On February 2, 2020, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended the EE British Academy Film Awards ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The Duke of Cambridge, President of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), and The Duchess met with BAFTA representatives and watched the ceremony. During the ceremony, The Duke of Cambridge handed out the Fellowship award. (The Duchess of Cambridge wore a custom gown by Alexander McQueen.) |
BAFTA is a world-leading independent arts charity which brings films, games and television works to public attention and supports creative talents in the UK and in the world. The Fellowship award is awarded annually at the ceremony, and is the highest award given by the Academy to an individual due to an outstanding and exceptional contribution to films, games or television works. |
This year, film producer Kathleen Kennedy received the Fellowship award. In addition to its Awards ceremonies, BAFTA has a year-round learning and new talent programme, including a campaign which supports young people from all backgrounds who have entered the film, games and television industries. |
The Duke helped relaunch of that campaign in 2013. BAFTA also organizes a scholarships programme called ‘The Prince William Scholarships in Film, Games and Television’. |
I like her jewelry and accessories and the print of her gown, however, they were unable to save her from looking matronly. I wasn't a fan of the dress when she wore it years ago and I'm still not a fan. I don't this particular updo helped. It aged her even more.
ReplyDeleteAnna , I think that it's the length of the sleeves that creates the matronly look; they are visually anchored on the line of the golden border under her breasts, if you visualize it being short and in line with the corner of her décolleté, the look would have been dramatically different, young and chic. IMO
DeleteI agree. The fit is not right. And the hairdo really is matronly. -Siri
DeleteI was thinking of shorter sleeves for that dress and more simple. The dress has already plenty of sophistication.
DeleteMatronly? If this is looking matronly I would be glad to be called a matron, too. Love the dress and the jewelry. The hairstyle is awesomely pretty. Agnes Nutter
DeleteIt's the updo. She must look at youtube and the tutorials of a young Russian hairdresser. She creates the nicest updos, young and vivid.
DeleteKate looks like her own granny. Frieda
Magnifique dans cette robe dont le corsage montre un joli décolleté.. Il ne faudrait pas qu'elle perde plus de rondeurs ; très jolie coiffure.. Pochette et chaussures dans une même couleur dorée !
ReplyDeleteJust stunning. Also her hairstylist outdone himself. Great from head to toe.
ReplyDeletePerfect choice with beautiful jewels! I love the updo with this dress, and the photo showing the back of the dress and her hair is my favorite. Gorgeous couple. Ann S
ReplyDeleteTotally agree...gorgeous...
DeleteWow, Catherine looks so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteDidn't like this dress the first time and dislike it more the second time around. Looks like a costume. DMP
ReplyDeleteWhat a stunning dress, reminds me of Regency dresses with a bit of an Indian touch. Very beautiful on her. Kate is such an asset to the royal family.
ReplyDeleteDie Duchess wieder einmal eine Augenweide, so bezaubernd und pflichtbewusst in Ihren Aufgaben - ein Goldgriff für William und der Monarchie
ReplyDeleteCatherine looks very glamorous. Although the gown does not have the wow factor as some of the celebrities who walked the red carpet, I think it is classy. Her hairstyle is sophisticated. Her earrings and necklace are beautiful and are similar to the gold embellishments to her gown. Her shoes and clutch are spectacular. William looks very nice, as usual.
ReplyDeleteI actually like this dress this time better than the first time she wore it. She has had a lining put in the sleeves so they are not sheer like the first time she wore this dress. She looks stunning in it and her hair is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThe fabric reminds me of S.Asian sari material. I like the tailoring of the dresses, particularly the way it falls and flows from the waist. Not so keen on the bodice but Catherine wears it well.
ReplyDeleteI did initially think that the overall style is a bit dated, and when someone above mentioned that this is an older dress that she has worn before, that would explain it. Still, she looks lovely and her hair is very artfully arranged.
I really like her necklace.

She looks radiant and perhaps the " Alhambra" jewelry was a gift from her in-laws ? They seem to be fans of that design. Simply beautiful.
ReplyDeleteCatherine could wear a paper bag and be absolutely Stunning! So beautiful, a future Queen Indeed!
ReplyDeleteThe beading on the dress is beautiful but I find the design as a whole matronly. Same thing with her updo. It looks beautiful (there isn’t a hair out of place) but it looks dated and fussy.

She looks spectacular! Her dress, her hair and her Van Cleef & Arpels Alhambra jewelry is stunning!
ReplyDeleteNot a fan of this gown, didn't like it the first time the Duchess wore it, though I do prefer the change in the sleeves. I don't like frames around the bust area on any gown. Too much gold, not just on the dress, but clutch, shoes and matchy jewellery. Regardless she looks beautiful. Her hair is superb, feminine and elegant.
ReplyDeleteIt’s certainly an excellent fit, and the fabric is lovely, but I’m not sure it’s the best colour on her. It seems to wash her out a bit. I do love the hair and jewels though. (V.M.)
ReplyDeleteshe first wore this gown in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, while on a tour of the Asia Pacific region back in 2012. it was suitable in Asia, not so much at BAFTAs
ReplyDeleteW
Agree with you. The dress is out of place here.
DeleteThe updo and jewels elevated this from the last time. I didn’t prefer the bust/goldline area the first time but that was my quibble with the dress not how she looks in it. I get that it is a modern take on a traditional look. That said the fabric and outfit together look wonderful and fit with the theme of reusing fashion tonight. 7 years and three kids later I have to say she looks just as lovely in it!!! Good for her and I say this after having 4 of my own.

