs, Fergi an the x-wife of Peter Phillips were not there, maybe because they are x-wives.
Deletedeadeggs, the Duchess of York was most certainly not invited. Prince Philip was very angry with her for the scandals she caused and after the divorce, refused to be in the same room with her. The only exceptions he made were for the weddings of Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie.
Delete@Mimi: Well, they had been some rumours, so who knows... The Scarlet Pimpernel and his moll are dispenssable, don't you think?Siv
DeleteTo caune 02:43: Possibly no member of the BRF has been the subject of as much tabloid-fuelled hostility as the Duchess of Cornwall, but she neither whined nor threw tantrums, but went about her duties as the future king's wife with intelligence, grace and discretion. Her attitude has earned her the affection, respect and admiration of her countrymen, to the extent that the Queen herself has acknowledged and thanked her for her work at the side of the Prince of Wales. Prince Harry's wife could have behaved like an adult and taken Camilla's resilience and ability as an example.
DeleteSo glad that his family and others were able to come together to honor Prince Philip.
ReplyDeleteIt is especially lovely to see the Queen wearing her Grima Ruby brooch, a wonderfully meaningful gift from Prince Philip which highlights the Prince’s appreciation of modern design.
Glo
All those wearing complete black outfits (like Queen Maxima, Queen Mathilde or Grandduchess Maria Teresa) are off the mark. This was not a funeral! I very much like that even Queen Letizia or Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands also chose to wear green. Still, apart from all the obvious green, my absolute favourite is the Duchess of Cambridge. This might be the best daytime outfit she*d ever worn.
ReplyDelete@DSC: QMaxima didn't wear a complete black outfit; underneath the cape she wore a grey ensemble and in that respect it isn't any different from the DoCambridge who combined black with white.
DeleteMy thinking exactly! It was not a funeral but a thanksgiving and celebration of his life. Kate and Beatrice were the best dressed in my opinion. The queen looked lovely as well.
Deleteslight correction here. Maxima was not wearing a complete black outfit at all. Her dress was mid grey and there was a lot of dress. It is quite long.
DeleteI cannot speak for the others but Queen Mathilde wore the coat dress she had made for the "Te Deum" to remember the deceased members of the Belgian royal family on February 17 this year. Better to wear that than a coat that is not appropriate at all. On the photo's I see members of the British royal family in black coats too.
DeleteBlack has never been 'just for funerals'. Black is a sign of mourning and of respect for the deceased. Therefore all those who did not attend the funeral - which includes extended family and European Royalty (since nearly all the European royal houses are related to either the queen or Prince Phillip or both through Queen Victoria) - could wear black if they wanted. For them, this Service of Thanksgiving and Remembrance was the equivalent of a funeral for a high ranking family member, but without the remains of the deceased person present.
Delete- Anon 9:13
For a memorial service black is not "a forbidden colour" but allowed as also other dark colours. Naturally different countries have different traditions.
DeleteAnd thanks to 9:13 for explaining "using the black" better than I could - and more thanks to those who explained the use of dark green which was unknown to me.
Margot
Anonymous 29/3/22 23:25 (continued)
DeleteI wish to say sorry. I made a mistake. Found out that Queen Mathilde was wearing a new black coat dress and not the one she had made for the "Te Deum" on February 17 in Belgium. That coat dress was dark navy and fitted better. She could have worn that too.
Queen Elisabeth, Princess Anne, Camilla, Maxima, Letizia and many more, all very stylish and proper for the occassion, and then one Eliza Doolittle, ready for the theatre stage. -Siri
ReplyDeleteSo true.
Deleterachel there was no eliza doolittle and you are being disrespectful for the occasion of the day.
DeleteObviously, we can't comment about every guest, but I do wish to mention Queen Elizabeth's ensemble. She chose a coat and hat of what is being called Edinburgh green trimmed in a berry/burgundy color. The piece de resistance is, of course, the Grima brooch which was gift to her by her Duke. Almost brought me to tears. I am so happy she was able to attend, and I'm sure her anxiety level dropped tremendous. God bless you, Your Majesty.
ReplyDelete@Deabra: Your comment is wonderful and caring. It warms my heart. Bless you too! Siv
DeleteWonderful service to remember Prince Philip, what a great man he was !
ReplyDeleteFashionwise: the first thing I thought when I saw the DOC : Mary Poppins !!
Yes, Titi, I'd exactly the same thought when I saw the black dress with white polka dots and hat the DoC wore yesterday. Like with some of the outfits during the Carribbean tour, I'd the idea I witnessed a costume play.
DeleteThe ceremony must have impressed Queen Elizabeth to see the line up of Royals who came to pay their last respects.
ReplyDeleteWho knows, we should consider that this might also have been the last time the royals gather with Queen Elizabeth. *Regina
DeleteThey are all her relatives and Phillips - related directly through Queen Victoria. So they would all be expected to attend at the most senior level, or send a senior representative. Some of them (Q. Margarethe and her sisters, Queen Sofia and King Carlos of Spain, and King Carl Gustaf to name a few are very close to Q. Elizabeth, like 2nd cousins. And of course the king of Greece, etc.). The one surprise absence for me was the Norwegian royals since King Harald is especially close to the Queen, both through bloodline and as friends. I've no doubt that they were absent with good reason though.
