Queen Sonja of Norway Celebrates Her 83rd Birthday Today

Today, Queen Sonja of Norway celebrates her 83rd birthday. The daughter of clothing merchant Karl August Haraldsen and Dagny Ulrichsen, Sonja was born at the Red Cross Clinic in Oslo on 4 July 1937. She met Crown Prince Harald at a dinner party in June 1959, and invited to his graduation ball two months later. Sonja became engaged to Crown Prince Harald on 19 March 1968.

The wedding was held in Oslo Cathedral on 29 August 1968, and Miss Sonja Haraldsen became the Crown Princess of Norway. When King Harald ascended to the Throne upon the death of King Olav, Queen Sonja became Norway's first queen in 53 years. King Harald and Queen Sonja have two children, Princess Märtha Louise, born on 22 September 1971, and Crown Prince Haakon, born on 20 July 1973. Happy birthday to you, Queen Sonja.
