Empress Masako could not attend the event because she was ill, but she plans to attend Poetry Reading on January 18. Princess Aiko could not attend because of university exams. Crown Princess Kiko currently cannot attend imperial events because she is still mourning for her late father.

  1. Quand même un peu de couleur lumineuse de la part de Kako et de la princesse assise à gauche de l'empereur ; dommage de ne pas voir Masako et Aiko indisponibles toutes les deux !

    1. Well, well, some colour in the robes.
Have they been reading our blog?

Finally other colours than usual. A red and a deep pink dress. From what I can see of it, I prefer the red one worn by princess Kako I think. She even wears a headbank instead of a hat. They start copying very slowly the European queens and princesses.

Before the official event, the maids will be informed about the colors and designs of the dresses worn by the princesses, from high to low.
There is an unwritten rule that lower females should not be more gorgeous than upper females. However, I think this is not limited to Japan ...
Princess Kako is the highest female in this photo because Empress Masako did not attend this event .
The next-ranked Princess Nobuko would have known that Princess Kako would wear a gorgeous colored dress. She was able to wear a pink dress.
Her daughters(Princess Akiko and Princess Yoko)are next to her. The mother and her daughters are no longer in a good relationship and live separately. Her daughters, unlike their mothers, wear cool color dresses. With good communication between them, her daughters may have chosen pale pink, lemon yellow, and so on.
I think Princess Kako is a kind woman. In her private photos, she is very fashionable, unlike her official duties. Princess Kako wore a red dress, giving other princesses the opportunity to wear dresses in more beautiful colors than usual.
Empress Masako often wears white dresses and clothes with similar designs and hats of the same shape. Or a dark color dress...
It is necessary for the other princesses to prefer clothes and the dress of the color of the tone that they held down to empress Masako

I think the colors are beautiful for the ladies gowns. My hope is that Empress Masako heals quickly from her illness. jj

  9. New Year's Lectures and Poetry Reading (today!) are a little different where dress code is concerned. New Year's Reception is a white tie event (black tailcoat), with chain of office (or order chain), sashes and tiaras for the ladies (not this year, jewel wearing was toned down because of Covid). The readings require court dress or morning dress, meaning cutaway for men and long (yes, colours are allowed) dresses with hats for the ladies.
