On September 6, 2019, Queen Mathilde of Belgium visited the Venice Biennale which is one of the most prestigious events of contemporary art in the world for over a century. She visited the Belgian pavilion and the 58th International exhibition called "May You Live in Interesting Times”. For that edition of the biennial, the Belgian pavilion is displaying MONDO CANE, an exhibition created by the artist duo Harald Thys and Jos de Gruyter, which was curated by curator Anne-Claire Schmitz. |
ReplyDeleteI agree with Hedy's comment - and also Lizzie's. That hat just seems to want to be copied from Maxima and is not really Mathilde's look. It is too big, too dark.
DeleteI agree as well about the hat... not a good choice.
DeleteThe Queen looks spot on, for this visit. Some ladies can wear wide rimed hats well others don't. Mathilde is one who can.
ReplyDeleteMathilde has gone all Maxima. Pity......
ReplyDeletePity indeed......those big hats look ridiculous. Since nobody wears such big hats in normal life, it gives the impression of playing queen by disguise dress. Put on your crown then, I would suggest....
DeleteI am in favour of the style of Letizia who always looks spot on, modern, clean lines, elegant without going
over the “queen” top.

The entire outfit looks heavy for a summer day in Venice. The four ladies Maxima, Mathilde, Mary and Letizia are only separated in age by a few months but the difference in style is striking. True, there are cultural differences and event appropriate outfits to consider, but the first two seem to adhere to fairy tale style queening, while the other two live in a more modern world. Monarchies today are in some respects superfluous, so dressing to the expectations of their citizens also plays a part. Still, one of her pretty pantsuits, shoes without plastic inserts, and no hat would would have done the trick here.

NATAN sucks!!
ReplyDeleteYes, he absolutely does.
DeleteNow this is a royal dress, fit for a wedding! It suits her, but it is a bit of a strange mixture in my humble opinion: The hat looks heavy and dark. In Venice it is still late summer, so she does not need it. And I would not choose those shoes (they give the impression of huge feet). But otherwise: she looks gourgeous just like Mathilde!
ReplyDeleteOups! Mal réveillée j’ai cru que c’était Maxima !
ReplyDeleteVery beautiful outfit. Love the hat.

Such a lovely dress! -- but that belt ruins it, imo. I like the hat, which to me does not seem outlandishly big -- so I hope we'll see this outfit on Mathilde again, just without the belt.
ReplyDeleteI love the look . The queen looks fresh .
ReplyDeleteDare I say I think she's a bit over dressed for the occasion/event? She looks great but I think the outfit would be better for a wedding or church christening.
ReplyDeleteThe artist (man in the dark grey suit) is Luc Tuymans, one of the most succesfull contemporary painters.
ReplyDeleteMaxima has a similar dress and hat too. They may be talking fashion over tea.

I like this dress to an extent but there’s something not quite right about it. There’s a lot going on with the sheer sleeves and pattern on the skirt plus the belt. I think it’s possibly a little too long and therefore looking quite frumpy in some of the photos.
ReplyDeleteExactly my thoughts. Well said, Annie.
DeleteI sighed 'Natan...' when I saw this. Natan... there is way more and better fashion than just him!
MATHILDE is beautiful in this dress, and with that hat. She is beautiful and very lovely.
ReplyDeleteEl sombrero de Matilde (su ala)es más pequeño que los de Máxima,en gusta su combinacon con los zapatos, pienso en el sol de Venecia .. y el reflejo de agua..bien elegido