Interesting differing opinions on the dress, but IMHO the dress and the hairstyle combined looks old-fashioned and matronly. Sadly, the Duchess looks older than her age and she needs to wear more youthful looking fashions, i.e. that pink and sparkling chiffon gown with the fluttery cape sleeves (worn in about 2011) would have been a far better re-cycled choice, as per BAFTA requirements.
ReplyDeleteIt looks that she complied with the request from the organizers to wear a recycled or sustainable outfit. It took me a while to like this dress the first time, it seemed a little like a customer from Frozen, a little medieval, but then I started to see the exoticism in the fabric, and I absolutely love the bodice, Catherine can wear a décolletage like no other, everything where it should be, low, but never vulgar. The hair is superb, and makeup and jewelry on point.
ReplyDeleteSpotless, but a bit on the non-risk side. Is it the sleeves that should have been a bit longer?

Regardless of the way someone dresses, it is not an invitation for rape.
DeleteIn that regard, would you say the DoC was inviting sexual harassment when gusts of wind did blow up her dresses to show her bottom when she was on tour in Canada with the yellow dress, Australia with the wrap dress, India in the white dress, or walking through the church graveyard in a polka dot dress?
Please be fair. Also, it's 2020. The conversation about sexual harassment toward women in entertainment and many other sectors and settings has long, long, been overdue. Can't believe this has to even be said.
Dear Anna, I agree, even sexy clothes is not an an invitation for rape. I insist, however, that showing parts of the breasts, the high thighs are tasteless, provocative by the women. (As a woman, I also like to dress tastefully and a little sexy).
DeleteWOW!!!!
ReplyDeleteI don't grasp recurring arguments relating to age. She does not look a day older than she is and she does not try to look younger than she is. I don't really like this dress, maybe because of the sleeves, but IMHO that has nothing to do with age, this sleeve length is somehow awkward for a long evening dress. Beautiful jewelry! and jewelry + hair up is always excellent. (Ann.)
ReplyDeleteMy favourite bit of the whole look is the gorgeous updo which is simply amazing. Shoes bag and jewellery are superb. Like many others, I agree that this is not the best gown she has in her wardrobe but it is a re-wear and it is suitably glitzy. Also, as Cherry Blossom and Glo point out, it fits her perfectly and is showy without being in the slightest bit vulgar. I also agree with V.M. that paler colours leave her looking less radiant and a little washed out (compare it with the glorious red dress from last week or any of the navy/black evening dresses she has worn) I definitely think the descriptions of "matronly" are wide of the mark---glitzy, elegant but not as fabulous as she sometimes looks.
ReplyDeleteCatherine looks stunning. I was surprised at this gown choice for some reason. Coupled with the fact she was the only one to rewear a gown, she slays. I did notice she made the sleeves opaque instead of the sheer they had been. I do not see how this dress is matronly. This dress has beautiful details. Her accessories are great. And that HAIR!

Lovely dress for a state diner. Very princess-like. For this event something more bold would have been approriate, black lace for instance?

For whom do you write this comment??
DeleteI’m not British either but at least I try and I think : so should you!
@ Anonym. 2:03 AM It is easy to translate to English or any other language. Don't see any problem if you want to do it.

Well, if it is that easy: why doesn’t anon 10.53 do that?
DeleteBeing found of languages myself, I hesitate to comment, however I think the author of a comment, in a very unsual language here, should have it translated by himself, rather than expecting readers to do it.
DeleteI just had my eyes attracted by William's shoes, euh euh I don't think they are appropriate.
DeleteThe dress is nice but for Malaysia not for BAFTA. Besides that I think Catherine's face looks much better with her beautiful hair down.
ReplyDeleteAVA
Kate went for the expensive choice on Bafta. A bespoken costume made dress twice(she have changed the sleeves since last time), necklace $8950, earrings $6200, shoes $595, purse $595. Not my cup of tea, but anyway ;)
ReplyDeleteI don´t like the dress at all. It looks like a german "Dirndl".
ReplyDeleteFabrics nice, but I do not like the pride and prejudice style of the dress; this high waist under the bosom. Makes Kate even look thinner than she is.
ReplyDeleteFascinating. This is not a repeat I ever expected to see. I'm astonished by how much the lining on the sleeves changes the impact of the overall silhouette. The elements look more intentional, more cohesive. Photos will never do justice to this type of fabric.
