On June 18, 2019, Queen Elizabeth II, King Willem-Alexander, Queen Maxima, The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, The Duke of York, The Earl and Countess of Wessex, Princess Anne, Princess Beatrice, Princess Eugenie and Zara Tindall attended the first day of Royal Ascot 2019 held at Ascot Racecourse in Ascot. (The Duchess of Cambridge is wearing a custom Elie Saab dress.) |
From what little I can see, it's Eugenie for the win afaic. Simple, clean lines may not be the hallmark of Ascot, but they always work best for her, and make her a standout here. Some others look a bit too fussy and/or overwhelmed by skirt length. I love Catherine's outfit from the waist up, but the volume and dotted busyness of the skirt ruin it for me. Maxima looks excited, happy and extremely pretty but the hat goes a few centimeters too far into goofyland (sigh).
ReplyDeleteYes, definitely goofyland is where Maxima's hat should go. At least her dress and hair are good.
DeleteFor once, Maxima's dress is very nice. Her hats are always ridiculous, so what's one more? Although it IS Ascot!
DeleteQueen, Camilla and Anne amazing.
ReplyDeleteEveryone else - dear lord.
What with all the little house on the prairie ?
Love Anne's hat, so pretty and classy.
DeleteAnne has overall a great taste..classy indeed.
DeleteAgree, I like Queen Elisabeth, Camilla and Anne choices very best - majure style.
DeleteMaxima nails it. Both the dress and the hat, just wow. And her charisma is very special.
ReplyDeleteIndeed! These are her best dresses and hats of the year during this visit. It shows personality and class at the same time. Lovely!
DeleteTotally Agree!
DeleteMaxima nails it. Both the dress and the hat, just wow. And her charisma is very special.
ReplyDeleteYes, Maxima nails it again. The hat a bit big but so is Camilla's. The similarity of Kate's and Beatrice's dresses is odd to say the least. Lose the bow, Kate.
DeleteSad to see the print on Sophie's dress; otherwise it's a nice outfit.

For me, the winners are Kate, Sophie and Beatrice. All three look incredible. Maxima looked good but those earrings were too much and the dress was bland. The queen was well, the queen. The blue was great on Eugenie but I didn’t like the hat. Ara look comfortable, in the most stylish way possible. Her interactions with Kate was just precious. The whole family looked like a real, happy and very British family today.
ReplyDeleteIt seems blue is the color of members of the RF today. Lovely outfits. The Q is always spot on. The other members are the ones to watch.Everyone great outfits and hats.
Kate in diesem zarten Tüllkleid gefällt mir sehr.
DeleteFrieda
Hi Frieda, you are right. Kate's look makes her older than her years, although the colour looks lovely. I noticed that several times before during the last monnths. Good "silhouette", but somehow "Granny-like". A bit more fun and "Take it easy" would help. She is still a young woman in her 30ies!
DeleteMaxima has great fun, it seems.
And Beatrice and Eugenie, well, well, well. Don't ask me...
rainha leonor: I'm completely with you ;-)
DeleteFrieda
Duchess Catherine wores a similar outfit (colour, hat) as Princess Madleine of Sweden at some baptism.
DeleteGoodness me Maxima! carrying a hedge on her head 😃
ReplyDeleteToday is Duchess Kate's day, very pretty, very much the Lady of Ascot.
As for the York sisters, they didn't even try!!
Hahaha 'a hedge on her hat', you made me laugh! Typical Maxima I think ;-)
DeleteYes, it is like a hedge on the side of her head, lol!
DeleteMaxima’s hat is a touch too wonky for my liking. Kate looks glorious as do the York’s.
ReplyDeleteSophie looks glorious! Kate a near second followed by Beatrice
ReplyDeleteThe Queen and Camilla and Anne look very good. Kate's look is too frou frou, and Maxima as usual over the top, the hat is ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteHa, that is the first word that came to my mind too...hat is ridiculous. Her hair looked so nice today. Wish the hat had not detracted from it.
DeleteKate could have borrowed that dress from Mrs Marple. And the York sisters, big no, Sophie, no no no.
ReplyDeleteOr Mary Poppins :)
DeleteThe only ones we can really see well are the Queen, Kate, Maxima and Camilla.
ReplyDeleteKate looks fantastic head to toe - nice style dress, colour and summer frothiness. Her hat is very predictable.
Maxima look fantastic as well - beautiful dress, colour, style and great hair. The hat is WAY in excess... however it is perfectly in keeping with the Ascot tradition of 'OTT' headgear, and if anyone can carry an OTT hat with style, and charisma it's Max. Well done! (PS So happy that they are the foreign Royal guests this year).
The Queen is ...the Queen. Perfectly appropriate and looking great.
Won't comment on Sophie, Anne and the York sisters yet as we cannot see very much at all from the photos posted at the time of writing. I'll wait for more detailed photos to be added before saying anything. I do like Sophie's hat though.
Now that more photos have been added:
Delete- Beatrice's dress is pretty, but not for a young lady like her. It makes her look older than she is.
