The Duchess of Cambridge joined people paying tribute to Sarah Everard and laid flowers at her memorial site on Clapham Common. The visit was not announced before and no official photos were taken. Sarah Everard was a marketing executive and went missing while walking home across Clapham Common earlier this month and was later found dead in a woodland in Kent.
According to the statement made by Kensington Palace, the Duchess wanted to pay her respects to the family and to Sarah. "She remembers what it felt like to walk around London at night before she got married."

I offer condolences to the family of Ms. Everard.
ReplyDeleteExcept, maybe, for the photographer, it seems Catherine's presence was unnoticed by the crowd. Have the mask restrictions been relaxed in Britain? If not, it seems a bit reckless of her to appear unmasked. I see no one else bare faced.
Perhaps she's had the vaccine shots?
DeleteThere were plenty of people without masks, including a young woman in the very first photo- they don't have to be worn outdoors in the UK. So, nothing reckless.
DeleteIn the first picture, you can see another woman with no mask. It's not a legal requirement in parks, so it's fine.
DeleteGood job, Lady Di would have done this as well and also her sister in law, probably.
DeleteI'm sorry about Mrs. Everad's family. I wish them a lot of strength. I also wish Kate a lot of strength. Thanks to the events of the last days, I admire her more and more,

What a very good gesture that she was there!
ReplyDeleteLily Bart, Anon 15:32, and Courtney-Anne, thank you. I was not aware that masks were not required in the UK when outdoor.
ReplyDeleteIt was a very nice gesture on Kate's part to visit the memorial.
Let's be honest: I immediately asked myself why she wasn't wearing a mask. Of course, outside the risk of infection is almost zero, but only if you keep a certain distance; here I personally think there are too many people in one place. So I think she wanted to make sure that she would clearly be seen. Possibly for earning plus points for the Royal Family. My opinion....because anything else would be a bad example for me, Frieda
ReplyDeleteWhy does it need to be for cynical motives? She attended with one security officer, unannounced, absolutely no fanfare. A member of the public recognised her and took her photo. Maybe she was just touched by the situation like many other thousands of people.
DeleteAgree with Anon 14/3/21 21:23
DeleteI love Kate for doing this. Royals are people, just like you and me, and it is nice to get a glimpse of that instead of the usual preplanned appearances. She blends into the crowd to pay her respects with everyone else, seemingly unnoticed for the most part. I would love to think she has made little outings like this before and we aren't even aware of it, and wish we would see more impromptu, dressed down moments like this going forward. It would make the BRF so much more relatable. As a woman, we all think how easily something like that could have been us, and it really hits home. Now that her visit has been made public, Sarah Everard's family must be very touched. ~d
ReplyDeleteFirstly, sincere condolences to the family of Sarah Everard. I try not to get into personal discussions but I am afraid, Frieda, your comment seems ungracious and unkind. The situation with masks has already been explained and it would appear that Catherine was very careful not to draw attention to herself. It's not about her. Apart from a protection officer, she appears to be alone at this event and unnoticed by the majority of the people who were paying their respects--there are a couple of clips on social media when people have a obviously recognised her. Given the over excitement about the Royal family this past week, I would suggest that it was a courageous thing to do as well. As d says, I'm sure that Sarah's family appreciated it and that's what matters.
ReplyDeleteDuchess Catherine expresses what all women think; we should be able to go out at night,. Sad that another person suffered at the hands of a bad person. I had heard a female politician read out 181 names of women killed last year; so terrible. My condolences go out to all those families.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous14/3/21 18:55 - I thought exactly the same when I first saw this images. She has been seen wearing a mask even outdoors when distance is not possible. I like her anyway, if for nothing else at least for her discretion all the times, but really felt it might have been a bit of promotion after last weeks royal events. If she wanted to pass without being noticed she would just have to wear a mask and no one would notice her!
ReplyDeleteMy thought exactly, Helena. Just a simple, harmless thought and NOT an ulterior motive, if that is what has been implied. (Anonymous14/3/21 21:23) And btw I like Kate too and most things she does. Have a good evening, Frieda

This family isn’t known for these kind of appearances, I don’t know why Kate showed up at this memorial, I want to think that is just a simple gesture of empathy, that being said, she definitely wanted to be recognized, nothing easier these days but to wear a mask, and nobody would know who you are.
ReplyDeleteThis doesn’t take away from her good intentions, but it’s definitely a move approved by the palace because is also good PR.

How terrible it is that everything a member of the RF does is so severely judged.
ReplyDeleteWhy cannot it be a deep felt need for Catherine, who had a normal life as a young woman, to join and pay her respects?
It seems to me from the few pictures shown here that the women around her have taken it this way, as nobody pays attention to her but stays focused on the commemoration.
Anonymous @21.09, there is nothing wrong to comment about her show of support, all comments are respectful and intelligent. This is a fashion blog but sometimes we talk about other issues. It seems to me that any critique no matter how thoughtful is met with a wall of defenders... nobody is attacking her.

Gracious, and has empathy.