Delete- Anon 9:13
Huh? In what way?
DeleteAnonymous 00:17, the king of Norway was tested positive for coronavirus last week.
DeleteThe King and Queen of Norway were set to attend, but had to cancel after the King became ill with covid.
DeleteKing Harald and Queen Elizabeth are indeed close and share the same great-grandmother, Queen Alexandra. Interesting tidbit: Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norway and Queen Elizabeth, who is named Elizabeth Alexandra Mary, are named after the same Alexandra.
To Anja and Anon 13:32 : Thank you for that info. I didn't know that King Harald had tested positive for COVID. That explains their absence.
Delete- Anon 9:13
Anon 23 45, I do hope you are wrong. Like so many people, I hope and pray that Her Majesty will be able to enjoy the celebrations for her Jubilee at the start of June. Hopefully we will see all the family gather together again at that point.
DeleteAnon 00 17, thank you for that information. I knew that King Harald and Queen Sonja were on the guest list and wondered why they had not been there. The King is second cousin to Queen Elizabeth.
I think the Kings of Sweden and Spain Queen Margrethe and Margareta of Roumania are all her 3rd cousins. The closest relative to Prince Philip is King Felipe who was a first cousin twice removed
AnnieM - Great info, thank you! :)
DeleteJust to add to this, Prince Philip was also Margareta of Romania's first cousin twice removed. He was also her godfather and she has credited him for having been a great support to her when she was at boarding school and later university in the UK.
What a wonderful ceremony to honor a unique and amazing person--the Duke of Edinburgh. The wearing of green to give a nod to Edinburgh green, the color of Prince Philip's livery, was very thoughtful as well as significant. The ladies all looked decorously wonderful. The only thing I saw that made me say "Huh???" was the hat worn by the Duchess of Gloucester--that bright blue was such a contrast to her navy blue outfit that I had to look twice. While Catherine Cambridge is a true standout in elegance I think everyone was at their best today. Queen Elizabeth looked marvelous and she wore her Grima Ruby brooch--a sentimental nod to Prince Philip as it was a gift from him to her in 1966. It was also nice to see some of the older great grandchildren on hand to honor their great grandpapa. Finally, I think Prince Philip would have been honored to see all the foreign royals who came to honor him.
ReplyDeleteThe Duchess of Cambridge was the epitome of elegance and grace, her outfit was outstanding. The silk dress with its high neckline, buttons on one shoulder, elevated the look. The pleated skirt gave shape, suited her beautifully. Loved her pearl drop earrings.
ReplyDeleteQueen Mathilde looked great, loved her pearl choker. Queen Maxima and Letizia looked splendid. I loved what the Princess Royal wore, beautiful coat. The Queen looked divine, her Grima ruby brooch, the perfect choice, stunning. Young Lady Louise looked fabulous, she is a beautiful young lady.
I think Lady Louise is growing into a beautiful woman. There's something ... very refreshing in her. Natural beauty without pounds of makeup, false lashes, piercings and botox lips.
ReplyDeleteShe looks a bit like actress Rosamund Pike or Grace Kelly in her young age.
Stephanie
Agree. Rosamunde Pike!
DeleteHer Majesty looks lovely; I particularly like the lincoln green ;and the fur detail.
ReplyDeleteAll of the royals look good ;great to see so many of them. The Duke of Edinburgh achieved so much in his life.(Tara)
I am a great fan of the Duchess of Cambridge but I felt she was perhaps a little too glamorous for the event today. I thought Lady Louise looked fab, suddenly grown up, lovely and very like the young Princess Elizabeth or Princess Anne. I liked the elegance of the grey outfits worn by Margareta of Romania and Countess Mountbatten
ReplyDeleteI agree with all of it, AnnieM
DeleteEveryone looks quite well dressed for the occasion of celebrating the life of the Queen's husband. The one thing that stood out was the woman with a light blue hat, it seemed out of place. rene
ReplyDeleteThe grandchildren are all lovely and growing so quickly. Louise is a beautiful young woman, and the younger ones have also grown so much.
Zien en gezien worden , voor velen een gevecht tegen de tand des tijds. (Sylvia, Mathilde, Maxima)
ReplyDeleteDmv. pruiken, hoeden, lagen make up moet het nog wat lijken. Kleider machen Leute.
Prinses Anne blijft altijd authentique, Kate altijd smaakvol, Lady Louise verfrissend.
Poekie
DeleteThe green accent in several clothes is a very nice gesture towards former Prince Philip. Mathilde looking very stylish. Belgian royals always wear black at funerals and commemorations. Agree with all compliments about Beatrice. So tastefully dressed and lost weight. Italian influence of husband? Like Kates dress but the hat is much too "frivole" for this event. Letizia could not be better looking in her green fifties coat and lovely petite hat. Máxima in total too much volume :cape as well as enormous grey dress underneath it with belt.
