On June 15, King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain welcomed South Korea's President Moon Jae-in and his wife Kim Jung-sook with a state ceremony held at Madrid Royal Palace. The president of South Korea, Moon Jae-in, arrived in Spain on Tuesday for a three-day state visit. In the evening, King Felipe and Queen Letizia will hold a gala dinner at Madrid Royal Palace in honour of President Moon Jae-in and his wife Kim Jung-sook.
I think Letizia's outfit is too informal as senior hosts for welcoming Guests of Honour who are starting a state visit. Frothy skirt, bare arms, loose hair blowing in the wind... She has looked more formal on lesser occasions. Just my opinion.
ReplyDeleteOn another note, I'm happy to see that State visits are making a comeback. I hope that the State visit of the Imperial family of Japan to Britain that was planned then cancelled in the Spring of 2020 due to COVID return to the agenda sometime soon.

I agree 100% with everything.
DeleteTotally agree with both of you . Well said.
DeleteChantilly informal? The knowledge of some people is really ridiculous.
DeleteLouise.
Another gorgeous dress ! Queen Letizia looks so elegant as does the South Korean First Lady .
ReplyDeleteBravo !
Totally agree with you!
DeleteJudy
Both ladies look elegant!
ReplyDeleteI like her outfit but not her shoes.
ReplyDeleteI think that Letzias Outfit needs a jacket to look more formal.
ReplyDeleteI like the colour of the outfit of the wife of the President. I do not like her shoes. There is something wrong with them. Too big??
CC
It is 35 C in Madrid, mo one wears a jacket at that temperature in Spain.
DeleteMW
I agree about Kim Jung-sook's shoes. The toes point up, like elf shoes. It looks like what would happen if the heels had been shortened. I can't figure out why they have been made that way. ~d
DeleteMW: King Felipe is wearing a jacket, as are President Moon Jae-in and his wife Kim Jung-sook, as well as several of the people in the background of the photos, both men and women. S.M.
DeleteSM, King Felipe is a man, and women in the background with are from Korea, people following the President, not from Spain

Agree with anon.9.13: bare arms are a no for me for this occasion, as well as the open shoes.
ReplyDeleteJosh
At 35 C degrees? I would like to see you at that temperature.
DeleteMW.
@MW: The temperature even if it was 40C is not the point.
DeleteIf the guest can wear a respectful weather appropriate jacket, so can the host. Manners and decorum are what it's about at that level, but it's obvious you (and at least one other person on this occasion) have neither.
- Anon 9:13
Agreed; needs to wear either sleeves or a jacket. Everybody else in the picture is wearing a jacket, suit or a heavy uniform. Letizia's barbie shoes are in line with her outfit which was not right for the occasion. - Ellie
DeleteAnon 9:23. and Elli...decorum in Spain has nohing to do with arms, even ladies at 80 wear bare arms, what you are saying sounds as very ridiculous in Spain, even at weddings or mass you can wear sleevelees dresses. That must be in your countries.
DeleteMW
The bare arms are not unseemly and much less in Spain.
DeleteVictoria Eugenia wore her tiaras and all her jewels, already old, with sleeveless dresses.
I have seen official photos of Elizabeth II in sleeveless dresses and they were not young people.
I think they should change the mindset about bare arms. I never see that they say it when people with more weight, of royalty, have their arms uncovered

I think both ladies look great in their pastel colors, very elegant. The gentleman are quite handsome in their suits as well (coordinating).
ReplyDeleteChel
I love the colours in both ladies’ outfits. Q. Letitia’s dress is possibly a little too informal for the occasion, but she does look extremely good in a sleeveless garment. This would be a beautiful dress for a garden reception. (V.M.)
ReplyDeleteI believe Letizia's outfit is by Felipe Varela. It is quite stunning. The details are amazing and the fit is, as usual, impeccable. I don't mind her being sleeveless. It is summer. It is too bad about the wind. I don't know if it was surprise wind gust or if the wind was predicted. It ended up being an unfortunate time to have her hair down. I don't like the idea of throwing a blazer over dresses or outfits just to make them look more formal. Oftentimes they look like an afterthought when it is not designed to have a jacket in the first place. Kim Jung-sook's dress has a slight high-low hem, which made her outfit a little less conservative. ~d
ReplyDeleteAgree. I see nothing wrong with her being sleeveless especially considering the average temp in Spain in June. I don't think a jacket would look good with this dress. It would ruin the lines of the dress.

I think Letizia looks amazing, very elegant dress. What do you expect it is very hot over there at this present time.
ReplyDeleteMaybe the hair could have been back in one of her whimsical buns, she does so well.
@~d, completely agree with you, this is one of my favorite Varelas ( and I am not a huge fan) the skirt is absolutely not casual, but rather delicate and the whole outfit could very well be worn at a cocktail affaire. I think that there is much to be said, not only about the high temperatures, but also the cultural differences, sleeveless dresses are very common in Spain, and women don’t seem to have issues about showing their arms.
ReplyDeleteI find her outfit delicious, and yes that wind gust was inconvenient, but then again it happens, and not for nothing Queen Letizia’s hair is always on point.
Cherry.
Exactly. Arms is something that Spanish women show quite normally. It amazes me that someone is "freaked out" or says it is "not very formal". Different cultures or mindsets.
DeleteSusana
In any monarchy it is the queen who chooses the dress code within the country's own protocol. It is not the dress code of another country which is to be followed. No British dress code for the queen of Spain!
ReplyDeleteEg. hats are not used in Spain as often as in Britain (if I remember it correctly).
And the dress code is usually more "free" when the official guests are from a republic than when they are royals from a monarchy.
Margot
Excellent point. When in Rome...~d