- Sophie's dress material immediately reminded me of wallpaper we had in our house as a child. Nearly the exact same pattern and colours. The dress style is too plain for Ascot, though I like the style of her hat.
- Eugenie is the winner of these three for me. Simple, summery, age appropriate and quietly chic, and the right hat.
- Anne's outfit looks too Wintery for me.
I love all the beautiful and uncommon shades of blue on display on this Day 1 of Royal Ascot.
Photos like in a fairytale! Wonderful! Especially Catherine and Sophie look so beautiful. Believe it or not, I have a dress that is similar to Sophie's. (Hinweis an die anderen Deutschsprachigen: mein Kleid ist von C&A, ernsthaft.)
ReplyDeleteBlue is certainly the color of the day. I do like the simple lines of Eugenie's dress. Her hat matches a small yellow inset in the skirt. Beatrice's dress looks very stiff. She brings in some color with tassels on her hat. I like Zara's outfit with the exception of the length of her dress. I am not sure if this was supposed to be maxi length or if it is too long midi. Maxima must be in heaven! Her hat is perfect for Ascot. While the dress is not the most attractive, it does not compete with her hat. I think her gloves look too heavy for her outfit, but it is a very small thing. She looks very happy to be there, as they all do! I am on the fence about Kate's dress. It is very feminine and the color is lovely. It is also very fussy and I do like a more simple look. I also think it is too long. I can't comment on Sophie without seeing more of her dress.
ReplyDeleteAgree about Kate, the dress looks much better on the model -I like the shorter sleeves, for example.
DeleteAngieF
Yes, Anon 12:45, now that model's picture has been added, I completely agree. The sleeves, belt and straw hat give it a very different, and in my opinion, much more appealing look.
DeleteWow, how nice to see King Willem Alexander and Queen Maxima at Royal Ascot. Lovely. Fashion wise, I do not like her dress very much, the colour doesn't work for her, but her hair is nice and soft. And she decided to put a whole bouquet of flowers on her hat. I know it's Maxima and Royal Ascot fit in one sentence, but still too much for me.
ReplyDeleteQueen Elizabeth's hat looks amazing though, the flowers are beautiful in their bright colours and not too big. Her coat is nice too.
Kate is again the winner here: Lovely dress, very romantic and regal, beautiful colour, nice updo and overall well-styled. And again her make-up is not so heavy and dark here! Well done.
From what I can see now, Sophie and Anne look a bit underwhelming to me.
And about Eugenie: Years ago I read in a Royalty magazine that bare shoulders are 'taboo' at Royal Ascot, as well as deep necklines and short skirts. Does anyone know about this or has the dress code changed? Because Eugenie definitely has bare shoulders. And no, it's not judgemental or old-fashioned, I'm just curious. Thanks anyway!
I personally love what Catherine is wearing! Big win for me! I was not a fan of the white and black yesterday. She needs to move on from the collars and peplum. But this? Beautiful for Ascot!
ReplyDeleteMaxima looks fab as usual
O, oops, I forgot Camilla. Her soft pink coat with the subtle lace embroidery is very nice, I love it!
ReplyDeleteMaxima i,don t like the hat, too,special.
ReplyDeleteMaxima knows how to do Ascot! Excellent!
ReplyDeleteAgree.
DeleteEverything about Catherine's outfit works beautifully except the bow at her neck. Beatrice looks appalling and 50 years old in that ageing fussy top. Maxima, although the hat is over the top, is stunning in a quite sensual and perfectly fitted dress.
ReplyDeleteThe Queen is the winner here . Queen Maxima and King Willem Alexander are most elegant couple. Duchess Kate is absolutely fabulous . All royal ladies are lovely . Princess Eugenie can do better.
ReplyDeleteLooks like someone forgot to tell Kate that Ascot is also about having fun with your outfit (possibly going a little over the top, without veering into silly territory). Her entire look (maybe less the shoes) could be from Trooping the Colour, in fact her hat IS from Trooping ‘16, just in pale blue instead of pink). Even Her Majesty has fun today with her hat. Sophie wins the day, she shows personality and flair (without getting to compete with Maxima). Can’t say what the York sisters are wearing, more blue I guess. Zara looks good, you can tell this isn’t her third Ascot. Maybe tomorrow.... usually different royals and let’s hope more Race attire, not church.
ReplyDeleteSome of the non-royals had good taste and went to have some good time, there are some exquisite ones indeed.
Lily
I love the outfit on Q.Max - if you can’t go all out at Ascot where can you? The Queen’s hat is delightful. D.Kate looks nice in blue, but the outfit reads a bit prim to me. K.Wax’s hat is not tall enough for him and it’s sitting too far down on his head. I think it should look more like P. William’s. (V.M)
ReplyDeleteOMG, they ALL!!! look sooooooo fabulous!!
ReplyDeleteThe Queen - wonderful in this kind of blue, lovely!
Camilla - very lovely, she looks great
Kate - wow, wow, wow! this looks great! it's a bid 'old time' but not oldfashioned, it looks very lovely, great colour and I really, really love the skirt of this dress. wonderful hat also!
