On Thursday, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako of Japan made video calls to people from Iwate, which is one of the three northeastern prefectures hit hard by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The Emperor and Empress made the video calls from the Akasaka Imperial Residence in Tokyo.
First, the Emperor and Empress spoke with people hit by the disaster in the city of Rikuzentakata. One of them, a 57-year-old woman, lost her 25-year-old son in the tsunami. She later published a picture book to pass down memories and lessons of the disaster to younger generations. Afterwards, the Emperor and Empress spoke with people in the city of Kamaishi.
