Well I don't understand Victoria's dress, where does it start, how many layers.. Possibly not bad. Sofia's dress is not bad, but her tatoo kills it... Maybe it is Madeleine's dress I pefer.

ReplyDeleteI love Silvia´s gown, I think it´s exquisite, but I don´t think it´s ideal for a white tie event to be worn with sash and tiara. For a black tie event, like on the previous occasion, it was perfect.
ReplyDeleteThe princesses, however, disappoint me here. I´m sorry to say but I like none of what I see. Madeleine´s is the best of the three with clean lines and an unfussy look. I also like that she went for an actual colour and not just another pastel gown; I just wish it hadn´t been pink. Being so simple, and pink, it looks like a prom dress. And I don´t get the buttons in the back giving away the see-through upper bodice. Also, her hair style could have been a bit more elaborate. This looks like she´s put it up herself.
Next, Sofia. Great colour, no doubt. Also, great skirt, fits her well. But the bodice, and those sleeves. Horrible. The matching stones on the tiara are good in theory but end up looking plastic-y. And lastly, I´m tired of the loose hair hanging around her face. Not a fan of a messy updos to start with, and not when executed like that, and certainly not for a tiara event.
And then Victoria. I don´t know. There are things about this gown that I like (the black-and-white, the neckline looking classy despite being low, the silhouette and drama of this gown which feels right for this occasion); and then there are things that are just shockingly wrong: a padded fabric? quilted? really? And what´s that thing on her right hip? Looks like a burnt piece of popcorn - on steroids. I also struggle to like the embroided little bits sprinkled over the black parts of the skirt, seeing those I wiped my screen thinking I had some dirt or dust on it. I don´t know. I think she went for a dramatic interpretation of the traditional Swedish court gown but it didn´t quite work. I can, with a bit of fantasy, see a slight similarity with baroque gowns that just were so decadent and big and unmistakingly regal, like royalty wrapped in layers of velvet, brocade and fur. It´s a dramatic look but it doesn´t convince me. And while I think that Victoria looks good here (tidy hair, nice jewellery, great poise), I think that she looks tired and not radiant enough to match the visual impact of her gown.

I wonder if the news that emerged yesterday afternoon about the passing of Marie Fredriksson did not shake her up a bit; she sung at their wedding. Having said this, I still thing that this dress is a miss, with a different kind of fabric it might have worked.

ReplyDeleteI know I am alone in thinking that the Swedish royal s look for any occasion to stick a crown on their heads. British royals rarely wear crowns, including the queen. It just seems so silly and arrogant....but I love the gowns!

DeleteFirst: the royal ladies do not wear crowns, crowns are in a museum. (When Gustav V ascended the throne early in the 20th century he considered coronations to be old fashioned and coronations were abolished.) The queen and princesses wear tiaras (also called diadems).
DeleteSecond: the Nobel ceremony followed by the gala dinner is the most important event in the annual calendar of Sweden. So it is totally natural to wear tiaras and other jewellery. Other events when tiaras are worn are state visits (not all of them) and dinner for foreign ambassadors (1/year).
Obviously you don't know the Swedish tiaras otherwise you'd know that today Silvia is wearing "only" the 3rd important tiara, not the biggest one (that was for the crown princess's wedding). People expect to see the tiaras.
And also different from Britain is that opening of the Parliament in Sweden is an affair in business suit/day dress and not an evening gown with crown and gala uniform. Different countries, different traditions. It is not a question of arrogance of certain royals.

DeleteThere are strict rules for when the royals (and theire guests) have to wear what. The "rulebook" is called protocoll. It's about more or less formal occassions. So it's not a decision by the royal ladys, it's not about when they are willing to wear a tiara. They have to fullfill theire duties, even by wearing a tiara for specific events. Sometimes they have to wear a tiara, sometimes they're not allowed to wear a tiara.

DeleteThe swedish Crown Princess and her siblings are younger than The Prince of Wales and his siblings. In Sweden those young royals have to fullfill those heavy formal roles since they're 18th birthdays. Whereas in GB the active royal family is much bigger. The Generation of William and Harry is still growing into it's future role. Could this be a possible reason why tou think the young swedish Princesses stick more often a tiara on they're heads, than the young british princesses?
It's because the young swefish princesses have more pressure since they're born as children of a king, not grandchildren.

I hope more photos are posted which give us a better looks at the gowns of Victoria, Sofia and Madeleine. Queen Silva looks beautiful, as always. Her gown is very pretty, and her tiara, earrings and necklace are gorgeous. From what the photos posted, I'm thinking that Victoria's gown is swallowing her...too much of a good thing can be bad. Madeleine's gown is a pretty color and has an interesting back with the rose-colored buttons. Her earrings, the epaulette earrings featured earlier this week on the Crown Jeweller blog, are glamorous, to say the least. Sofia's gown may be my favorite. The turquoise/teal looks beautiful on her and matches her tiara nicely.