Maxima - fabulous, what more to say?
Anne - I'm ok with her, it's her style.
Zara - wonderful! She looks so good in this dress and also wonderful hat
Sophie - very nice :-)
Eugenie: wonderful dress, I like the colour and I like this small yellow part on the side of the dress. The dress is a little bit ill fitting at the chest, but still very nice
Beatrice: very nice dress, would love to have this dress. I'm not a fan of the hat, but I'm not too bad with it.
The guys: ohhhh how good they are looking.
I saw pics on daily mail, Zara arm in arm with Charles, Zara kissing Charles' cheek - wonderful pics.
A lot of pics all of them laughing together and chatting, very, very nice.
Did you see the pics of Mike Tindall joking to the Queen and Sophie? The Queen laughed a lot. Mike took his hat off and there was a tiny little hat inside, so FUNNY :-) :-)
ah, forgot to write:
ReplyDeletedid you also see the wonderful pic of Kate laughing, eyes closed, grinning with tongue between her teeth? wonderful pic.
I also love this pics a lot where they all laugh together, Zara with Charles,
Mike joking to the queen <3 <3 <3
Anna, yes, I saw the pic of Kate laughing and I like it too! But I also love her on the fifth picture here on Helens blog. I am sure, Anna, you read the comments about Eugenie looking pregnant. Some people even assume Kate, Eugenie, and Zara all are pregnant... what a Babyboom that would be, wouldn't it!
DeleteAren't they pregnant all the time? *g*
DeleteThey will let us know when it's the time.
I like Mike Tindall so much, he seems to be a great guy..
There is a picture in DM where it looks like Eugenie is breaking the news of pregnancy and telling Sarah Tindal.. and if you look how Princess Eugenies figure transformed and her smile is brighter and happier than ever..
DeleteDoes anyone have any information as to why King Felipe and Queen Letizia were not at Ascot? I checked Letizia's schedule and did not see any engagements for today. I would have liked to see them.
ReplyDeleteI now see that they were attending the Order of Merit ceremony in Spain yesterday.
DeleteMeant Order of Civil Merit
Delete@Anon 12:21 there was a lot of agrument on Twitter about Duchess Catherine, who missed to greet Queen Letizia friendly.
Deletef.e.
Since Letizia is a Queen and Catherine is only a duchess - yes. She should curtsy to Letizia. IMO
— Archie Aunty-Monroe@outlook.com (@kathy092557) 17. Juni 2019
Anon 12:08, you are correct, according to "royal rules" Kate should curtsy to Letizia. I was not aware of this argument on Twitter and other social media. Did Kate not curtsy to Letizia? Did she curtsy to Maxima?
DeletePerhaps there was a proper curtsy done if they first met in private...
DeleteMaxima - as gorgeous as I've ever seen her - that dress is superb!!
ReplyDeleteKate is channelling Princess Diana circa 1981 - something lovely about that, although its not my favourite dress she looks beautiful. The colour is race day perfect!
Thought Duchess of Cambridge might go lacy, frilly My Fair Lady again and although this is along those lines it's so much prettier in blue than in the white lace of the last couple of appearances.
ReplyDeleteI am not a fan of the dresses of either of the York Princesses--Eugenie's is on the tight side, although a lovely colour, and the comments made on this site so many times about ill fitting undergarments seems to apply here. Beatrice's is just too much lace, similarly Zara Tindall's floral, though I love her hat. Quit like Countess Sophie's dress but the matching patterned brim looks weird to me. Top trio for me are Her Majesty, who looked magnificent--great colour of coat, departure from her usual hat shape and just looking so happy and brilliant overall, the Duchess of Cornwall elegant and summery in her pale pink but the winner by miles Queen Maxima, whose dress was wonderful and perfect for her and whose hat was completely over the top and very fitting for Ascot. Looking forward to tomorrow
Agree very in all points and have to emphasize as well Maximas hat was my
Deletefavourite.
lecteur beaucoup
Pussy bows on dresses so out of style and the Gone with the Wind of Kate's dress is so prissy. Maxima looks lovely so elegant. The queen looks pretty safe in her outfit the hat is nice. The
ReplyDeleteYork Princesses look fine. The men look dapper.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuwRYoncvP0
ReplyDeleteWow Her Majesty Queen Maxima! Other ladies look nice as well, except one of the youngest who makes everything look mumsy that I won't even name because it's becoming exhausting.
ReplyDeleteMARIE
Is Kate starring in Mary Poppins ? In that case she need a parasol to fly.
ReplyDeleteDevinitly, lol. :-)
DeleteLady Kitty Spencer hits Royal Ascot 2019.
ReplyDeleteQueen Maxima made such a kind diplomatic statement with wearing the Stuart parure diamond earrings in one of their variants, which nobody seams to notice!? All ladies very beautiful! And yes, the royal protocol says that you curtsy only upon the first meeting. If it's in private, that's done for the day. Happy, colorful, sunny Ascot to us all !