ReplyDeleteAgree with you: Maxima way over the top with the loose bleached hair and the long cape.
DeleteJane
Most adorable: Princess Charlotte, Mia Tindall, Savannah & Isla Phillips! Such sweet little coats and headbands! :)
ReplyDeleteMargareta of Romania looked lovely and elegant, definitely a favourite. Queen Anne-Marie looks lovely and appropriate, in my opinion you can never go wrong with a pillbox. Zara Tindall: lovely and understated.
I also loved Princess Michael of Kent black and white outfit.
I love Princess Beatrice's burgundy headpiece and shoes - lovely and appropriate for the occasion. You can't really see it here but here hair looked fabulous from the back - gorgeous curls!! Princess Eugenie's black floral dress is a lovely & creative choice for a memorial service.
Princess Alexandra's granddaughters Flora Vesterberg and Zenouska Mowatt, though not pictured here, wore very elegant & understated outfits for the occasion, my favourites I've got to say.
Catherine looks marvelous, the dress & hat are stunning and suit her wonderfully, but I wonder if it's not a bit much for a memorial. Might have been better for a different occasion.
What a wonderful service. Absolutely enjoyed it and the late duke of Edinburgh has left a great legacy behind, and a gift that keeps on giving.
ReplyDeleteT
In regards with fashion and clothes it was a wonderful turn-out. My private grievances, though, are 1) the slit on the dress of India Hicks, which was way too high, IMHO, and 2) the hat with exagerrated bow/decoration worn by the Countess of Wessex - at certain angles it rather resembles the headpiece with wings of the Greek god Hermes.
ReplyDeleteMarina, I agree with you totally, well said re: India Hicks. I came across a photo of India Hicks, and I was shocked at the split on her dress, it was very high up. It was bad judgement and IMHO in very poor taste.
DeleteDid anyone else notice the bandage on Princess Beatrix's left ankle? I saw it when she came out of the church. rene
ReplyDeleteThe Queen has aged quite a bit, I feel, since Prince Phillip's death. How sad it all is.
ReplyDeleteThe Queen, Princess Anne, Catherine, Sophie, Louise, and Zara all looked classic and dressed well for a public Memorial Service. Fergie's daughters were ok, but Eugenie's shoes and coat were off. Bea's dress was a bad patterned frock. The woman with the light blue summery hat was way off in dressing appropriately, and she should have done better. She is used to knowing the way to dress, as she is part of the extended royal family.
ReplyDeleteThe children were well behaved, dressed well, though Peter's daughters found a great deal to laugh about, but then they are children.
Neither of the x-wives were there, they were not deemed important for the Memorial Service, to which was to allow Philip's charities, and other organizations which he was fond of, or the royal liaison, or championed during his long life. Or, they chose not to go and kept their invitation quiet. Who knows.
The issues of who or who did not attend are of no consequence. Those who made a fuss, made it all about 'them', not the man who did so much for so many people. Sadly, the grandson who could not face the family his has turned his back on, for one reason or another, but hopefully said his own goodbyes during the funeral when he did come face to face with the family.
The royals from around Europe who the Duke was close to, too were dressed well.
The role of Andrew being the Queens personal hand-maiden, making sure she didn't trip or fall was her decision whether she was pushed to make the choice, it doesnt matter now. We don't know why she chose him, but he is her son, like it or not. When people are 95, they tend to see the family, as family, not what they have done right, or wrong. Life for them is too short to fuss about who helps her make her way without falling, to the Memorial Service for her husband. Andrew for his part, seems arrogant, and that his wrong doings were false accusation, though the check his Mum wrote, and others helped him get the $$ together, seems to have just fed his ego. An innocent man would not have had his family pay millions to the young woman. He refused to talk to the FBI, or be deposed, rather worked out the amount of money the woman was given, who then donated it to different charities, to help young women who were used, abused, and thrown away like a piece of trash. Sadly, if the Queen was younger and stronger, she would not have allowed Andrew to manipulate her in such a public way.
For me, Andrew's scowlish face, and look of arrogance spoke volume's. The rest of the family, remained reserved, respectful and stood together in the face of an emotional Memorial Service. BTW, Bea was not crying for her grandfather, but when she looked at her father walking the Queen to her seat. Does this mean she feels he was innocent, ahh, I don't think so, she was the one who was drug into his story by saying he was with Bea having pizza. She knows the truth more than anyone else.
We all have our opinions, this was mine. I am just glad I was not born as a royal or pushed onto the world stage because of my family, I would not trade their lives for mine.
Rest in peace Philip. God bless the Queen, her life-long dedication to her country and her personal decisions, good or not so good, she always tried to do her best.
Anne
The photo of Bea, just above the lady with the icky looking blue hat, shows a young woman who is in desperate need of a bra. One is high, the other sagging, it looks totally unbecoming, and tasteless. #19. Erma