DeleteI don´t really mind that much skin exposed but I also noticed that all three princesses happened to have bare shoulders. It´s not wrong, it just a contrast to previous years. It´s Madeleine´s very low back which I find bordering on iffy, but I think it is still ok. Wouldn´t have wanted it any lower though.

If there´s one gown that looks like it´s going to slide down anytime, it´s Sofia´s. I don´t even know what´s holding it up. Victoria´s bodice on the other hand looks well constructed and firm.

DeleteVictoria's very pouffy and heavy-looking gown is too bottom-heavy and looks like it is falling off of her chest. Sofia's gown is oddly proportioned with very bare shoulders and huge long sleeves; but the color is glorious on her even though the tattoo is tacky. Madeleine's gown is the only "normal" one and is my favorite (I love the color & plain style), her earrings (also a favorite of Victoria's) and tiara are beautiful, a beautiful combination on a beautiful princess.
Vanessa: My guess is that Sofia's dress has some kind of built-in corset/boning thing that we can't see, which prevents it from sliding down.

You either love or hate turquoise stones I guess, but it does give her a blue option to wear with her gowns. A bit of color is nice. Madeline is divine in pink. Siliva looks lovely. It is a matter of taste and style. But not indicative of being "low class." I don't have any. But I would hope if I did, someone wouldn't judge me because of it. Janell

I am surprised that so many people have problems with tattoos. I work with Data Scientists, Software Engineers and Developers - highly skilled people. The majority of them has tattoos. And so have our customers, and I talk about the Business-to-Business-market, not Business-to-Consumer. Like Janell says, her doctor and her lawyer also have tattoos. It has nowadays nothing to do with being "tacky" or "low class".

Superbes toutes ces dames.. Magnifique robe-couture de la reine... J'adore le diadème de Sofia avec les turquoises accordées aux boucles d'oreilles ; elle peut les inter-changer selon la couleur de la toilette.. La robe de Victoria semble encombrante mais elle la porte à merveille.. Superbe celle de Madeleine qui montre délicatement son dos avec des petites perles roses !!!

DeleteI love Queen Silvia’s gown but the rest are a fail for me. Poor CP Victoria is drowning in the vast folds of her gown. P. Sofia’s small frame is overwhelmed by those sleeves, and there is too much matchy-matchy turquoise in this ensemble. P. Madelaine’s gown fits her well enough but why pair the aquamarine tiara with it? It’s a very disjointed ensemble especially with the epaulette earrings. (V.M.)

ReplyDeleteSophia needs to get rid of the tattoo. It ruins the gown completely. Whatever is left un-ruined, is destroyed by her hairdo. And the puffed up so-called sleeves may be trendy, but are completely out of place for an evening gown. The stones added to her tiara might improve it if worn with a black gown but the way it looks with the turquoise dress makes it feel like a cheap addition. Overall, not looking regal in my opinion.

Better than Sophia, and with the upper part of her décolletage perfect matching her skin tone it is a very clever tailoring trick to avoid wardrobe malfunctions (I truly thought it’s a strapless dress before I saw the photo of the back of her dress). It’s the colour (did it really need to be such a terrible pink?) that feels off putting. A whole class above Sophia anyway.
Victoria, oh my goodness. A black and white gown is typically a wonderful idea. That’s about all the positive I can think off. It would have been even worse if it had a fuchsia or turquoise element to it. Most unflattering cut for anyone.
The Queen is by far the best dressed and most regal looking. Not looking to stand out by choosing ridiculous cuts or colours. But to me it’s what I have come to expect from her. So much elegance.

Looked at the later post of the dinner to get abetter view of these dresses which confirmed that the Queen's was the winner for it's sheer elegance and class. Close second was Princess Madeleine's--beautiful style, though I don't like the strange additional tail over the train and the colour is fantastic on her. I like the colour of Princess Sofia's dress but the sleeves are very strange and it's a pity it left the rather tacky tattoo on full view.
ReplyDeleteNot sure where to start with Crown princess Victoria's dress--it definitely looks as if it's fallen off her left shoulder and she's not been able to haul it back into place. Why the odd sleeves anyway? And the heavy fabric in different colours. I agree with Maria that it looks as if she has been draped in a swathe of curtain material--perhaps with matching sleeves and without the additional white layer it could have been passable.
Clothes apart, it's great to see them all out together and wonderful to say the array of jewellery on display. Although the Queen's dress wins for me, her tiara is fourth with the other three being first equal!!
I think Victoria's gown is regal.
ReplyDeleteI do too — it really has that stately ball gown vibe and probably moves beautifully. Admittedly I would simplify it a bit as I feel the whole is a bit too “busy” — but I would most definitely keep the drama and gravitas.
