On June 17, 2020, Dutch Princess Margriet opened the food forest located in the new area of Apenheul Park in Apeldoorn. Princess Margriet is patron of the Apenheul Foundation. The opening was to take place on April 2, 2020, but was postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak. The food forest is a new area in the park with several stray dwarf monkey species and a more than 100 meter long insect wall.
The food forest is a new area in the park and has more than 100 meter long insect wall. This wall, together with wild flowers and fruit trees, is the primary food supply for the monkeys. Apenheul Park actively takes part in nature conservation worldwide through the Apenheul Primate Conservation Trust (APCT), which is committed to protecting the habitats of various monkey species.
At Apenheul Zoo, there are more than 400 species of apes, monkeys and other animals in the park, ranging from small pygmy monkeys to the larger gorillas and chimpanzees. The park is also home to macaws, purus, anteaters, gundis, tortoises and many other creatures.
